Bev. W:Anderson read the °lnsular letter, -
advomlting great individual zeal for the Baptist
Church, and the eduoation of the youth in the fear
of the Lord according to Baptist tenets. 'There were
one million children in this mutat) , whose spirit
ual lest:motion was found in the Baptist denomi
nation.' Christian union-.a - theme much agitated
of late—would exert a neglect of faithful denomi
national training The estaystrongly advocated a
stviotly Baptist tuition, and was averse toe soft
ening of denominational tone. No thaixotio era
sadearis affirmed; however; for the support of pro
salter 'laws. While brotherly feeling should be
ineouramed, there should he. no lowering of the
banner, and no cowardice in the utterance
of truth.
. A discussion ensued, in which the author's view
Was alternately sustained" and. rebuked. The
genet - al sentiment seemed to be that Christian
Union" was' intended to weaken the Baptist
strength.
Dr. Brown, of Germantown, eulogised the letter.
it should be read at every Baptist hearth.
Bev. W. Randolph was glad that the substance
of the letter adverted to emanative Baptist tuition;
soak 'lay at the root of the denomination's pro
opacity. Many Sunday-school books in Baptist
libraries 'advocate sentiments antagonistic to the
Baptists indite true teachings of the New Testa
ment. -
Rev. W. Watkinton thought that the letter In

lie opposed denominationalism. They were doing
the*. children injaattee in teaching , only Baptist
dogmas Christ. and Christ only, should be taught
to the - young. Minor doctrines. had no bearing
upon the soul's satiation.
Dr Winter thought that Christian Union was an
instrument to stab the Baptists. Religious prin.
-410 es should- not be compromised. Baptism they
.loved mote than Union. ' •
- Rev.R. Jeffrey thought that Baptist children
leers allowed too mtteh lib,,rty in religious opinion.
If aentimento'were - valuoluss they should not be
contended for. The weak point of the denomina
lion was that it labored for no distinctive grind
pies. Rev: J. Wheaton Smith advocated the same
sentiments in connection with a proper degree of
the Union spirit. One who could not worship with
brethren of other denominations should pray God
to take the bigotry from his haunt. The Union he
had advocated in the noontide ho was not afraid to
advoonte elsewhere.
Rev. Lie• Kennard hoped the discussion would
stop. ft had been improper and wrong Other
points of the letter, lam assailable, had been diere
girded.
Bev. Mr-Jeffrey reed en extract froth a denomi
national paper, showing that the converts through
the Union meetings had not joined the Baptists In
numbers corresponding to the accessions to other
churches. A gentleman replied that the churches
prominent in the Union movement had been abun•
dating blessed, and that the Baptist do:den/ion was
owing to their exelusivenews,
The author of therearay denied the construction
placed upon his letter by Mr. Watkinson, after
which Cathoart made a strong antiunion
address. -Let the'old•faebtoned, exclusive Baptist
prayer meetings be restored. There was less divi
' don among Christians when they kept themselves
reserved. He hoped that a fence would be built
between the denominations, and that no hand
should remove a single rail.
The may was ordered to be printed.
The next anniversary meeting will be held in
Mew Market street, above Poplar, in the Rev. Mr.
Ciitheart's church. Rev. Geo. Higgins will deliver
the introductory eermon. Rev. Mr. Cathcart al
