RELIGIOUS INTELLIGENCE. Bishop Mc'Maine in England. One of the most eminent and honored bishops of the Protestant Episcopal Church in this country is the Right Rev. Charles Petit Mcllvaine, D. D., D. 0. L.; bishop of Ohio. For some weeks past this venerable prelate has been sojourning in Eng land, where he has long had many friends and ad- Minn, for an American elergymin. He has in more than one instance preached by request before her Majesty - the Queen. When the Prince of Wales visited the United States, in the autumn of 3860, we believe he paid the Bishop's visit, at his residence in Ohio. The influence of the latter in England, we have reason to believe, hes been most salutary. - ills letters from there breathe the spirit of a Christian and a patriot—one ,who dares to espouse the right in the face of obloquy and blind prejudice. A telegram from Washington relates that soon after the death of Prince Albert, DishopMcllvaino addressed a letter of condolence to the Prince of Wales, enclosing it to Gen. Bruce, with the request that it might be delivered. The letter was received, and in a few days elicited an answer, thanking the Bishop for his attention. Not long after this, the Bishop was en route for the Isle of Wight, standing upon the deck of the steamer, alone, when a royal yacht passed, with the Prince of Wales and General Bruce aboard, who in passing waved their bats ; the recognition, as soon as the Bishop was told who the party were, was mutual. 'The quiet, but powerful, influence of such men in England jest new, when disloyal AtabflOttill are doing their utmost to fan the jealousy of our Eng bah brethren into a flame, is most fortunate, and will, doubtless, accomplish more towards shaping public sentiment abroad, regarding the eternal principles of right involved in our present contest, than a host of rebel envoys. Several known sym pathizers with Secession, in England, are said to have bad their views changed entirely through conversations had with this distinguished hierarch. SONETEING NEW IN OUR LOCAL CHURCH His- TORY.—On Monday evening next, the lith instant, the Quarter Century Anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Brainerd's pastorate of the " Old Pine-atreet Con gregation," (New School Presbyterian,) will be 'celebrated at Sanaem-street Hall. What the pro-- grtunme on the occasion will be has not been an nounced, though from the Doctor's proverbial :wer e= to even seeming irregularities of any kind in church matters, it may safely be assumed that those who participate will find nothing to effend the most orthodox taste. Whether the occasion is to include anything more material than" a feast of reason and a flow of soul," we are not informed, though it is evident that the arrangements have not boon in considerable, from the fact that there has already been a postponement of ex days on account of their incompleteness. It was first announced to be held on the llth.. The eligibility of the guests is fitly indicated as follows : "All who are now, or have been members of the congregation within the last quarter century, and desire to participate in the celebration, are requested to engage tickets of the following : John Wallace, Ninth, below South street; Samuel Work, 36 South Third street; W. J P. 'White, Fifth and Chestnut streets ; Farr do Brother, 324 Chestnut street; James W. Queen, 924 Cheetnet street; S. Tustin Eldridge, 126 South second street, and Frederick Myorlo, 345 South Se need street. Ey order of Robert J. Mercer, Chair man of Committee of Arrangements. George Young, secretary." The twenty-fifth anniversary sermon. was preached by Dr. Brainerd two weeks ago, and contained among other interesting statistics the facts, that, twenty•five years ago, the, popu lation of our city was but little over one fourth of what it is now ; that in the course of these years be has attended over seven hundred funerals ; and over one thousand members have been added to the church, and that of the different clergymen who were then in charge of the several Presbyte rian churches in this city, the only ones remaining are the Rev. John Chambers, Rev. Albert Barnes, D. D., and Rev. Henry A. Boardman, D. 3/ The ctimist number of the American _Pregbyteriast, speaking . of this contemplated. celebration, says: c 4 Such an expression of feeling in regard to the pastoral office can but add to the general esteem in which it is held, and will tend to promote the hap piness and permanence of the relation wherever it exists." We endorse this fully, and almost regret that the qualifications for participating in this grand reunion do not apply to us. THE LATE REir. J. P. B. WanatEn—We mean late of this city. Our readers are familiar with the cherished Secesh proclivities of Dr. Wilmer—late pistol . of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of this city— Which finally culminated in his pilgrimage to Dixie, and have probably heard with surprise of big treasonable baggage discovered on the way. As the statements made with regard to the latter, however, were greatly exaggerated, some of his former friends in this city are'anxions that he ghould be relieved of the °dim. We may state, Therefore, that after a little delay all the articles Dr. 'Wilmer took from the North were forwarded to him, which would certainly not have occurred bad they been of the character represented by cer tain newspaper correspondents. We make this otatement on the principle of I , giving the devil his due." THE CATHOLIC PEERAGE, BARONETAGE, AND limuancirr.—The English Directory, for 1862, states that there are 22 Catholic peers, 9 being peers of England, and 4 poors of tho United Kingdom. Thirteen Catholic peers sit in the House of Lords. There are 43 Catholic baronets, 23 being English, 3 /Scotch, and 17 Irish. Of the members of Parlia ment, 31 are Catholics. In Great Britain there are 1,383 Catholic bishops and priests, 1,019 churches, chapels, and stations, 5a communities of men, 162 converts, and 12 colleges. The increase in the three last years is, of bishops and priests, 166; of churches, chapels, and of stations, 93 ; of commu nities of men, 16; of convents, 52; colleges, 1; showing an increase of 13; per cent, on the num ber of bishops and clergy; an increase of 10 per cent. on the bombes of ehttrahea and chapels ; an Increase of 41 per cent. on the number of commu nities of men ; an increase of 47 per cent on the number of convents ; and an increase of 9 per cent. on the number of colleges. ORDINATION HT THE REY. JOHN CHA.MBERS.—A short time ago the Tier. John Chambers, of thin city, ordained -to iho ministry Mr. M. E. Harmstead, a lumber of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Camden, am.: a local preacher—an act on the part of this Independent divine which has elicited con siderable criticism. The New School Presbyterian organ in this city says respecting it: ,‘ We question very mach the propriety and Christiat4ty of this whole business_" HARD TO CONTEUT.—The Boston Post e says: " The American Society for the amelioration of the Condition of the Jews is said to be extinct. Poen piary amelioration the JeWN de het need religious amelioration they will not have. So the society died for want of business. The only mourners are likely to he the secretaries, deprived of their occu pation. The society has certainly done very little." The Hebrew Messenger, reviewing the nonclition of the Hebrews in this country. sums up what they have done during the past year, as follows : "New synagogues have been dedicated at Cin cinnati and Now York; new congregations formed at Boston and New York; literary associations have been founded at Cleveland and Hartford; a He brew free Sunday school has been opened in one of our cities ; a course of lectures under the au spices of a Ilebrew literary society has been de livered at New York, where, likewise, a grand banquet in aid . of the Jews' Hospital was given, yielding nearly ten thousand dollars to the funds of that institution." A RELIGIOUS TEACHER YOE . THE . CONTRABANDS MIT PORT ROYAL.—WO learn from the Boston Transcript that a religious 'society in that city, entitled the Christian Unity, have sent their pastor, the Rev Cborles R Rich, to Port Royal, as a teacher of the contrabands, taking with him a quantity of clothing and books contributed by the people of Boston for the use of the blacks. THE LATE REV. J. B. RumEv.—By the death of the Ryv. J. B. Ripley, which occurred in this city last week, the sailor has lost a true and valued friend. Mr. Ripley was for years PAW of We Illatireer's Church, on Front street, and labored with intelligent zeal in behalf of that useful and often victimized class until hie death, or, at least, until overtaken by his last illness. All who ever heard him present the cause of poor Jack in our Various churches, will ieinember hispeeuliar fitness for that responsible missionary post. Mr. Ripley was a member of the Presbytery of Philadelphia. THE PARR CONGREPA.TIONAL Cannon of Brook lyn (Rev. MD. AN AWFUL BENEDICTION.—The Saviour de manded his disciples to return good. for evil, RS curing them that by such a Course they would heap coals of fire on the heads of their..enemies. The following historical incident may be considered an illustration of that policy :• " General Steenbock commanded the Swedish ariay which ; in 1713, reduced the city of. Attune to ashes. In order to avert this calamity from the city a deputation was sent to the General, at the head of which was seen the Lutheran minister, John Sasso, who, on appearing before Steenbock, went down on his knees, and, for the sake of Jesus' wounds., sued for mercy in behalf of the City. Spurning the clergyman away, he exclaimed 4 For the sake of the wounds of Jesus,' the Russians gave no quarter to a e!...ziglo Swede !' Sasse, however, determined not to be repulsed, endeavored, at the last interview, to prevail upon the enraged General to adopt more pacific principles. But all his prayers and intercessions peeved ummtills..,a, Steetibeek pleading that he was acting under orders from his superiors. Sasse said, in a firm tone of voice: c• If that be the case—if you must apply the torch to the ill-fated city, according to the com mand of your superiors, While yourself are inno cent of the dreadful deed—take hence with you, upon your conscience, the blessing of that Lord, who will one day km the judge of us all,' and, with that, he blessed the general in that awful hour, with that well-knowir benediction, The Lord bless thee and keep thee,' Ac. Steenbock trembled and quivered under this benediction ; yet, notwithstanding, he executed his horrible design. But from that very hour, like General Tilly, (who during the thirty-years war bad laid waste the city of Magdeburg, with inhu man cruelty,) nothing but misfortunes befel him, and the close of the Swedish war in Germany saw their general ground his arms, and surrender him self with his whole army prisoners of war to the Danes, near Tonningen. Sonic time after, Steen bock himself died in prison. On his dying couch, he said to the clergyman who administered the sacrament to him : .No curse, of all those with whom I have waged war, rests with such weight upon my soul as the benediction of that minister ; it will continue to torture me, even in my dying moments, for it proved to me the source of dread ful consequences.'
