to was born, literally in a hut, still stand- -
•itig, near Tring, In Hertfordshire, an humble
stone building, wltlithe roof so low that a
man cannot stand 'upright in it. This was
some thirty-tiro years ago. His parents were
wholly illiterate. His ihther earned only two
dollars and a half a week, ars a canal boat
man, and was not always in work. The chit
.tiren werfrearly sent to labor in an adjacent
silk mill, sometimes getting casual Instruction
in A penny school. Gerald Massey'Aown earn
lugs ranged from eighteen to thirty cents a
week% But the mill was burned down, and
then the little ones had to earn their little
dole by plaiting straw for bonnets. They knew
no childhood, in this difficult struggle for ex
istence. But amid all this toil; Gerald Ltas
seyi learned to read—thanks to his mother's
ambition• for him. Books were scarce—the

1800.
, At the' go of fifteen, the, lad went to Lon
don, still earning his, bread by labor, as an
errand -boy, and reading whatever • he could
lay hands upon. Reading gradually brought
the y desire to write, but the disposition to
lobetry,t. ven as a reader, did not come until
lho;ladfell in love. When utterly hopeless,
he l irrote his first verses—upon Hope t Gra
dually, his rhymes wore published in country
'newspapers. At last, aided by subscriptions
among those.wlao know him at Tring, ho pub:

the coming' ilityri,'of a better' day for them, he
started a weekly, journal called "The ,Spirit of
Freedom,". and during the year it was pub-
Batumi, wrote half of its contents with his own
hand. After this came another Volume, et:l

Brea fremediately acknowledged. It has gone
through numerous editions. In 1857,..liassey's

Ticknor & Fields, the eminent and discrimi
nating Boston publishers.
Gerald Massey's merits as a poet have been
warmly acknowledged by the Edinetirgh and
gear/ray Reviews, in England,-by the Times
snail eStarktrood's Magazine, and even the
4thistram; that wet-blanket of literature,
'which rarely praises a writer until he is world
famous, aotutdfy hailed him as a true post. In
thiseountry bla, reputation IS very high. His
proper mace Is between Burns and. Tennyson,

BRANTWOOD, 001410.011, Like Country, May, 1860.
This new edition will appear in a few days.
In anticipation, we quote a few of the new
poems.
Much has been written about Burns, but
rarely has any tribute possease& snob a mix
ture of truth and fancy, simplicity aitd grace,
as the following:
ROBERT BURNS.
Of all the birds the robin he
I. darling of the gentle poor:
Hie nest re sacred, he goes free
By window or by door:
His lot Is lowly, and his wings
Are only of tho homely brown,
Brain the rainy day be lungs
When gayer Inends have flown.
And hoarded up for us he brings,
In that brave breast of bonny red,
A gathered glory of the Syringe
And Enamors long, long fled.
Even so all birds of eong abOve,
To which the poor man smiling turns,
The darling of his listening love
Is gentle Robin Burns:
His summer soul our winter %MUM
He makes u glory in our gloom;
His nett is safe from all the storms.
For ever in our home.
Yes, there is such a human glow
Of life and love in Robin's breast,
Its warmth can melt the winter snow
In poverty's void nest.
Much of what Gerald Massey has written is
entitled to range under the head of Poetry of'
the Affections. .6 The Ballad of Babe Chrlsta
bel belongs to this class. It describes the
birth, tho mental development, and the death
of a beloved child. The birth :
And when the Morn with frolic nut
Lookt through the curtains of the night,
!there was a dearer dawn of light,
if, tenderer life the mother prima!
Al:! bliss to make the brain reel wild
The Star new-kindled in the dark— .
Life that had flattered like a lark—
' Lay in her bosom a sweet Child !-
now had she felt it drawing down
Her nesting heart more vim, and close—
}ter rose-bud ripening to a Rose,
That she should one day leo full-Mewls
How had she throbbed with hopes and fears,
And strained her inner or es till dim,
To see the coming glory swim
Through the doh mist er happy tears;
Foe it her woman's heart drank up
And smiled at Sorrow's darkeit dole: .
And now Delight's most dainty soul
Was erusht for her in one rich oust!
And then delielows languor' °rent,
Like nectar. on her nain'it hot dronth,
And feeling fingers—kletillit mouth" -
Being feint with Joy, the Mother slept.
Then, how exquisitely beautiful the descrip
tion of the Babe's mental growth, oven while
Decay had commenced its inroads upon its
delicate frame
' A spirit-look was in her rage. .
. That shadoweda miraculous range
Of meanings ' ever noh and strange.
(Jr lightened glory in the slam,.
, Snob motto lore was in her eyes,
And light of other world; than ours,
She lookt as she had red on flowers,
And drunk the dews of Paradise.
Lastly, the death scene, po delicately limned,
ifirr words describing it, just as, with a few

Their claims have been inveaUgated and ap.
proved by Senator Douglas—sae his report from
the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the Senate;
by Mr. Ritchie, of your State, for the House Com
mittee ; by Mr. Marcy, the present State Depart

Paraguay at the , time, especially Captain Page,
has concurred in these judgments. The feeble
old man Johnson has been practised upon to render
a different judgment, when the question was not re
ferred to him, but only the amount. The cause
throughout, on our side, bee been conducted with
judicial purity and rectitude.
In a few dap we shall review Mr.Joirnaon's opi
