Oa Saturday, Jelly 0. we saw a sail A bend, early in the morning We were then In latitude 88 deg 45 min. N , lorigttude 09 deg 20 m in W. Between seven and eight o'olook A AI. we made the mil to be a brig, standing to' the southward under whole sail At this time the wind was light from the W. 5. W., and we were steering E. by N , with studding Salle set. At 8k the privateer taoked and stood N. W., at the same time setting a French ensign, and from the foot of be: having Frenott-out hempen sails we supposed N u wee a Prenoh merchant brig. In answer to his °more we set the stars and stripes, and thought no more of the stranger At i o'olook, to our stir prise, the fired a shot lames our bows, when we ',us in the studding nails and hove the John rbli. to. We then supposed her Co be a French men of war brig ; but her ports were closed and the guts covered up, while bat few men were to be seen on her decks. She oame within musket shot of us, and lowered a boat, which was mantled by eight seamen, and contained Lieutenant Poetell,• late of the United States navy. Just before the boat name alongside the Freneh gag was hulled down, and the Confederate flag run up. In about two minutes afterward the armed Greer was on oar desk After irguiring after my health, Lieutenant Postell desired me to show him the brig's papers. I 'invited him into the cabin, mud, After showing them, I stated the outgo was. Spanish property. Said he, " You are oar prize, and the Spaniards had no business to ship their eargoes in American bottoms " He then canto on deok and ordered four of my men to go in the privateer's boat, and told the remainder of the orew,to peek up their things and stand by, to do as ordered. They immediatelylet to work and broke out the ship's stores, and 'took about eight months' provisions on board of the privateer, leaving only enough to take the prize crew beak with the vessel. This occupied about five boors. I was transferred with the remainder of my crew on board of the privateer, and they took my boat and milt theirs on board of the Joie Weish, as mine was the beet. A prize orew, corresponding In appearance and number, was then put on board, le charge of piles coaster Stephens, and she was ordered to go south, bat I was not allowed to know of her destination. I think they will palm themselves off as the genuine crew, if they fell in with the Federal cruisers. Afteetbiwork of transferring the stores had been eompleted, Ciptein Comm tta mustered all hinds aft and said to them : "Boys, if you molest the crew of that brig or their things to the value of a rope yarn, I will punish yen'to the utmost of my power. 'Do you understand? It was pleasant to dine"on board a pirate cif our own stores. After dinner a sail was made oat from aloft where two men were kept stationed night and day. She proved to be the schooner Enchantress, Capt. Deveravx, from Boston, bound to St. Jags. The same'meezeuvree se had been practised upon um were gone through with, with the exception that the negro nook was left on board, and a Mr. Smith, formerly a Savannah pilot, was put on board is priza, master. The vessel then beaded south. At night I was furnished with New York papere of the 21 of July to peruse They had been taken from a passing venal.' Oa Sunday, 7th et. July, we had prayers In the morning, and at noon captured the schooner .5' J {Varying, of Brookhaven, trbith a valuable cargo on board, bound to Monte. video. :Two of the crew, the cook and foe paseen ger, were left on board, and a itharleaton pilot (I have forgotten the name) gent off as prize master, destination unknown. The pirates took from hor four casks of fresh water. As she drew eighteen feet of water, and was, of coarse, useless to the privateer, she wee allowed to go. We bad now twenty-oneprisoners—almost too many to have on mob vessel—and they concluded to put twelve of us on the Goaded/ Just es the boat boarded this vessel five of her orew joined the priveteer, and said that it was their intention to have taken the ship that night, and that they were heavily armed. Thu proved to be true, for a large quantity of pis- tols and bowie-knives were found on their persona. While the ship was being overhauled, the brig Mary E. Thompson came running down and was made a prize.. When we lett they Intruded to put a prize crew on board of her. (She was rebee quantly released, and is now in Newport, R. L-••• ED.
