The Mobile vendors of vegetables last week de
termined upon presenting the army at Pensacola
with a variety of their " luxuries of the season,"
and in a few hours collected together one hundred
and tau oart-loads of the tempting produsts of the
Alabama vegetable markets. A Gorman market
man, named Nicholas Grossman, for refusing to
oontribote to the offering and intimating that for
anotker cause he gave his share, was set upon by
a market woman, and roughly assaulted. lie was
at last rescued by the police.

that a large crowd assembled at the depot of the
Virginia and Tennessee Railroad in that city, on

who have left their distant homes to defend our

that there are not less than sixty thousand men,

Col. T. T. Fauntletoy, who recently resigned a
position in the army of the 'United States, has been
appointed brigadier general in the regular army
of -Virginia.

mond for the interior. Colonel Rershaw's com
mand, Second Regiment South Carolina volun

The Winchester Republican, of the 24th,
(Friday,) contains the following item
General J. E. Johnston, of Virginia, and Colonel
J. S. Preston, of South Carolina, parsed through
our city yesterday on their way to Harner's Ferry.
Genera! Johnston has lately been appointed briga
dier general in the Confederate States army, and
has been ordered to take command at the Ferry.
Colonel Preston will eat as his aid. General Jack
son, who has had command of the army in this
section of the State for the last month, will proba
bly take command of one of the divisions under
General Johnston.
