CITY ITEMS.
During the last eight months, the American Bible So
ciety has fretted 803,000 bibles end Testaments, being
121,000 more titan the issues of the like period the pre
vious year. The average is about 41,000 volumes each
stroking day, or access volumes each working minute.
This increase is owing to the great demand for the Scrip
tures for the 11FC , of the volunteers; over half a million
have gone to this object since the 'commencement of the
war. Their receipts, so far, are over 860,000 behind last
year's.
The Pennsylvania Bible Society-, which carries on ope
rations in this State, has, directly or through its nume
rous branches, furnished over 60,000 Testaments gratui
tously to the troops, which includes 21,000 supplied by
their auxiliary, the Philadelphia Bible Society, to those
going from this city,
The Bible Societies of Europe, Asia, and America,
stri:e the organization df the first one in 1804, have issued
over sixty-seven millions of copies in 160 languages, and
comprising IEO versions ; of these, 140 are translations
never before printed. The number of versions now In
teal use, and more or less
- circulating, is 147, It is im
possible to arrive at a correct estimate of the millions
upon millions issued by other sources; but when It is re
membered that the Bible Is and always has been the lead
tog book with the publisher and tradesman, the timber
must appear enormous; end it is incomprehensible that
there el Quid be ono person whose curiosity, if nothing
better, could ,not prompt him to examine with earn a
book that enlists such remarkable zeal for its circulation
in the midst of the most enlightened communities of the
world.
Over thirty-four millions of dollars have beendisbursed
by the two Bible Societies of England and the United
States; a large proportion of which was paid for transla
tions in other languages; and in countries whore there
was no written language, the laborious and tedious work
of making ouo was performed solely that they might
know the contents of this one great Book.
The Pennsylvania Bible Society has a system of local
auxiliaries extending through the State, by which they
distribute Bibles judiciously, and to the extent of moans
furnished them. About thirty years ago they gave
810,000 to send Bibles to the Sandwich Islands, and con
tinuo to give large sums for aiding distribution in foreign
lands. The Bible house, Seventh and Walnut, was built
for them seven years ago by some citizens of Philadel
phia, and hero different Bible Associations meet, and all
matters connected with Bible operations aro attended to;
whilst the Depository attached is the distributing reser
voir for the State.
The Philadelphia Bible Society confines its operations
to the city, and supplies all oar public Institutions, ho
tels, and shipping with Bibles or Testament. Thellinited
States vessels, before leaving port, are visited by their
colporteurs, and all that is wanted in that may furnished.
Atter supplying this horns demand, they give w hat they
can to the State Society for destitute parts of this and
other countries.
