PIIITY AND PATRIOTISM. —On Sunday
evening, while the regular annual collection in
aid of the fonds of the missionary society of the
Methodist Episcopal Church was being taken up,
at the Green-street hi. E. Church a gentleman
arose in the gallery, and after speaking of the pro
per association of piety and patriotlem, he stated
that the members of the choir contributed twenty
dame for the purpose of making the gallant Major
Anderson life member of the missionary aoolety.
This announcement caused a sensation which had
not !subsided when the lame gentleman again arose
and stated that the ladies of the choir desired to
contribute twenty dollars to make Mrs. Major An
derson a member of the society. lie afterwards
stated that the choir would give a like amount to
make Lieutenant-Generai Winfield Scott a life
member, and subsequently he said that as Mr.
Buchanan bad lately given evidence of a diaposi
tion to do hie deity to the Constitution and the
Union, they would also contribute the amount
necessary to create hint a life member.
The feeling thee started in the choir now eXtend•
ed to the body of the churoh: One lady began a
!subscription to make Governor Bloke, of Mary
! land, a life member, another contribution towards

two of the inmates are sinks and there is one eppli

MURDEROUS ASSAULT.—About 6 o'clock
last evening the driver of e teats of horses, named
Cartwright, *bile obstructing the railway treok
at Nineteenth and Cherry etroete, was remon
