FOOLISH RUMORS.- - Yesterday afternoon a rumor
Was set afloat, which, like a rolling snowball,
gained dimensions as it proceeded. It was to the
effect that errors had been discovered in the count
ing, and defective ballots rejected, and that the
canvass would prove Mr_ Gunther to have been
elected. These reports came to our ears early in
the day, but having already informed ourselves of
the true state of the case, we did not deem it worth
while to alarm the public by the publication of
them.

of a certificate to Mr. Gunther, under the circum

narrowest partisan ended. There is r 011.4011 to
believe that those now eager to show that Mr.
Gunther has been elected are secretly hostile to the
Government, and in favor of the continued rule of
Mozart Hall.
It is giving almost too much prominence to the
rumors to disprove them. But tfie friends of purity
of elections perhaps ought to receive some assu
rance. There were three lists made of the votes
given in every election district of the city—one for
the Pollee Board, one for the Trsbaae, and one for
Mfr. Opdyite. These nearly agree. They were
signed and certified by the canvassers and
clerks. Besides, there were lists kept for other
