,now travelling -ih- this country, writekthusinone
of his recent letters concerning Irish emigration to
AmericarVv!, ,r V\/,'' . ,-
/ .Washington, Jane 2,1860.
,; Some Irish-and American journals* have -'(no
' donbt c honeSt toytives^' been reporting, with
father raSjrpcommd’nt. that’t have been, tincoura
gso2 emigration from, Ireland to this oountry. It is,
not so. .1 havc never .encduraged such ’ a scheme.
1 have that when a man is exter
minated by'the oru el bigotry and tho infamons ad*
ministration of-Ireland, he can, beyond all doubt,
secure a happy home heroj provided he be single
and sober , and have a friend here to receive him.
A married .|aan has a bad chance hero; his first
embarrassments with a wife and ohildren are al-:
most insurmountable, and in the majority’ of instan
ces he sinks under them. How, for instance, can he
carry them hundreds of miles along railroads?
Where is the money? And if be leaves them be
hind in the ; how can he support them while
he is himself unsettled. /’They will starve, or go
to the poorhouso in separation and a broken heart.
'.Again, a young gentleman ( or an old gentleman,
> has no ohance here;. All the public offices are ob
| tained by Vote; and hence no one hut a known
pitUen -o&n obtain them. .This country is sood
only-for the laborer or the tradesman; and in
these oases it' is, perhaps, the most prosperous
Country ftL the whole world. - No, 1 have decidedly
Pever encouraged Irish emigration; but, as I hate
tho Irish poorhouse, and as I abhor military ser
vice in the English-army, I point out the advan
tages of this nation, In‘.order toproteot my poor,
persecuted countrymen from the insulting degra
dation of ,the Irish poor law, and to snatch them
t.om the thankless cruelty with whioh their life
and their death are-treated by the ungrateful laws
of ■ the perfidious British military authorities.
Would I not muoh, prefer to see them die in the
swamps of Florida, struggling for independence,
than to perish in fighting for ungratefal England?
Is not weir blood more honored when shed for
their wives and ohildren in the Valley of the
Mississippi than when spilled in India,or the Crl
bea, defending tho cause of a nation of relentless
b’gots, ipappe&sable persecutors? No, I' have
iiever encouraged an Irißh exodus; but I have en-
Ucavored to make the heartbroken happy against
/ho undying infliction of England’s misrule. Bri
tain, however, is very near a catastrophe whioh
will try her courage and her resources, and Bh&ke
hVr Constitution. A storm is gathering slowly and
fitoadily, which may soon burst ■ on her shores ; a
formidable host is almost on the march to the Eng
lish coast, to slacken a nation’s thirst in national
revenge; and the loud cries of Ireland during cen
turies of insult may at length he heard in a just
national retribution. Courts, and thrones, and
'uiers have'been latterly running riot in national
rxtrayaganoe; - and mankind may be at length
;«wakened fe reform these royal abases by rejecting
rampant monarchy; and raising the standard of
cheap self-government.
; I have heed mostkindly received and generously
'rsated by the bpadsof tho Administration in this
city; |p ( acknowledgmCnt of whioh X beg you will
join your respect and gratitude with mine.
