the Government:

preserve us and our posterity, this, the best of Go

power of the Republicthat we are opposed to
any compromise with traitors, and that we will sup

The resolutions were adopted unanimously.

of the Convention, it is difficult for me to express
how grateful I feel for this mark of your confi
dence. lam proud to belong tothe People’s party,
because it has never among its members shown a

been faithless to his country’s flag. lam for those

Military Matters, —Captain Montgomery
is meeting with the most gratifying success in
Taking a firet-closs regiment tor immediate active
service. A large number of .respectable young
men have already enrolled themselves in the ranks,
and others are preparing to follow their example.
The captain proposes to hold another public meet’
tog, concerning the subject, in the early part of the
comlDg week.
On Saturday evening, a handsome sword, sash,
belt and gloves were presented to Captain Cook, of
Company 1, Baxters Fire Zouaves. The gift was
a testimonial from the Hibernia Fire Company to
an old member, and the ceromony of presentation
was performed at the house of that company. Ex
cellent speeches were made by Cols. James Page
and Philip S, White, and by the recipient of the
testimonial.
The men of Col. Lyle’s regiment of National
Guard 3 will be mustered into service at their
armory, in Bare Street, below Sixth, this morning.
This !o n fine regiment.
A merchant of dhr city, many years connected
with the Weccneoe Fire Engine Company, on
Saturday afternoon presented, through Joseph R.
Lyndall, Esq , to each member of the Weccacoe
Fire Zouaves, (Company B.) a gum blanket, towel,
soap, comb, thread, needles, Ac., very useful arti
cle* in camp life.
The Fire Department will present a set of colors
to Colonel Baxter’s Regiment of Fire Zouaves
to-morrow, at 2 o’clock P. M. The ceremony will
take place in front of the La Pierre Houston
Broad street. Mayor Henry will be present, and
Hon. Richard Vaux will probably receive the colors
on behalf of the Zouaves.
FrttUCiS Ashton, a young Philadelphian, died in
toe military hospital at Quincy, Illinois, on the 13th
instant. His disease was typhoid fever, contracted
while serving his country in Missouri. When the
war broke out, young Ashton suspended his news
paper at Dallas, locked up $2,000 of printing ma
teria], and was among the first to volunteer to sus
tain his country's flag. The last exploit in which
he was engaged was the capture of McAfee, the
rebel Speaker of the Missouri House of Representa
tives. The exertion of that night’s march brought
on the fever of which he died.
The vote at the recent election for brigadier
general of the Reserve Brigade stood as follows :
Colonel F. C. Patterson, 904. and Captain Peter
Fritz Ifil. The flection of staff officers of toe
Fourth Regiment resulted in the choice of W. 11.
Yeaton as colonel; B. F. Van Dyke, lieutenant
colonel: 2>. Rodney King, major of infantry bat
talion ; and E. D. Van Horn, major of Zouave bat
talion.
A Union meeting of the Philadelphia Home
Guards will be held thia evening, in the field ad
joining toe armory of the Mantua company. The
Guards will make a dress parade at five o’clock,
-and the meeting will organize at seven.
The Celebeatiox of the Seventeenth of
Sjepixmbeb.—The joint committee of Councils ap
pointed to maloe arrangements for a proper cele
bration of the 17th day of reassembled
on Saturday afternoon, when Professor Jackson
submitted a proposition for fireworks; Mr. King a
proposition for a balloon ascension; and a young
gentleman named Richardson was anxious to be al
lowed to recite Drake’s Ode to the American Flag,
•fie gave the committee a specimen of his talent at
recitation; but it was scarcely appreciated. None
of the&e propositions were snoepted.
General Pleasonton was present, and was called
•upon for a plan of the military display.
The General proposed to form the military on
twelfth street, right resting on Callowhill street,
and the route to be as follows: Up Callowhill
street to Fifteenth, down Fifteenth to Walnut
street dewn Walnut street to the house of Hon.
«eoTse M. Dallas, where the orator, the Mayor,
presidents of Councils, and invited gnests will be
received and escorted down Walnut street to
Third, up Third to Chestnut street, and to Inde
pendence Hall, where the distinguished party will
he left, while the military will resume the hne of
march up Chestnut street to Ninth, up Ninth to
Arch street, up Arch street to Twelfth, and thence
to Callowhill street, and there dismiss.
This plan occasioned some discussion as to tne
inability of the military to take part m the civic
portion of the exercises in the Square, as the pro
posed route carried the soldiers away from the
Spot, while a large portion of the Home.Guard*
desired to be present at the time of the delivery ol
finally decided that the programme sug
gested by General Pleasonton should be adopted,
tnd after the dismissal of the parade the indivi
dual members of the companies could use their
own pleasure in regard to attending at the Square.
It was decided to extend an invitation to appear
on the platform to Commodore Dupont, command
ant of Ihe Philadelphia Navy Yard, the ot
the army and navy in the city, Commodore Stew
art. Governor Curtin and Cabinet, the Judges ot
the Supreme Court of the United States, of toe Su
preme Court of Pennsylvania, and toe judges ot
the eitv courts. , _ . .
It was also resolved that Captain Dupont bo re
to bo
fired at noon from the Navy Yard.
Mayor Henry will preside on the occasion, sup
ported bv thirty-four vice presidents. The com

all the purchasers a luinilsnim.' and useful gift will bo
presented.
The Fast and the Present,—ln ancient
