TES Lome Motmens' AND WIDOWS' BELIEF
FUND. - -We adverted, the other day, to the proposi
tion of that admirable comedienne, Miss Annie
Lonedale, to establish the ravaleus of a fund for the
above benevolent pttrpose—one which appeals to
the nearest and dearest sympathies of all. We
are highly gratified in being able to state dad her
efforts bid fair to be crowned with unqualified sue
oess. The executive committee of the Academy
of Marto have, in the handsomest manner and
moat favorable terms, granted her the use of
their house ter a grand dramatic and musical
matinee on Thursday next, when she will
have the aid of a host of leading artists. Her
desire is that the entire proceeds, without deduo
don of the moat trivial kind, shall be devoted to
this fund, and we believe she will be able to carry
out her intentions, with the assistance of the power
ful committee by whom she is backed in her bene
volent endeavors, and her own Indomitable energy.
Who will refuse their aid, in peraon or in pocket,
for such a purpose? The full particulars will bo
nuanced as speedily as they are completed.
The Richmond Speech of Hon. A. H.
Stephens.
!For The Press.)
A. 11. Siophene, Vice President of the so-called
Confederated States, is in Richmond, Virginia.
On Monday evening last he addressed the people of
that city. His fundamental proposition is, that
the Constitution of the United States was first vio
lated by the North. We beg to remind Mr. Ste
phens that this is directly in the face of the senti
ments of hie celebrated Union speech, in November
last. The position then taken was, that no cause
of revolution bad been given by the North. Both
positions cannot bo right, and plain men are con
founded at the morel obliquity exhibited by so
sudden, ao uncooked-for, a change of sentiment.
The truth of November last is truth still, and there
is reason to fear that it will be affirmed by a
bloody, though a decisive, verdict of the American
People.
Mr. Stephens says, in allusion to the cal: of Mr.
Lincoln for seventy-Ave thousand volunteers, that
" he could fled no authority in the old Constitution
for such a flagrant abuse of rower ;" and this from
a man occooying, the socor.d official position of a
sweated Confederacy, which owes its existence
avowedly to revolutioaery principles merely. Out
upon such unblushing impudence ! Mr. Stephens,
he who now writes this was once your political ad
mirer and friend. Ile now denounces you as a
doubly-dyed traitor. You, ssr, delzberated upon
traswon; others, loos intelligent, were betrayed
into it. The latter will be treated as erring fel
low-citizens always should ; you, sir, shall meet a
traitor's doom, if there is any virtue left in the
American people. Speaking again of Mr. Lincoln,
he Says: "You (Citizens of Virginia) are, however,
no longer under the rule of thts tyrant."
Note the language, citizens of the North. The
President of the United States, after exhibiting a
forbearance unexampled in the history of nations,
is denounced by this would-bo Vioe President of a
Confederated tyranny, as a tyrant. What com
promise can there be with men of this stamp' OEO
oely—such a compromise as is due to outraged
Liberty, to defied and insulted humanity. Such a
compromise merely es the statutes define as a
Penalty for treason. Pub on the columns. Let
the answer be to thia wholesale and conspicuous
hinderer, the heration of Cannon, the rattling
Call of musket balls, the unflinching determination
of the people to preserve the Union intact, and
crush out an opposition to it, South and North.

JKPF. DAVIS IN TOWN —We were told this morn
ing that Jeff Davis was in town, and that he had come
here uteog. for the purpose of reconnoitring. Our in
formant was of opinion that Jeff: was going to fortify
Fairmount with the aid of Secession troops, thrown up
along the line of the Baltimore Railroad, and tnen
erect a oast-iron and cotton-bale battery on Smith's
Island. We immediately despatched a number of re
porters to make inquiry as to the startling report, and
they have returned with the information that the sup
posed Jeff. was simply a very worthy gentleman, who
had the misfortune to resemble the arch traitor, and
who came hither to procure a new Milt at the Brown
Stone Clothing Rail of Rockhad & Wilson, Nos. 603
and COS Chestnut Street, above Sixth.

was received from the Smith. : Aihpfedaiihnisertstun

patch, as a matter of worse. nuzzled the minds of the
operators, and the watchmen placed there by the au
thorities, fearing some treachery, forbid it leaving the
office. The mystery was finally solved, when it was
&wavered that the true meaning of the despatch could
be obtained by reading it backwards. when it stands as
follows: •'Buy your clothes of Granville stokes, 600
Chestnut street, Philadelphia." Upon the despatch
being so satisfactorily explained it was allowed to leave
the ethos. At this fashionable clothing depot we are
requested to state that a handsome gift accompanist'
