Alexan der Crummel, AT THE CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY', LAST EVENING. There tins a large congregation assembled at the Churel. of the Epiphany, last evening, to hear an ai dree. from the her. Alexander Crimnel, (colored ) ) clergyman of the Potestant Episcopal Church in Libe ria, on " The Advancement and Prospects of Missions, Commerce, Industry, and Civilization along the West COM of Africa," The preliminary devotional exorcises were conducted by the Right Bey. Bishop Potter, as sisted by Rev. Mr. Cracraft, rector of the Epiphany. Mr. Ceummel is well remembered by many of our cid fffnitTlY Motor of ft church in this city—as a highly talented and efficient minister of the Gospel; and I.y his colored brethren—a liberal sprinkling of Wit" a were in attendance last evening—he is deserved ly chi tidied as a notable example of the culture of which the African, under favorable circumstances, is suscepti ble. Mr. (rmnmel was educated in England, and in his manlier and address evinces the polish of a scholar, and the spirit of an intelligent divine. Although an unmixed African. there is scarcely anything in either his matter or enunciation to indicate that fact. lie opened by reminding his hearers of the hitherto benighted character of the continent of Africa, on the one hand, and the transition state through which it was now passing., Linder the dawninglight of Christianity and civili zation. Physical causes, which he explained, had, in a great measure, cut Africa off from the intincnee Qt en the old civilizations. But the long night of ignorance was now gradually giving way to a brighter day, through the power of philanthropic and missionary enterprise. The regenerAive gale of the negro race was, in some parts of Wet-E.:ern Africa, assuming an organic form. One of the fir.-t causes conducing to this end was the progress of commero.—commerce as it was to-day. Originally, commerce there had been but a robber, a devastator, and a murderer ; but a healthy change was now in rapid pro gress. The first item enumerated and dwelt upon, in this connection, was the growth and exportation of cot ton, v.hiel, was annually assuming greater importance. The eCarect:On of the former geographical errors en tertained respecting that land by intelligent travellers, Ledyaul. Livingstone, and others ) had also contributed much tow aids its regeneration The various missions established there, at Sierra Leone. and other places, were next referred to. Another powerful auxiliary of civilization in the Western coast of Africa e ns the formation of colonies—of Bores, Liberia, Gatnhia_ and others, some of width he eaid contained na tive A fricans, whose notes would be taken,in London to-day for.fso,oPo or £BO,OOO. The c atom - at Liberia, established by the American Colonization Society, was described at length. The effect of this colony, composed largely of American negroes, had been to destroy effectually the slave trade on that coast for a distance of more than six hundred miles. In commerce and agriculture the country was rapidly progreasing. Hundreds" of ACM WerfinOW annually de. voted to the cultivation of sugar cane and ether pro ducts. A college, also, hail recently been established on the heights of Monrovia—an event which the speaker said would form an epoch, not only in the history of Li beria, but of Africa. Heretofore many colored youth had been sent to England to be educated, where they fre quently died from the comparative severity of the cli mate, but the establishment of this institution would in future preclude the necessity of sending their children out of their own land to be educated. As au evidence of the progress of Christianity in West ern Africa. he said that, within a comparatively brief - period, one hundred churches had been erected; two hundred schools had been established, and more than two thou and children were now feeeivine instruction in the English language; the various churches numbered some thirteen thousand communicants, and the Holy Scriptures had been reduced to writing in twenty-five different native dialects. It was undoubtedly true that the - English language was soon destined to be the language of Africa, thus placing it under the influence of Anglo-Saxon civilization. He saw the hand of God in this. The nation which had di tie more then any other to propagate elirrery was now being made the most effective agent in elevating the negro race. Thousands of the colored popeb A tion of that region were men who had been educa ted in New England and other parts of the United States. God, he Fair], never allowed an evil to calif as an aggre gate of evil., without relieving it with good, When Joseph bad told his brethren that not they, but God had sent bim into Egypt, to save life, he had not meant that they bad not acted brutally towards him-, but he had seen and accepted the wise and benevolent intent of God in its true light. So he believed that the Nig yearp of mrica'a enstavement were yet to be forgotten, or at least only remembered al an instrument of wondrous beneficence in the overrulings of an all-wise God. Large masses of native negro children in various parts of Africa, were, he said, now being educated in Christian schools, and greater things were rapidly ma turing. The children of Israel had wandered forty years in the wilderness, and at length bad made more progress in the lost single year than during the previous thirty nine, and entered the promised land. So, he felt a deep conviction that the rust year, to effect the triumphant deliverance of his down-trodden race was drawing rapid ly nigh. Yee, the day, he believed, IMO not far distant when Ethiopia, from sea to sea, shall indeed stretch forth her bands unto God. BAYARD TUMOR. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. THE MONEY MARKET. PHILADELPHIA, DOCOmber 2,1861 A very meagre business was transacted at the Stock Board to-day, and prices generally remain unchanged. Stan) fives improved N. In the money market there is no alteration from the condition reported by us from time to time for many weeks. Prime endorsed paper is in demand at bank rates, when not too long to maturity, and at 8 to 10 /P' cent when long dated, but other deseriptiOnS of promis sory uotos ore not readily sold, and credit continues dear. This is the more to be wondered at, perhaps, as trade is steadily reviving, and there can be little doubt that the houses which have thus far survival the evil effects of the war will go on and prosper under the renewed au- Priceti of good business.
