Between seven and eight hundred horses have
been furnished for the use of the soldiers. but, in
consequence of a searci.y of saddles and the neces
sary harass:, the beasts have not yet been trained,
and are kepi in stables about the neighborhood, a
large number being let out to pasture on the camp
grounds. The major of the regiment is now in
Washington, endeavoring to procure requisitions

A number of companies have not yet boon fully
organized. Of the above officers, three-tourths
'lave been in active service heretofore; and, upon
the whole. the regiment has a bettor reputation . for
being properly ellieereti then any yet rimed in thi4
city.
TWENTY-SIXTII REGIMENT
The Twenty-sixth Pennsylvania li.c , riment is now
encamped at Bladensburg, Md., and has been at
tached to the hrigade of Bripilier Genoral Joseph
Hooker. a grndnste of West Point, who served with
distinction in the Mexican war, Lieutenant Wil
liam T. Baum is now in the city recruiting men, in
order to fill up the regiment.
GOSLI.IiI-;:t, %AWAY ES
Camp Gibson is situated in Jones' Woods, on the
Lancaster ttanpike, about tbrue-quarters of a mile
from ilestonville. The Pennsylvania Zouavcs.
(Forty , fifth Regiment PcntuviVallia Volunteers.)
commanded by Colonel John 51. Gos line, is located
here. 700 teen are now in tent, end the remaining
300 hundrtd will shortly arrive from the city. It
is expected that live hundred extra teen can be
raised for this corps within the nttXt ten days.
Their principal recruiting station is at 603 Chest
nut street.
The proportion of three-months volunteers in
this regiment is very large, Company has 66
out of 100. and this. if anything, is below the true
ratio of their enrolment,.
The following is a list of the officers :
Company A. Thomas J. Town; company B, Enos
Baldwin : cumrany C, Ilubbs; company D. Hall ;
company E, ; company F, Bates: com
pany Carroll; company R. Primer; company
I, Franklin ; company K, Hughes.
Colonel Gesline is over six feet in height,
and about 31 years of age. He has been in the
State service for twelve or fourteen years, and has
acquired a thorough military education.
The following, are his staff officers; lieutenant
colonel, Gustavus V. Town ; major, Stubbs; adju
tant, Eugene Minn ; quartermaster, John Haviland.
The regiment has now been encamped for four
weeks. Tents are being erected for the men as
fast as they arrive. The style of uniform adopted
by this regimem is much to be admired and com
mended. It is ornamental without tawdriness;
warm and comfortable, and, withal, quite servicea
ble. The camp-grounds cover an area of five
acres, and have been adorned with dwarf palm , trees.
Regular religious service is held every Sunday
morning. The chaplain, Rev. Mr. Jackson, of St.
Paul's Church, (Catharine street,) is highly spoken
of by his 2onueo etmgregation.
COL. MOREHEAD'S REGIMENT
Camp Baker. at lladdington, West Philadelphia,
is now occupied by the Pennsylvania Fifth Regi
ment (Col. Morehead), constituting a portion of
Baker's brigade. Five hundred men, about one
third of whom were three-months volunteers, are
MP encamped here, and hare been for the last
two weeks.
Colonel Morebeaa's staff embraces the following ,
officers: Adjutant Pleiss, Quartermaster Gambles,
and Lieut. Col. Corry, A major has not yet been
appointed.
Nearly all the recruits are enrolled at the camp.
We subjoin a list of the commanding officers of
the companies (five in number)now encamped here :
Company B. Capt. Vaughan ; C, Capt. Britten
bench ; D. Capt Allen ; E, Capt. Neumann ; F,
Capt. Clarke.
Portions of other companies, under the command
of Captains Ford and Bartleson, are also here, and
will be ready to move in a few days.
The camp covers at least ten acres, and is well
wooded and watered. On Saturday afternoon. the
men (who are fully equipped) were reviewed by
Col. Baker. The colonel, it will be remembered,
was wounded in the arm a short time since, but has
sufficiently recovered to be at his post.
Lieut. Col. Corry has now temporary command
of the camp, during Col. Morehend's absence.
COL. RAKER'S SAPPERS AND MINERS
There arc Dow about 300 men at liaddington,
W. P. They will be attached to Col. Baker's Bri
gade as a sappers and miners corps, and, we be
lieve, are the only such corps in tho same service
from this city. The Sappers and Miners Fire
Zonayea 7 as the ergszwation is styled, eorapued
entirely of pracliral mechanics, with the exception
of the officers. who aro all civil engineers.
They are officered as follows : Captain, W. M.
Wooldridge ; first lieutenant, James Patterson;
second limiter:era, William Carman.
On reaching WR_Qhingtou the men will be fur
nished with Millie rides, with sabre bayonets.
The sabre is four 'miles broad, and heavy enough
en the point to be used as a hatchet in lopping off
the branches of trees.
BAXTER'S ZOITAYES
Companies L and M. Captains Reiley and Snp
plee, of Baxter's Fire Zonaves, are encamped at
iladdington. and will share the destinies of the
sappers and miners. The man hare been indus
triously drilled since their entree upon field life.
Drills are a mutter of daily occurrence, as are also
the morning end evening dress parades.
BALMER'S REGIMENT
Col. Baßier's regiment, which has been encamped
opposite the depot of the Ridge-avenue Railway
Company. struck their tents at noon yesterday, in
Compliance with orders from Washington.
The Sappers and Miners, companies L and. M of
Baxter's Fire. Zonaves, the balance of Col. More
head's regiment, and the Pennsylvania Zouaves,
were ordered to leave at eleven o'clock last night.
It is not probable any of these orders have been
countermanded.
BET. COL. McCARTER'S REGIMENT
Col. J. W. McCarter, whose regiment is now en
camped at Lebanon. Pennsylvania, has received
some accessions to his ranks from this city. Capt.
John Chase intends raising a company in West
Philadelphia to be attached to this regiment. The
rendezvous is at Commissioner's Hall, West Phila
delphia.
COLONEL McLEAN'S REGIMENT
Having been ordered to hold themselves in rea
diness to move, the regimental headquarters have
been transferred to Camp Stokely, on Ridge ave
nue, above the Falls of Schuylkill. The men have
been supplied with uniforms, under-clothing, etc.,
and arerapidly approaching a state of fitness for ac
tive duty. The unifolm is a darkblue, regular army
overcoat, blouse, end frock coat, with the army
cap. The officers have now open some ten or
twelve recruiting stations. The number of men in
camp is about TOO. Attached to this regiment is a
fine band of twenty-four pieces, including a drum
corps, under direction of Drum Major Kelly, who
lately served in Col. Morehead's regiment.
The following ere the names of the present offi
cers: colonel, S. P. McLean; lieutenant colonel,
Jos. McLean ; major, Geo. W. Gila ; first surgeon,
.John H. Seltzer; second surgeon, John Mitchell;
adjutant, D. M. Foust. Company A, Captain
Enabb; B, M%ers ; C, Belsterling ; D, Fairlamb ;
F, Denham; 11. Griffith.
Col. McLean has been connected with the volun
teer force for about twenty years. He was a major
in Colonel Morehead's regiment during the three
months service. and proved himself a very efficient
officer. The other staff and company officers have
mostly done duty on the tented field.
Lieut. Col. McClain and Captain Griffith are now
on a visit to Harrisburg, to see about the arms for
the regiment. From thence they proceed to the
national capital on the same errand. Their inten
tion is, if possible. to procure the Millie musket
for their command. The companies mustered in
have refused to receive the old altered musket that
has been offered, alleging that those weapons are
inefficient.
Three of the companies in camp are from Read
ing, the rest from this city. 'The design is to re
cruit up to I_soo men—one-third of which number,
it is expected.. will be raised after the regiment
has taken the field. A peculiarity.of the camp is
that hot coffee is furnished during the night, regu
larly every two hours, to the guard on duty. This
a to counteract the influence of the miasma, which
arises from the river, and is frequently very op
pressive on the lungs of those who have to in
hale it.
LINCOLN CAYALEY.
Two companies of this regiment are now recruit
ing in the city, one of which is encamped in a woods .
on Turner's lane, commanded by Capt. John Fitz
water. The regiment is at present stationed about
two miles from Washington, under command of
Col. Reynolds About eighty men are in camp at
this place, end are awaiting the arrival of horses
in order to drill. These will be received, probably,
to-morrow. A majority of the =OR have been out
is the three-months expedition, and cheerfully ex
press their willingness to serve their country in the
hour of peril. The only officers of the company at
present, beside the captain, are First Lieutenant
Audenreid, and Second Lieutenant H. North.
The other cowpony is being recruited in Market
street, under the superintendence of Capt. San
ford, and expect soon to go into camp.
J. MunnAy R,,n, Esq., has written an able
letter, accepting the nomination of the Citizens'
Union Convention, as a candidate for the State Le
gislature, in the Fourth Representative District of
this city. We regret that the crowded state of our
columns prevents us from publishing it entire, but
the following extract will sufficiently indicate the
patriotic spirit by which he is animated :
" To advocate party now is not to appreciate tho
dangers of our situation, and is to forget the impe
rative obligations of patriotism. If our citizen
soldiers have taken the post of danger, we at
home are left in the post of inflexible duty to them
and to our country. It will give them hope and
confidence, and assuredly withhold from our ene
mies all aid and comfort,' if we abandon all for
mer party organization, and present one solid
column, combined in heart, and hand, and hope,
and purpose, es the colossal party of the Union."
if Moreover, we have domestic traitors among
us. If a .71 ticket were alone presented ; :ii!
patriotic numbers of both parties. those citizens, it
is to be presumed, as independent and candid men,
would say whether they were for or against the
Union and the Administration. Our past party or
ganizations prevents this from being known. But it
is right—it may become absolutely necessary a 4
this civil war progresses—that each man's place be
fully understood.
" The movement for a consolidation of parties ins

Philadelphia would do well to imitate it. A distin

sylvania, Union tickets are rising up in the most
influential portions of the State. The Twelfth Con
gressional district gave, long since, a striking ex
ample of the obliteration of party, in the person of
a distinguished citizen—lion. Hendrick B Wright
—by his unanimous election to Congress by both
parties. For myself, as one citizen, I have urged
this policy from the first; and so long as this war
lasts I will recognize no party but that of wry
country. I core not who administers the Govern

them at the helm, and if they hold it firmly,
and with faithful hearts, to steer us through this
tempest, I will hold to them while they are there
with ' hooks of steel.' "
