A Perilous Adventure at Niagara Falls.
fns "MAID OP TER MIST" GORS THROUGH THE
RAPIDS AND THS WHIRLPOOL.
From the Rochester Union of Frau./
Yesterday afternoon one of the Meta phfilettl
voyaged ever chronicled was made by the little
gamer .Morel of the IlZrst, in which so mazy
plessumseekers have, in times past, voyaged to
the face, of the immense sheet of water which con
fittitea the famous Falls of Niagara. It appes.ra
that the boat has never been paying property, and
bar owner has incurred some indebtedness which
was about to result in her seizure To avoid this
sstestrophe she was yesterday taken down the
river through the - rapids and the whirlpool, and
arrived safely at Lewiston The daring navigator
who socomplubied this hitherto-supposed-to-be im
possible feat was none other than Robinson, the
man who has so often rendered himself oonspicu
one by his intrepidity in saving life and property
endangered by proximity to the great cataract.
The Mold of the Attu got up steam about half
past three o'clock, and shoved out into the stream
from her landing. She bad on board only three
persons—Robinson and one other man at the
wheel, and the third below, to let as fireman and
engineer. The beat ran up stream a short die.
!Me, as if to gat a good start, and then
her prow was pointed with the swift current,
and away she want—the few spectators On
shore holding their breath with suspense Row
the adventurers on board felt, we have no
means of knowing. As she entered the rapids
every eye was strained, and as the gallant little
otaft surmounted billow after billow, under the
skilful guidance of her pilot, and pe.ssed
each ordeal in safety, the utmost enthusiasm
was manifested. At one point, however, a thrill
of horror streak the hearts of the watehere, for the
Maid of
_the /Wet appeared to have capsized
Tie surprise was only for an instant, however, for
tie immediately righted with the loss of her
made meek. and passed on, otherwise unharmed.
To run the whirlpool, then , ithezardons, was still
less hazardous exploit, ~
the passage or the
Rapids, but she dad at without trouble, and those
who beheld the boat emerging into comparatively
still water, drew a long sigh of relief.
It war a terrible ordeal, as it has long been
taken lot granted that no craft as email as that
could live a moment in the seething cauldron of
the Rapids, or escape from the whirlpool atter
entering its chubs. No other craft, either large or
stoma nes sear attempted to perform the trip.
The &raid of the Mist will never again be seen
in the theatre of her past history. To ascend the
Rapid, is a physical impossibility for a steamer of
any power. Robinson has been for many years
ambitious to male the trip, and once offered to
do it in a skill, but could find no one to encourage
the undertaking.

the initiation of an important movement in New

Gonaiderable interest attaches idle now to tie
question—can the fibre of flax be substituted for
omen ? A resolution was offered on Thursday in
the Chamber of Commerce that a committee of the
Chamber report OD the advisability of discovering
if it be practicable ; but after soma little debate
tuition was postponed upon it. The inquiry is one
of some interest, however, and we doubt not it will
sooner or later engage the attention of the Clam
ber. It is claimed that by the aid of chemistry
and mechanical skill it 11 rendered quite certain
that that substitute, to a great extent, is within
aontrol, and that the flax •llbre has been success
kite eottonised at a cost below the cost of cotton,
ailed and spun into yarn by the ordinary cotton
machinery, and woven into a variety cf fabrics.
It is likewise stated it can be produced cheaper
that the cotton of the South, and that it can be
gathered by the reaping machine as cheaply as
