TO THE PUBLIC.
St« thar Bh ° UW b 8 pr *- to thow of foreign mama-
Thcir sale has been constantly on the increase ever
flinoe the business was commenced; thus proving that
they have grown into popular favor through their ta
rrmjtc merits. As an evidenoe of the extent to whioh
they have received the endorsement of the publio, we
may state, that upwards of Thirty Thousand of them
are now in daily me in the United State*, giving perfeot
to their owners.
This result has been effected in the teeth of the most
determined and violent opposition from the greater part
of those in the Watch Importing Trade in the large
uKa . 0 have f J*t«niattoally a«ed all their influence
with tneir ourtomer* to disoonrage their dealing in ap
article which threatened, by its superiority, to displaoe
the foreign watoh to a great extent. Many of the Jew
ellers and Watohmakers of the interior, a l&rge'propor
tion of them foreigners, seconded the efforts of the
Watoh Importers, being persuaded by their oounseis,
and misled by a oontraoted and imperfeot view of their
own interests} by the fear of loss on their stook of im
ported watches, and tbe apprehension that their profits
might be diminished through competition in a well
known domestioartiole,-with other groundless preju
dices arising from a superfiot&l inquiry into the subject
Notwithstanding this, however, the w&tohes have stead
ily gained in the estimation of the people, the retailers
have been constrained to keep them to supply the de
mand, and by degrees, we are happy to add, their pre
judices and alarms are being dissipated.
Our present system of making the different parts of
eaoh watch the exact counterpart of every other watoh
of the same series. leads to auniformity jn quality whioh
oan never be attained by the foreign process. If one ot
our watches is good, all are gdod; whereas each foreign
watch is only a probability by itself, depending upon the
skill and fidelity of the particular workman who may
happen to be employed upon it. In addition to these
primary conditions of suooess, every watoh issued by
the Company,}* made of the tnost ohoioe and induring
materials, oarpfully finished by the various processes to
which they are iut\j*6ted, and then put together, in
spected and severely tested by the best workmen in the
faotory. Such has been the o&rewith.whioh these va
rious duties have been performed, that out of the large
number of w&tohes sold, not more than a dozen or two.
have been returned to the Company for exchange, from
any cause whatever.
Every watch is guarantied by a guaranty that is good
for something, and by parties that oan bo readily
reaohfid. Foreign watches, of the most inferior descrip
tion, are oflen/uHp guarantied b» their makers, whom
it to call to acooimt under any oiroum
stanoes;
American watches come to the consumer unburdened
by the various expenses and profits incident to impor
tation—the total of whioh, including ous tom-house du
ties, more than doable the prime oost of the watch be
fore it gets to the pookei of the ultimate owner. This
consideration of itself should decide the question in our
favor. . ■
Every dollar diverted from the purohase of foreign
w&tohes is so muoh saved to the country ; so muoh en
couragement to home industry, and so much added to
the publio wealth. We do not aslc a preference on these
grounds, if our watches are not better, for the money,
than the foreign.
To conolude—we claim that our watches are the best
and most durable time-keepers In the world, besides be
ing the oheapest: and we assert that aseries of watches
wa« never made that would show so little average va
rmll&h-from true time as those we have issued. In in
dividual instances their performance has been unsur
passrd by any thing reoorded in the history of horology.
. A descriptive pamphlet, containing full information
aijd numerous certificates from wel-known individuals,
may bo had onapplicatfcm to the undersigned.
C MJTION.—As our watoh is now extensively coun
terfeited by foreign manufacturers, wo have to inform
the pubho that no watoh is of our production whioh is
unaccompanied by a certificate of genuinets, bearing the
numberof tbewatoh, and signed by our Treasurer, A
£. ROBBING, or by our predecessors, APPLETON,
TRACY, k CO.
As these watches are for sale by Jewellers generally
throughout the Union, we do not solicit orders for single
w&tones.

CARD TO THE J^UBLIO,
CONGRESS SPRING,
SARATOGA, APRIL 16, 1860.
An attempt has been made to deoeive the publio,by
persons offering what they call “Cowonxss WATER”
from Fountains; andtt the prioe of six (0) oents per
glass. The wholesale prioe of the genuine Congress Wa
ter, at New York, being about 7* cents per glass, the im
position of pretending to sell at retail at less than oost,
and without allowance for freight, cartage, or breakage,
is apparent; but their probable oourse baa been to
empty one bottle of genuine Congress Water into a
Fountain filled with their trash, and thereby christening
its total oontents.
We have imvnn sold Congress Water in Fountains,
nor in vessels of any other description than ordinary
sized glass bottlbs. The oork of every bottle of the
genuine is branded ** CONGRESS WATER ”“‘*o. A
W.»” and any, without those words and letter* on the
oork, is coomtxesbit, whether from Fountains or
Bottles. CLARKE A WHITE,
Proprietors of Congress Spring.
