THE MONEV MARKET.
PHILADELPHIA, October 26, 1861
Somewhat more animation was displayed at the Stock
Board to-day, though the whole amount of bmineill
transacted was still light. City Sixes were dull. State
Fives sold at 76V, closing more Srm. Pennsylvania
Railroad securities exhibited an *inward tendency, but
other favorite railroad stocks and bonds were without
Variation from previous quotations.
In the money market, matters remain in neaaq• the
name condition on during the put with, capital is
abundant, and good paper sells u rut ee It appears ou
the street—the greater part, however, being discounted
in bank.
The Lehigh Valley Railroad Company will pay the
couponedue upon iM bonds on the let of November, and
the dividend to atockhoklere on the 14th of November,
the transfer books being closed from November let l 0
14th.
The Lehigh Talley Railroad tannage tor the week is
15,875 tons, a decrease of 738 tons, as compared with the
cotrerponding week in 1860, reducing the increase for
no year to 2,087 tons—the whole amount carried this
year Leing 661,179 four. - The iron tonnage for the year

A Butiato paper gives an idea of the pressure of grain
freights for the seaboard RS follows:
" While the railroads and canals of New York State
are doing all they can in moving produce to the sea
board, the railroads of Canada mid the vessels of Lake
Ontario and the St. Lawrence are moving vast quanti
ties over their rout", The Great NVeeteni Railway took
a contract to convey 200,000 bbls. of o.somls dour from
the upper part of the Province to Portland for foreign
ahipment. The company - made a contra, t with the ma
nagers of the Grand Trunk route by which they could
run this flour over their road from London to Portland.
The Great Western Company furnish.the ears and meo.
inatliTS, and the Grand Trunk Company the engineers and
onductvrs. All the Great Western trains retails empty[
as the Orateel Trunk Cnmpany r. serve the us freight for
its own returning trains." The Toledo Blade sap , : A
freight train recently arrived in that city over the Wa
bash Railroad, which /insisted of one hundred and
neventy-ftve ltatded cars. Allowing thirty-two feet to
each car, the train was one mile aid thirty rods 'in
length."
Prom the'Philadelphia Car Works there ila3 retentiy
been delivered the last of two hundred eight-wheel cars,
built to the order of the Westmoreland Coal Company,
for service on the Pennsylvania• 'Railroad. These cars
have steel springs, and are, in all respects, a superior
"article. A coal equipment is gradually expanding on
the rennsylvania Railroad, wldCh road already moves a
Large coal tonnage, and which, with the progressing de-
Telopment of the ittoad Top coal field and additional
shipments from points west of Huntingdon, will soon
have a coal trade quite equal in tons to most of the
.
great carriers from the anthracite mining districts.
The New York Evening Post or to-day says:
Stocke opened firm with some animation, but dosed
-dull. The market is adversely alr , cted by a Vague re•
port that the private secretary of the commander of the
autval expedition had absconded. The story has been
circulating around the city for a day or two past.
The foreign Achange market closes rather flat for the

A long time ago,
(How long I don't know.)
A youth lively and fair

Ile was happy and gay,
As the chroniclers salt
And handsome to boot
In his holiday suit.
And When he surveyed
The figure be made
In a mirror of metal,
Or perhaps a brass kettle,
(For then looking-glasses
Were unknown to.the masses,)
'Tie said the poor elf
Fell in love with himself!
Ile gazed and stilt gazed,
And so became crazed.
Take Warning. genie all,

In the glass you survey,
