DISAPPEARANCE OF AN OFFICER AT THE.
SOT YARD.—Sergeant Pearson, of the 11. S
merino garrison, at the Navy Yard, disappeared
011 Monday night under very singular eireum
games. He bad been on guard duty during the
day at the gate, and, at lo o'clock i" M., the cap
min of a merchant vessel, under charter by the
Government for the purpose of carrying iron ooal-
Liehters to the coast of Africa, sought admission to
the yard for the purpose of going on board his
Ail). Not having the countersign by whledi to
pas' the different sentinels, the sergeant accom
panied him down. The ship lies at what is called
:he South wharf. At the head of this wharf, which
j 5 Num hundred feet long, a sentinel is posted.
The captain and sergeant peened this sentinel going
down, bat this was the last seen of the sergeant .
When os duty, Sergeant Pearson was known as a
steady and faithful soldier. He has serval the
itaernment upwards of fifteen yearson shipboard.
Ile is said to have bad on his person at the time of
hie strange disappearance some $5O In silver, and
s silver watch. Supposing he had fallen overboard,
:bs river at the wharf was dragged, on Tuesday,
hat without finding him.
A BURGLAR DISCOTZRZD.—Ei thief sneaked
isto the residence of Mr 'Robert McCulloch, at
No. 13:39 South Fourth street, on Tuesday evening,
eta making his way to the third story, secreted
himself under a bed, the sleeping apartment of
one of Mr. C.'s daughters. Shortly before 11
o'clock the lady went up stairs to retire, when by
Wee means or other she trod upon the rascal's
band. She at once cried out, when the reseal
made a thrust at her with a knife, inflicting a se•
were gash a short distance above her ankle. lie
then jumped from hie place of concealment and
started to ran down stairs. The daughter rushed
to the door to alarm the household, when the rel•
cal again turned and etruok her a violent blew on
the neck, nearly knocking her down. lie then
made his way down stairs as far as the second
story, but seeing a light on the first floor, he ran
Into the bath•roura, jumped from the window into
the yard, and made Ma escape.
FLAG RAisinGS.—On Tuesday afternoon the
employees of Jenks A. Son, at Brideaburg, flung to
the breeze the emblem of our country. The scene
at the raising was an impressive ono. Here were
the sturdy sons of labor, inst as they had left their
benches and their fires, watching the stirs and
stripes as they unfurls t to the breeze, and the
shoat that arose from every throat seemed like the
death-kr.cll of treason. After the flag had been
raised, the " Star-Spangled Banner" was sung by
the entire company, and an address, written by
Ms. E H. Jenks : was delivered by one of the gen
tlemen in his employ. The emblem of our ennu•
try's glory, which now floats over the machine
wok., at Bridesburg, was the gift of tho firm of
Alfred Jenks A; Son.
Today a very large and handsome flag will be
raised at the Second-distriet station-hones.

Bests GUARD Conrs.—A meeting of citi
tens
favorable to the formation of a military com
pany with the above tide, will be held at Saranak
Ball, Eighth and Callowhill street, this evening,
at S o'clock. The otjeot of this organisation is to
give to nob persons as are exempt from military
duty. as well as those wbo are to situated that they
cannot leave their homes, an opportunity of ren
dering their country same serviee. The city
will
need protection In the absence of the volunteer
troops, and this and other similar corps will at
tend to that duty. If in the course of the fearful
struggle before us their services will be needed in
the field, they will hold themselves ready to re
spond to the summons.

Mantua, and Fairmount Passsnger Railroad Com
pany, held the 9th instant, the following-named

tective Levy arrived here from New York, having

The prisoner was locked up for a hearing.

held an inquest on the body of a man, named
James Mat, who died at the Almshouse rom the
'feats of injuries received by being beaten s
night er two since, in the Twenty-fourth ward.
The decearod was too badly injured to tell by
whom or how he was beaten.
An inquest was also held yesterday on the body
of Jacob Rill, who died suddenly at a house in
Montgomery avenue, near Belgrade street.

the influence of liquor, jumped from the second
