    Daring Feat of a K^i-k-VTalkeu.—Oa
Saturday afternoon, Mr. J.-nu Denier, the rope
walker, accomplished a feat that completely
eclipsed all his previous purGnmnucus, in crossing
the Schuylkill river upon m tight-rope, with hi a
head enveloped in a sad !
The crowd that had assembled to

Mr. Denier effected the IrunsU with firm but
measured puce, while the gaping multitude held its
fcreath and strained its eyes to follow him.
Once, only once, he whs seen to stumble, and then
to tremble violently as though he were about to full,

• Death from Intempkh vacjs and Exposure.
—Yesterday morning, a woman named Mary Ann
Kay was found dead in a houso in Cumberland,
street, above Front, Nineteenth ward. The neigh
bors, when they became cognizant of the fact, at
once circulated the report that the woman had ha fen
foully dealt with. The coroner was informed, mid
proceeded to hold au inquest. Upon the arrival of
the coroner, a largo crowd, mostly females, congre
gated in front of the building, and serious flu ents
were made against a German who lived with the
deceased. lie was accused of murdering lire wo
man. Thfe «6?oncr’g jurv made a strict examina
tion, and were footi satisfied that the death of the
woman was caused by intemperance and exposure.
The body of the deceasnl lay in the second story
on the floor, with an old shawl thrown over it. The
bouse only contained a few chairs, a stove, and se
veral article!? oi* clothing.
Horrible Acoiden't. —Mrs. Margaret AYiiliSj
residing at No. 327 German street, while attempt
ing to fill a fluid lamp, on Friday night, while the
wick was still ignited, fire was accidentally com
municated to" the can which she hold in her hand.
This latter burst, as did the lamp, scalding her face
ana bosom in a shocking manner, and setting fire
1q hor olcrtbto" and the articles in the room. Mrs,
*lVxlli3 junsptd oul of the window in hope of being
rescued from the flames, but the current of uir
caused by this act only added to the fury of the
devouring element. Mrs. Willis was burned almost
to a crisp, and so seriously injured that her family
physician onieit*£»s no hope of her recovery what
ever.
Two Mvt.es lviiJ/ED.—As one of Adams’
Express cars. No. 67. was proceeding down Broad
Street, below Carpenter, towards the Baltimore de
pot on Saturday, the chain which attaches the ears
to the line of mules. caught under the front wheels
of tlio car, dragging two mules under the Wheels,
tilling thorn instantly, and throwing the car off the
track. The mules were owned by Mr. Joseph
Kime, who has the contract for hauling Adams’ Ex
press cars to the depot. The animals were valued
at *4OO.
Sncxur.—A woman named Rebecca La
tham, aged Jr yenr3. committed suicide on Satur
day night, at her residence ia Front street, ahoTB
.Harris, by Inking n quantity of liuuhajuni. Tbo
deceased was an intemperate creature, and had
•often threatened to commit suicide. She leaves
two children. An inquest was held by the coroner.
Hat Market. —There has been more hay
-5n the market during tho past week than for several
former ODCS. The prices remain unchanged since
Tnst quotation*. hOO loads having been sold at from
50 to GO cents per cwt. for the new crop, and from
VO to 80 cenls fur the old. One hundred loads of
Straw Sold at from 50 to GO cents per ewt.

Rifled Gannon fob Philadelphia. A
Eplendid rifled cannon, for presentation to the City
of Philadelphia, has been purchased in by
Dir. James McHenry, formerly of this city, and
BOW residing ill London. The cannon is*of the
Whitworth p?ittorn, breech-loading. The cannon
is now in Now York, and will reach Philadelphia
to-day. 1
Recovered. —The body of Washington
<Jaines, colored, who fell overboard at Lombard
street wfcarf n;fsw days since from the sloop Great
Trttfrw.-WHO Te?ovcrcd on Saturday night. The
coroner held an inquest.
Troops Passing Through. —It may be in
teresting to sonic persons in this city, who cannot
i>e made to.believe that no soldiers are forthcom
ing, that nearly 4,000 soldiers passed thv uugh on
Saturday southward. This is on but one road.
Arrested. —Three boys, named George,
Francis, anil Thomas Kelley, were arrested yester
day Afternoon on the charge of bathing in front of
Fairmount Park, and taken to the station-house to
await a hearing.
Captain Collis’ Zouaves d’Afrique pro
ceeded to Fort’-Delaware yesterday, for ten days’
drill, after which they will proceed to General
Bonks, and join hie column,

Saturday morning, destined for the army under

evidence against him -was the discovery, in his pos
session, some time ago. by the United States Mar
shal, 01 a large amount of counterfeit gold and
silver coin, in various stages of preparation; some
of the gold coin had been completely finished, hut
the far greater portion was in an unfinished state.
'{There was no evidence of any passing hy the de
fendant, and the jury were instructed that on the
counts charging that offence a verdict of not guilty
-jnust be rendered.
As to tho offence of making, they were told that
>ihe offence was complete, if, in tbeir belief, the de
fendant was engaged in making or assisting in any
in the mailing, or in the transportation of the

an investment, on tho strength of its earnings when
it bad comparatively** monopoly *»f tho carrying
burinocs, now parcelled out among five or six rivals.
The Galena road was finished iu 1855. at a* cost of
nearly eight and a half millions. That year it
earned $1,252,042 not. and divided 22 per cent,
among Us stockholders. It bus never done so well
since. The steady, progressive decline in its earn
ings from the very hour of its completion is shown
in the following table ;

It is thus shown that the net earnings of tho
Galena fell 50 per cent. in the five years which en
sued after it was first completed; and this, notwith
standing tho steady increase of population in the
country through which it runs, and tho economies
which experience and the decline in the cost of
labor have brought about in the cost of running the
road In the past five years.
The stockholders in the Vermont Valley Railroad
received their annual dividend on Wednesday last,
in the 6hape of a free ride over the road, from Brat
tlcboro to Bellows Fulls, which Is all they get for
their investment:

PRINCIPAL RENDEZVOUS, 833 MARKET Street.
This Regiment offers to active young men who desire
at once to go to duty peculiar advantages. The muster
ing will be by companies. The orders from the War De
partment have already been roccired to supply each com
pany, as soon as mustered, with uniform, arms and
equipments, subsistence, and horses, horse equipments
and forage, and at onco go into camp near tills City for
practice and drill during the formation of the Regiment.
The pay is ns follows per month: Sergeant Major, 523;
Quartermaster Sergeant, 523; Chief Bugler, $23; First
Sergeant, $22; Sergeant, 19; Corporal, $l6; Bugler,
$l5; Furrier and Blacksmith, $l7; Private, $l4.
t The arms will be simply the Sabre and large-sized Re
volver.
The uniform will be Dark-Blue Jacket and Cap, and
Sky-Blue Pants, all truiuned with Yellow Braid.
the Colonel, RICHARD HENRY RUSH, is a West
Point graduate, and an experienced army officer. All
the other officers are,without exception, selected for their
known fitness for their positions.
Young men between the ages of 18 and 28, able-bodied,
of light build, and over 5 feet 6 inches high, who wish to
