    The Ergl;sh Iron-dlad Steamer Warrior
[F( r The Press.] .
History teaches us that Great Britain has no
friends among the countries of the world that re
fuse to trade with her. We are not likely to
clothe ourselves in English cotton after the a.-
livery of Messrs. Mason and Slidell, or submitting
w un - other demand that is forced upon us in our
present position, and, therefore, it may be wise for
us to inform ourselves thoroughly and immediately
-what preparations we should make for the future.
The Now York papers of Monday received per
telegraph and publish the important information
that a dress parade has taken place on board. the
MAMA! Presser.sia at Washington. while they add
the vitally momentous fact that Mrs. Rieketts Wag
obliged to pay her own hack-hire from Richmond
to Norfolk t but we must devote our energies to the
consideration of more important matters than these,
if we intend, at any future day, to follow the
eleventh commandment, of caring for our own af
fairs instead of allowing England to manage them
for us.
We are Jost now eating an appropriation to build
twenty iron-clad steamers ; but I have seen in no
paper an account of what other countries have
arriVed at by their experiments, and, with year
permission, I send you a few notes relative to the
Warrear, that should be of interest to your
reads t. I name her particularly, lie I had the
pleasure of visiting every corner of her as she was
about leaving the Thames on her first trial-trip,
end because she is the hest sN , Lorii yet ttt it l out in
the way of plated ships, although inferior to others
just now commencing in the yards of England.
The Gfoirc has cert ain ii_d
Talitages ever the 111tr
rior. but I shall obly refer to her in connection
with the rnperior craft, to point out those ad
vantages, remarking. meanwhile, that the French
ship is, as a whole, as inferior to the English, as
the Cie", la In turn superior to the wooden
frigates of our own navy.
The importance of all these matters to us as a
nation Buiq k k,s my reason for addressing you some
what at length on the subject.
The Warrior was built by private coetractors—
Thames Iron Ship Building Company—and was
launched the end of December of last your. Length
over all, 420 foot; beam, bb feet depth, 41 feet ;
tonnage, 0.177 tons, builders' measurement. En
sines, by Penn and Sens, are 1.259 horse power,
nominal; but their red] potter is li tle lass than
6,000 horse ! Each cylinder is 9 feet 4 inches
diameter,' and the evaporation of 2.600 feet of
water par hour is their requirement of rood at full
speed ! Aar main steam pipe is 2 feet S inch dia
meter, while her condensing is aneomplished in two
rooms, jointly measuring 15 feet lung, 12 broad,
and 9 feet high inside, to which a fultsized man
may ebtain access, II passing through the steam
pipe and passages of the slide valves
Iler 40 furnaces beat 10 boilers, each containing
440 tubes, bolding 19 tuna of water at working
level. Weight of crank and pistons lifted each
revolution is 13 tons, malting LCI ftm4 Obi isii1111•1 at
full speed. Steam shaft is one piece malleable
iron, 30 feet long and 20 inches diameter, with two
craiks cut out of the solid ! and is one of the
wonders of this great work, Fier sorow is 24 feet
diameter, weigh nig IS 10084 connected with the
steam Aloft by 120 feet of shilling, in lengths of
26 feet by IS inches. Screw works un lignum — vitm
befttingo, ihnlend of hens*.
We will now consider the remark-Me feature of
the ship, her 'iron build aunt iron rasing, and I
quote the official description of her, with souse ab
breviatieri.
. .
With no external keel. a series of keelsons take
its place for strength, to which are bolted her ribs,
measuring no less than 3 feet 6 inches deep by I.}
inch t hi c k, ,pd only 22 inches apart below her
water line, which figures sufficiently ladle.% her
style of construction as regards frame. Oriel) deck
is of wood, main and upper decks of iron, cased
with wood, ail on wrought-iron beams. Her iron
pls.nhlsg is wremoht hot' 11 inches to 1 hick thick.
From 5 feet below her water line to her upper deck
is added her plating or armor of teak-wood and
iron, which consist of finest wrought-iron four and
a half judge WO, firmly bolted to u bed of teak
twiny indica thick Her plaice are of scrap-iron
16 feet long by 4 broad, and have sustained the test
hereafter described herein. Her planking. coining
outside the armor, gives :l inches of iron and 20
loam. of teak for her defence. Total weight of
plates is 1,000 tons.
Having described her strength, we now come to
her weakness. Her two ends have no armor—
It covering oril 7 012 feet u.£ her length, while the
Gloirs is completely protected with plates ; but,
meanwhile, the larger ship is rendered compara
tively safe at her ends by an arrangement of water
-14okt 6ampartmantia, and her builders calculate
that her central protected diviAons era sufftsient to
float her in event of any disast: r coming to her
weaker parts; yet nothi,g, but a few engage
ments will cm test thin theory of her contractors.
Now we remora the wonder of wonders. Liar
builders turned her out as nearly inrinrthle as a
ship could be, when red-tapeism and the Admiralty
insist upon putting a frigate's wooden masts into
her, which are Trite likely to t k rio kep to ri6f
some fine day. bile should have lied only jury
rigging, with iron masts, and the less the better.
blow, a well delivered broadside may cover her
and bee settee , with the wreek of three tall masts,
rpm, rigging, and all.
We now come to the armament of the " War
rior!" It is worthy of her! She carries, or pro
carr77 i en 9.ool3.4llistimks Armstrong;
ten 100 pounder Armstrong; twenty-four 88-
pounders. Her ports are egos:rueted in such a
'manner as to retpdre little more width than the
amid size of the muzzle of the gun that occupies
it. It wee feared this would prevent escape of the
smoke, but experience has proved that her broad
side leaves less smoke than usual inboard.
The Warrior's trial trips proved her sliced to be
the outside that wail antictpated. and this is the
,trreat thing that stone of our skips are likely to
7tave ty reports are ty-ne that We hear of their in ;
tended rontruction,an4 preersety what we
*lust have 'if 'VP fitly' to kerp oar navy ur oett,
This first-built iromplared ship. with full coal and
stores, is good for fourteen knots in a sea-way, with
steam alone, while she will, under certain riro,-
. " - f.bitter sail, she is a log—will neither wear, steer,
nor stay ! In fact, her tnas's are useless, and may
prove her ruin finally. I am unable to give her
stowage for end or consumption, hut have been told
she can carry ten days' supply, full Weatning.
Finally, I must record the teat that her armor is
capable of sustaining. A target, representing a
notion of the frarrior - f tilde, was erected, at Shoe
buryness, for practice et two hundred yrra's dis
tance. After hammering at it with 100, 120, and
200-pounder hats, without effect, the final die.
charge was from six guns simultaneously, throwing
three 900 pound bolts at one marked spot, and
three of same at a second mark, on the target, each
gun being loaded with sixteen pounds of powder!
The effect of the whole w °old not have damaged
the Warrior materially, es ii Ml* fm,1 1 14 eye targt
was only partially Injured in intim dorrant points.
Volumes might be written of details in regard to
the ships building; but, meanwhile, we have
enough here to teach us a lesson in our own yards.
We muss build for eir,,,l before all else, nod, to 6, 3 / 2
that., we may safely dispense with half the weight
in building. The - Warrior is certainly far heavier
than is necessary. judging frem the test described
above i hat ~..aaaalale, the asset dtweriptien of
iron best adapted for- rest:dance to shot has only
been discovered by experiments continued during
two years in England, and tkat is one of the most
important questions involved in the matter.
Finally, I may add that Mu hnglish have now
ready a sister ship to the Warrior in all particu
lars, named the Black Prince, while the Resist
ance and Defence, of MO tons and DS guns, are
c i te tv . jur i c ik,A, Wei aro Halo better thorn rallurezt,
and can never appear on our side of the Atlantic.
The Hector and Valiant, also building, but not

While we were "England's best customer," we
were also ceurins, - "brothers," and
many other endearing ties existed ; but we will not,
wear English shirts in future, and shall no doubt
receive in full measure the s‘inle quantity of insult
and abuse that they have bestowed on the French
during the past ten years, during which Napoleon
has raised their fear and jealousy : that Russia
receives periedically, as a petty local difficulty
arises to euoomtrowt the Lope to. .he 111 position
to re eat it, and tr-ar. all Germi'ny will continue to
suffer from while she remains a divided and un
maritime nation. Our tarn is im the future; and
I hope iozzi-' teitiAß9 will all read and pander en
Dir. Donald bleSay's letter in poir number of to
day, and that we shall give all heed to what he
says of future preparation. He is too much a
wooden-ship builder to fully value the merits. or
say demerits, of his propo4ed ivoodm fleet, &W
-eyer, and is apparently not aware that the late ex
periments in England are illustrating the useless
character of iron-plating for wooden ships, and
that it is more than mot - labia that ill° Royal Al
fred, Royal Oak, - Caledonia, and Triltinph,
named by him, will never be completed or launched.
Your obedient servant, 1.
