The Late Meteor.
The meteor of Monday evening, a notice of
which was published from one of our correspondents
yesterday, seems to have been witnessed in other
portions *Utile State antloountry.
TII UNTICOR IN DANVILLS.
A correspondent sends us the following: .
DANVILLE, Montgomery co., Pa., August 7
To THE EDITOR OF THE ERRSB : Last evening,
at quarter before eight o'clock, before the light of
day had fully faded, or theaters had become visible,
a brilliant meteor passed over Danville. It was
moving in a northwest direction, and seemed very
high. When a little west of this place (without
any noise being beard) it burst, or threw off several
large portions, which continued following the prin
cipal body. Quite a large train of a blu ish white
flame, which terminated in a sharp point, followed
this meteor, and- the nucleus, or head, was con
stantly throwintelf, in all directions, bright and
beautiful sparks. The marked feature of this
Meteor is t h at, notwithitanding it threw off several
portions nearly as large as itself, there was no ap
parent diminution of the also of the principal
body ';
- moreover, it did not seem to tall behind the
hills,- but continued on its course until lost in the
brigh-trod glow that illumines the western heavens
this time in the evening. It was perfectly calm,
not a led moving on the trees ; only two small
porticies of aloud in sight, and they not in the line
or course in which this body was moving. It was
in sight about forty seconds W. B.
The following accounts are also Published in the

TUNGSTEN STEEL.—ThiSTISCIG ) hags the
Lc Technologiste, has hitherto yielded rather un- .
satiafactory results when converted into tools.
But, au:lording to Appelbaum and Kongsberg, the,
oause of this lies in the ignorance of the workmen
as to tho degree of heat at which it should be
tempered. Exact experiments show that to temper
Tungsten steel a higher - temperature is necessary
than is used for English cantosteel, the proper
range being from a bright red to a white heat,
The process requires a mixture of five parts of
powdered yellow rosin, three parts of *hale oil,
and two parts of tallow. NO tbls the steel is
plunged at a dull red heat, , Afterwards it is
brought io a bright red, almost white, and temper
ed in the usual. way in cold water to 15 e. As this
hind of steel is harder, as well as more easily
welded, than English stool, it is better adapted for
numerous purposes in the useful arts.
TYLLIAN Punrmr.-11. Theo, or Venice,
states that after protracted researches he hes suc
ceeded in discovering the long; forgotten pitiple dye
which was so remota in the Beet. Pliny dietin•
plebes two tints, one violet, and the other red.
The former is derived from the Murex Truncultts,
which at ,p resent is very rarely found in the
i
'Adriatic; the latter, which s the true Tyrian pur
ple, is furnished by , the .111totx Brandonis. An
imporbint Mot ienoted by this venerable naterallpt,
namely, that the coloring material derived from
the murex le purple when first secreted, while the
inferior kind yielded by some other species is ori
ginally colorless, and only assumes its purple hue
on exposure to tote air.
COMPOSITION OF ATMOSPHERIC AlR.—Recent
investigations have shown that, notwithstanding the
effeota produced by vegetation, eolubustio ,n respira
tion, upon the nittogeh, oxygen, and carbonie acid,
of which the nit is cow poaed, yet a beautiful compen
sating operation is over operative in the groat la
boratory of nature, by which usually the propor
tions of Abeseeeenstituents ate preserved froin any
considerable variations. The eiperiments of Bun
son, Reynault, Lacey, Miller, and others, show,
however, that the composition of the atmosphere
does Undergo some slight fluctuations, which are
confined within very narrow limits, and are seldom
met with except in very elevated positions._
PRESERVATION OF SODIUM' AND POTASSION:—:-*
These two pconliar metals, since their diecovery in
1507 by Sir H. Davy, have become of considerable
importance. The difficulty of preserving them has
always boon an impediment to their more exten
sive employment. In the last number of the
Journal of the Frankttat- butittue it Is stated
that coal oil le a better article for keeping these
meads than neptha, which is generally used for
that purpose. In coal oil aodiutti retains its lustre
for months or years, while in the purest napths
the metal quickly tarnishes, and its silvery white
ness gives place to a dull, leaden hue.
