Letter from Princeton, N. J.
[Cov»'(‘>v>*.>nrtencfr of The Press.]
Princeton College, Sept. 26,1861,
The recent excitement in college; cooling Reces
sion proclivities beneath the pump; the suspension
of threo students from our State for tho offence;
their triumphal procession to the depot, and the
general determination of tho students to crush re
bellion in our midst—all haw way to the Wl3*
<iom and patriotic decisions of the faculty, and loft
ns apparently a better people. Secession is dead
in college, and its former advocates are doing what
would be a delightful spectacle in tho whole South,
viz : living without any manifestation of hostility
to their native land and her rulers.
To-day the tokens «>f God's favor IlflVO been
highly encouraging, and especltlly so in their in
crease since morning as the eland which rose like a
man's bead. Wo have had more than a Sabbath
quietude—business offices, stores, and work-shops
have all been closed, the street frequented only in
passing to and from church, and, above nil, a deep
spiritual influenoe pervading everywhere. At
seven o’clock this morning, religious services com
menced, and have been continued at almost every
hour during the day. Never before has the pro
clamation of a ruler been, in this place, the occa
sion of such assemblies—such earnest prayers—
such deep humility and dependence upon God
ns has been witnessed this day. The First
Church was crowded before eleven o’clock—
the hour for service—bad arrived. During
tho mooting, Dr. Hodge presented tho fol
lowing impromptu, yet beautiful, train of
thought 1 t: Sucll eager as«emhlu*s are this day in
hundreds and thousands of towns throughout our
land, and millions are bowing before God. He has
wrought it all, and can we mo see in it ike as
surance that our desires are heard? Yet we must
not. suppose our fasting is meritorious. Moreover,
there is this day a national acknowledgment of
God—of His being, His attributes, His sovereignty,
and ov.r dependence.” Rev. Mr. Mann also mado
some appropriate remarks. This afternoon tho
Second Church would not accommodate the crowd
of worshippers. Rev. Dr MoUvaine, of tho Col
lege, presented the idea that among the causes of
our chastisement is our long repudiation of religion
in polities, and wondered not thit corruption was
so rife, and that multitude* disregard, without scru
ple, their oaths of obedience to the Constitution.
Allow mo to add, the resnU- of this day would be
happy if this single error were to be removed. May
we not trust that it will be done; yea. more, that
Gcd means to raise us tip from our affliction and
Imndlity. and that He will fight our battles for US ■
Carroll.
Coki*o«al Murpht, who was one of tho men
ecimected with the Irish Brigade of Colonel Mulli
gan, denies that they were required to give a pro
mise not to again eDgage in the war. Tho Chicago
I*osi of the 26th says
Cort-orfll Murphy assuras us that the men did
not lake an oath not to fight again against tho
rebels, as it has been represented they did. Tlioy
took no obligation of any kind whatever, and were
not fiskgd to do so. Had such an obligation been
required, the majority of them would have refused
to take it. They were allowed to depart uncondi
tionally, after being stripped of their accoutre
jucnls.* The rebelß had hud quite enough of them,
and considered their room numb better than their
company. He assures us that nearly every man
ill the brigade is ready and anxious to take the
field Again, and with a d«f*rrmnution to take se
vere revenge for their present defeat.
The Charleston papers publish the follow
ing order from Brigadier Gt ueril ffipley :
il Citizens residing on Sullivan’s Island will hold
themselves in readiness ta proceed to the city on
short- notioo. Circumstances only can determine
when, or at what moment, it may be absolutely ne
cessary to order a removal from the Island.”
That is to say, they are expecting a visit from the
Federal fleet.

These nominations have been made with as little re
gard to partv politics as possible. Tho Judicial candi
dates art* the able, and honest Judges who
wm'elected by tlie peuplu to their pre.-ont ixisitious ton
yearn ago. ]t was the unanimous opinion of tho Gun*
vention that th»* purity and efficiency of tho Judiciary
can only be maintained by a distinct separation of tho
office from the contestnof political pnrties; and that it
would, therefore, be inexpedient, aud hostile to the pub
lic interests, to remove from the bench, without cause,
thowi who are acknowledged as lo>al citizons, and have
proved competent and pure in tho iwlministration of just
ice. For thi-ne reasons the Convention uuQuimously
agreed to recommend to their follow-citizens the re
election of tho present Judges.
AH the nominees for the other offices are believed to be
entitled to the confidence, and worthy to receive tllO
VOte«i of the people. Tin! candidate f*>r Sheriff,
of Will?, Otftrk of the Orplwma* Oourt, City Tromiurur,
and City Commissioner, wore all nomiaatwl without a
suggestiou or hint from either of them, that either of
them desired office. They wore selected from a largo
number of names suggested to the Convention by our fel
low-citizens, solely with reference to their loyalty, ho
nesty, and capacity. Tlteir election by the people will
be the first important step towards purifying• some-of
those offiooH of tho corruption atri dishonesty for which;
they are notorious. The practice of extorting illegal
ices from i vory citizen who enters them on business, for
which office fees are payable, has become so oppressive
and offensive to the public as to demand a rebuke, which
tho people only can give, by breaking down party tines,
and electing houof-.t men to such positions, who will re
form the abuse. Mich «n opportunity U now presented.
Our candidates are publicly pledged to do so, ami they
nro men who will neither forget nor violate tl*eir pledges.
They know that we are earnest in our determination to
put an end to such frauds, ami they will help ns do it.
But, in chi-; work, we must have the co-operation of our
ftUo\v»citi:ejis of all parties. Thorn is nothing that
•hould divide ufe nou*j we all stand i.n the same pmici
p]es all, nt least, who are loyal to the flag of our coun
try—who are ready to defend it against all its enemies,
ami unfurl it again, uml uphold it in its full glory in the
rebellious .States, where it lias been insulted and tram
pled upon
Our Hormnts, all of them, must be loyal and rosest
aewcll us loyal. Unfortunately, there are many men
among us who declare themselves for the Government,
for the wav and its vigorous prosecution,-whose patri
otism never goes beyond parly lines, and is kept alivo by
tlie hope- of-i'i-'BLra plcxdkh. If we intend to protect
and pveserve the institutions of our country wo must tako
care that such persons do not get control of them through
our hi!u<l Adherence to party nominaticun,- or tho in
fluence and patronage of public offices.
It is well known that for some years past nearly all our
representatives to tho State Legislature, nominated and
elected through the machinery of party politics, have so
disgraced and dishonored our <*ity by their venality, in
capacity, and bad conduct that Philadelphia has lost all
her good influence in the legislation of the Common
wealth, although much of it is vitally important to her
welfare and prosperity. Laws are proposed, relating to
corporations aud clnsscs of citizens engaged in particular
avocations, for tho sole purpose of extorting- monoy
from whose interests they may affect. The
losso-; and distress among the industrious poor and
others of our city, through fraudulent savings in
stitutions and insurance companies, are results of
bad and corrupt legislation. AH citizens aro alifco
interested in pulling an end to such serious calami
ties, and rtv-loriug the influence of our great metropolis,
through honest and capable representatives in the legis
lative halls of the ?tate. Vic believe that our candidates
for tlu-*e iaiporiaut pusitions conu* up to thy standard of
X.OTALTT, noxESTY, anil capacity, doino.of them wore
nominated verv much against their own wishes,, and,
although fully approving tJio objects of tho Convention
and. Hu* principles of its action, they have e.vprossrd
their unwillingness to accept the nomination. But the
Convention has not e:.c used them, because, while so
many thousand?, *«f <»ur citizens, friends, and kiudr«d, uro
iu tlie field, offering their lives in support of our Govern
ment and institutions, we think that no man in civil life
bus ii right to refuse any public service for which he is
qualified, and to which he may be colled by tilt* votes of
the people.
\Vc earnestly invoke every loyal citizen to unit® In sup
port of the principles of public policy nbovo indicated, and
briefly expressed in tlie follo wing declaration, approved
by all the candidates of the Gouvention:
Capt. J. C. CASH,
Recruiting Officer.
I. Tliat the Governnamt of tlie United St«t»'H must he
earnestly sustained by all citizens, in nil iis measures for
tho suppression of treason and rebellion; that our national
existence depends on a vigorous and determined prosecu
tion of the war against those who arc in arm* again&t it;
that tho war must be carried on \vithout <>ncoura«iin£our
cneniiei:, tit homo ami abroad* to hoim for peace on nuy
UTins J-hnrt or ttio absolute submission of all rebels and
traitors to the Constitution and laws: and that,Ju- order
to accomplish these objects successfully and speedily, ail
loyal citizens should now unite in obliterating the party ;
lines which have heretofore'divided them, and stand, with
one accord, under the Hag of our country.
11. The public welfare demands, that the servant*, of
the people shall not only bo loyal to the Federal Govern
ment, but c-tjual to, nud scrupulously exact in, the per
formance of their duties; that all frauds and peculations
of mon tn public oflleo shall be discountenanced and pun
ished ; that those whose compensation in derived from tho
fees of their offices, shall neither charge nor receive, di
rectly or through their subordinate*, or otherwise, any
other or larger fees than nrc allowed by law; and that
public officer* within the limits of thoir resoee.tive-spheres,
shall bo firm, fearle.**, and vigilant, in protecting citizens
from all illegal exactions in these respects.
111. That, as all public offices am created for, they
must bo subordinated to, the public good: and official pa-,
tremago hhould not bu used for partisan purposes, or to
the private advantage of those who bestow It.
IV. That every candidate for office must roly on'his
individual merits and capacity for* his election by tho
people; and efiort* to gain support from-any ixnarter by
bribes, bargains, favors, or promises of favors of any
description, must bo rcgunlcd as evidence <ff dishonestj'
and corruption, which unfits and diSffunlifW hirn for
any position of public trust.
IVo respectfully submit tho proceedings or tlrn Con
vention to our fellow-citizens, for ratification at tho
polls. While our l»rav»* soldiers stand to shoul
der un‘h>r the luaulUvl flag of tho nulion, Forgotfv\l of
party spirit in their strong love of our Country, and all
ready to mingle their life's blood on ho** battle fields, for
the support of our Government and the security of our
homes, we can do nothing lose than imitate their noble
example, and break our party idols, lor the sake of tub
