OUR CHRISTMAS HOUSE. [Written for The Press.] It came up from the city the Friday before Christ mas, all nicely packed up in a box, and never did chest, bag or bundle undergo a more rigid scrutiny from the most careful of custom-house officers, than the outside of that box did from the children. Alas! it was only Thursday, so not the slightest hint could be given concerning its contents, except that "it was something for Christmas." This provoking item of information nearly excited a rebellion among the children. Nell, their fiery little loader in all mischief, declared that "ho would get the big hatchet and chop it open ;" but he desisted from all hostile attempts, however, on being in formed that Christmas presents would break like everything else, and bad children get, whipped the week before Christmas, as well as the week after. That night, when all the children were asleep, the box was opened, and the house lifted carefully out. We stowed it away in a dark corner of the parlor, and, to secure the treasure from the efforts of the native American spirit of exploration and discovery, we lucked the door. The box was placed on the back porch until its services should be again required, The next morning, all the children were up bright and early. As soon as it was possible, every room, closet, and pantry, from attic to collar, un derwent an eager but thorough examination; stil the box could not be found. " May be it's in the fArlor," said Della, for hitherto the stately stainers of this room had been left undisturbed. This sug gestion was immediately acted upon—a loud shoat of triumph announced their arrival at the parlor door—a someabat lower groan of vexation, the dis covery that it was locked. A consultation was held, and a deputation appointed to go to mamma and demand the keys in the name of the children. All were waiting in somewhat noisy expectation, when the two little ambassadors came sorrowfully back with this answer : " All the Christmas cakes cud things ere in the rifler, se we hate toe key, and mamma says we must some right away to breakfast." The little explorers turned mourn fully away, and with solemn steps and slow, re. traced their late exultant path, a caravan of woe. Across the hall, through the sitting-room, they rdleMetl, and entered the dining-room where we were seated at breakfast. Their doleful, dejected appearance was truly comical, and It was with sonic difficulty that we restrained our tisibilities as they marched slowly through the room, and had nearly reached the door when the kitten darted across their path, Harry gave checo and the rest followed in hot pursuit; further restraint was im possible, and a merry laugh followed their hasty exit at the side door. When the end of the back porch was reached, the Utica's power of attraotion was overcome by that of a more powerful force— there stood the box! Then arose a shout of tri umph, followed by N.annie's voice exclaiming, in mournful tones, " It's empty, all except the shay. lags!" In silence they turned away and came in to breakfast, maintaining an air of injured dignity, and indignantly refusing all consolation. As looked at their faces I could not help thinking of the lamentation of Jeremiah: it Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? Behold, and 800 if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow." Christmas eve came at last, the clock struck seven, and the children went off to bed. As soon as they were safely disposed or, an impromptu ta ble was formed, about one-half the length of the sitting-room, and covered with a white cloth. The house was brought from its dark hiding-place and duly installed at the west end. There it stood, the garden and all occupying nearly one-half of the ta ble. It was a perfect queen of all baby houses ; you never saw one half so bgantiftli, Was it wood ? Well, yes, it was wood ; but it had been so nicely sanded, the house a light fawn color, and the win dow pieces and door posts pure white, that no doll could ever have told it from real stone_ It was two stories high, bad real glass windows, and a elate (colored) roof. In front there was a piano 'radix g down by two stops into the garden, and on both sides of the porch stood tall flower urns, containing some very foreign-looking plants. There was a beautiful little front door, with a ki: 19 1,) and bell, that would open and admit within its sa cred precincts all visitors under six inches high. At the side there was a lattice-work all up to tue second story, and two vines ran up after the lat tice-work, and poked their green branches into the bed-room windows, forming a pretty contrast with the white curtains. Two more inquisitive sprays ctozoteroll around to the trout of lie he n c e , an d, holding on to the roof of the piazza to keep them selves up, peered in at the middle window. But you would have forgiven their curiosity, for they looked so beautiful besides, they were discreet little branches, and never told the trees or daisies in the garden below what they saw inside of that 1i%09 4 All PIaPW 44" c AO se prudent; you remember how the reeds and rushes told that "King Midas has asses' ears." At the other tide of the house. the parlor window looked out into the dearest little sonservatory that ever existed; and oh, the plants and flowers that were inside of it! There were tall plants with small flowers, and shotE i,lasts with odd-shaped leaves and big queer looking flowers, medium-sized plants with all kinds of flowers, and a few with no flowers at all They were such very wonderful looking plants that It would hare puzzled wiser beads than yours or mine to tell what order they were. One thing is certain, they did not belong to the Linnean system, Or any other system swept the system of our baby house. There was a side door, too, not quite so handsomely paneled and grained as the front deer, but a very pretty little door for all that, with a porch to it, and seats on both sides, the very place for dolls to rest after they had been walking. And the garden, too—sach a beautiful garden, with n moss border all eroded close to the fence, where the pink and white daisies grew. There was a round moss plot in the middle, and a fancy shaped one on each side ; there were bushes and tither?. vitm trees, and real saados f es walks. There never was such a garden or such a Christmas house in the world before. After the house was finished, we fixed the other toy,. Jostle Prost tf the s.far•lert ,Pros a regiment of Zouaves, two inches high, furiously charging a meek, innocent-looking grizzley bear, six inches high; their charge was supported by one rifled ca non, seven Inches rang, and a brass mounted field piece of equal dimensions. The bear appeared to be seeking refuge in a large building, where was clbraitiled a no less huge, gray, stupid ele, pkan, guarded by a very lazy Turk. This house was the building attached to a zoological garden, the inha bitants of which were enjoying themselves in va thins ways, as best suited their tastes. Some were staring stupidly at the Zouaves, others eating strange little tufts of grass in the most determined mapper, and as the tufts never gem arty test, I thought, perhaps, the sculptor took the idea from the widow's cruse of oil and handful of meal. A tall giraffe was making apparent rapid progress to ward a fold where a number of remtudtably wLtte sheep were guarded from all danger by the united efforts of two shepherds as high as themselves, and two dogs somewhat higher. In one corner of the garden were a company of mounted sirens riders, who rode around a ring at an incredible rate when you turned the wire. Close by stood the musician, tiesperatel, horegueringstaray tat a wooden drum, probably to the tune " the old cow died on." Not far off an acrobat was performing for his own bane- At and that of the 1/Pitfalls, apparently to the setts faction of both parties. In close and somewhat dangerous proximity to the menagerie, was a Dutch market, with its stalls of real (tV1)6.46.15) P=olls, etc. A number of comical little Dutch men and women were busily engaged in making silent bargains with reference to said articles. The number of buyers and sellers was materially increased by the midi= tion of two families of " Noahs," who had been ruthlessly torn from their respective arks. Miss Shem, the taller, was disemssing the merits of sense very shiny potatoes with a fat, smiling little Dutch man, and Noah himself was pointing his staff in the most hostile manner at some piqh ehgrriCE guarded by a blushing damsel. Far off, on the other side of the table, the two arks rested on the same piece of rock, while their respective families of animals wandered disconsolately about its base, seeking their masters and finding them not. The dove, with an olive branch in his mouth, perched on the top of the ark until the glue dried, then, n? charitabie Noah appearing for his help. he fell to the rocks below, learning. as Woolsey did by bitter experience, "not to put his trust in princes." There were all sexes, sorts and kinds of dells, from the beautiful French was doll, With her flounced illusion dress and bright red bows, down to a veritable representative of Tommy and there were cups and saucers to cuts them all. Close by a tea garden, there was a rabbit peeping out of a strange-looking butch at a cat and two kittens. -1 3 14 PEW need int have bean afraid of them, for they could not have stirred an inch to save their lives. Then there was a little girl easing a rabbit that ran away as fast as she ran after it A man was centittually chasing two chickens with that/Ma sne• eess, and a little boy with a wind wheel was hope lessly persisting in his endeavors to catch up to a yellow and white dog. Well might Campbell say, cc _Man never is, but always I could not tell you of all the dolls' furniture that furnished the bedrooms and parlor. It just suited the house, and you will acknowledge that anything that ruiteti our 'Ohrietinne home must have been very beautiful. An English parson, book in hand, regarded the whole Fcenn with a be nevolent look; but above, and overshadowing all, even as Gail 7 a toss oos Tres the Chth'inas tree—Eo tall, so luxuriant, that It had to be dressed on the floor, and then elevated to its poet of honor. It was a wonderful tree, and, like the one in the Revelation, beta allaranaar of beau tiful fruit. When all this was done we filled the stockings, labelled them, and hung them in the chimney, ready for tie morrow. Giving one more look at our Christmps Luse. we starfici fqr bgil. I peered t h roug h ti re cldntrcn's rooms, and heard confused murmurs of `• Kris Kringle." dolls," whips," "horses," and " sugar plums." My thoughts went back to the child Jesus. to the glo ries of the wondrous ni4hrof the Nativity ; and I softly prayed— " God rest ye, little children, let nothing you affright, For JOrills Christ, your Saviour, eras horn this happy night." And now, merr y . 0113413411135 in all, aZta Cod rest ye all, good Christians, let noth - ng you dismay, For Jeans Christ, our Saviour, was horn on Christmai day." As a Christmas present for the thousands of our readers whose origin will enable them to understand and enjoyit, we comply with the request of some of our friends to republish the following touching poem, written by a pious and learned Pennsylvania pastor, ! in the vernacular of many thousands of the people in our State, whose origin, from different parts of Germany, and daily contact with people speaking. only English, has led them to speak in a tongue mixed up of the most incongruous elements. It is worthy of preservation, at a specimen of a language once used by a hundred thousand of the inhabitants of our State, but now rapidly becoming entirely extinct, under the operation of our common-school hyakezn : Wer Toned da heme ia, 1111' wilt fort, 8o les ihn minutia gob : Ich sag flan aver forna naus, E@ is flll iii 101 1 ,111; 4wtl tirmial 171' er word's seller nen.
