LOSS UPWARDS OF 8750,000.
From the Attila and Bee, of Eratardan
The anniversary of our National Independence
will be remembered as a day of destructive oonfla
grations in Boston. Oar city, as) will be seen be
low, was visited by two fires, one of which eon
rimed a vast amount of property, estimated by
some as high as $750,000, and by others at $1,000.-
000. The former sum, bewever, will probably
prove the nearest correct, when all the facts shall
have been gathered.
The first of which we shall give an account took
pleas) at East Boston. It broke out about a quar
ter before 2 P. M., according to the best means
we have of obtaining, for accounts differ, in Rod-
Rey's rigging loft, on Aipinwall's wharf, and is
supposed to have originated by the firing of an
India cracker The betiding was of wood, and
the flames were so far advanced when discovered
that they could not be ezthiguished. The build
ing was occupied by S. H. & A. Whidden, ship
wrights and caulkers, whose lons is $4 500. Mr.
Rodney's lose le $1,200. Samuel Aspinwall lost a
quantity of spars in the dock valued at $500; and
Nathaniel Goddard $250 worth of coal. The
wharf was entirely consumed.
The next wharf swept by the flames was owned
by the bustling heirs, and cootipied by Dolliver
A bleeper, and Crean & Jordan, Snelling, Mat
thews & Alexander, ship wrights, and Thomas
Vallely, boat-builder. Mr. V.'s loss Is $l,OOO, on
which there was $9OO insurance. Messrs. Snelling
A Oa. estimate their loss at $0,000; insurance
. 31.500. Mtwara. Dolliver A Sleeper's loss is about
$1 800. Adjoining the wharf, and running to New
sweet, was a two story brick building, owned by
Mr. is,elmets, and occupied by Clark A Co., salt
miumfaa icepp, whose loss Is about $l5 000. They
are !neared fo . :" $ 3 500 in the New England, and
$2.000 in the hisillsOlorer'S 0111ces.
The extension seet;:lial dock and railway of the
East Boston Dry-Dock C4. 4 okeloY, and a very large
wooden building on their w..ttri; occupied for rig
ging lofts end other purposes O . :sin:tooted with the
repairing of ships, was totally de. 4l o,yed. The
loss is probably about $lOO,OOO.
The ere by this time bad got an altogether an-
manageable headway. Alter consuming severs
small buildings, chiefly dwelling bowies, occupied
by David Keefe, James Beckley, Martin Corrigan,
John Kelly, Benjamin Brit:timer, and Martin Cul
it extended to the extensive salt manufac
tory of Baker A Downes, ell Nickerson's wharf,
whioh was totally destroyed. The building was of
brick, four stories in height. Another large struc
ture used by Mr. N. as a packing house for pack
ing fish, wee likewise destroyed. The loss in this
locality was not less than $lOO . OOO.
• The extensive establishment of the East Boston
Iron Foundry next fell before the engulphiog ele
ment. The lose is full $30,000. Among the arti•
ales consumed in the foundry was a lot of patterns
belonging to Moses Pond A Co., stove dealers,
Blackstone street. The loss on these is insured for
'51,200 in the Merchant's Insurance Company, and
is about $8 000. There were also castings finished
and packed and ready for shipment to Africa and
to Tennessee in the building. Geo. T. McLaughlin,
