SPECIAL NOTICES.
Do You Shave? have - a private
word for our unfortunate mAsoullne brothers, excluding
the gentlrr sex, merely bec&use nature has granted
them an immun’tr from the ourte entailed on us—
shaving. For t everai years we performed tho matutinal
cuttiog and elashing operation, facetiously teiraed
shaving, ignorant of aught to ameliorate tlie rasped con
dition in which we invariably found our human faoe
divine. One little year since, after reading in every
conceivable journal, published in every oonoeivable
plane, a succession of ounningly-worded advertisements
oi BURNETT’B KaLLIBTON, we decided to try the
preparation. Burnrtt, inventor of this balm of Gilead,
if we had our way artnonument of purest marble should
rise Co your honor, to be pa‘d for by a tax on barbers*

WATCHES, JEWELRY, dec.
AMERICAN WATOHES.
THE AMERICAN WATCH COMPANY,
AT WALTHAM, MASS.
TO THE PUBLIC.
Attention is invited to the following statement of feet*
in regard to these watches, and some considerations
why they should be preferred to those of foreign manu
facture :
Thoirsalo has been constantly on the inoiease ever
sinoe the business was commenced; thus proving that
they have grown into popular favor through thtir in
trinsic merits. As an evidenoe of the extent to whioh
they have roceived the endorsement of the publio, we
may state, that upwards of Thirty Thousand of them
are now in dailyuse in the United'fitates, giving perfeot
satisfaction to their owners.
This result has been effeoted in ihe teeth of the most
determined and violent opposition from the greater part
of those in the Watoh Importing Trade in the large
cities, who have systematically used all their influence
with their oustomera to discourage their'dealing in an
article which threatened, by its superiority, to displace
the foreign watoh to a groat extent, Many of the Jew
ellers and Watchmakers of the interior, a large propor
tion of thorn foreigners, teoonded the efforts of ihe
Watoh Importers, being persuaded by their counsels,
and misled by a oontiaoted and imperfect view of their
own interests; by the fsar of loss on their stook of im*
ported watches, and the apprehension that their profits
might be diminished through competition in a well
known domestio artiole, with other groundlesg~preja
dioes arising from a superficial inquiry into thesuhieot
Notwithstanding this, however, the watohes have stead
ily gained in the estimation of the people, the retailors
have been constrained to keep them to supply the de
mand, acd by degroes, we oto happy to add, their pre
judice* and alarms are being dissipated.
Our present system of making ihe different parts of
each watch the exact counterpart of every other watoh
of the same gerieg, leads toauniformity in Quality whioh
oan nover be attained by the foreign process. If one oi
our watches is good, all are good j whereaseaohforeign
watch is only a probability by itself, depending upon the
skill and fidelity of the particular workman who may
happen to be employed upon it. In addition to these
primary conditions of suooess, every watoh issued by
the Company t* made of the most oholoe and enduring
materials, carefully finished by the various processes to
whioh they are subjected, and then put together, in
spected and severely tested by the best workmen in the
footory, Buoh has been the care with whioh these va
nous duties have been performed, that oat of the large
number of watches sold, not more than a doxen or two
bava been returned to the Company for exchange, from
any cause whatever.
BOSTON,
Every watoh is guarantied by a guaranty that is good
for something, and by parties that oan be readily
reached. Foreign-watches, of the most inferior descrip
tion, are oflen/urty guarantied bv their makers, whom
it is impossible to call to acoount tinder any circum
stances.
Amerioan watches come to the consumer unburdened
by the various oxponses and profits incident to impor
tation—the total of whioh, including custom-house da
tes, more than doable the prime cost of the watch be
fore it getsi to the pocket of the ultimate owner. This
consideration of itself should decide the question in our
favor.
Every dollar diverted f/om the purchase of foreign
watohes is so muoh saved to the country; so much en
couragement to home industry, and so muoh added to
the public wealth. We do not ask a preference on these
grounds, if our watohes are not better, for the money,
than the foreign.
To conclude—we claim that oar watohes are the best
and most durable time-keepers in the world, besides be
ing the cheapest t and we assart that aseries of watches
was never made that would show so little average va
riation from true time as those we have issued. In in
dividual instances their performance has been unsur
passed by am thing reoorded in the history of horology.
Adesoriptive pamphlet, containing full information
and numerous certificates from we 1-known individual*,
may be had on application to the undersigned.
CaUTION.—As our watch is now extensively coun
terfeited by foreign manufacturers, we have to inform
the publio thatnowaioh is of our production whioh is
unaccompanied by a certificate of genuiness. bearing the
number of the watoh, and signed by our Treasurer, JR
J 2. ROBBINB, or by our predecessors, APPLETON,
TRACY i Ic CO.
As these watches are for sale by Jewellers generally
throughout the Union, we do not solioit orders for single
watches.
For the Amerioan Watoh Company.

CARD TO THE PUBLIC.
CONGRESS SPRING,
SARATOGA, APRIL 16,
An attempt has been made to deoeive the publie,by
persons offering what they call 4, Coxosxss Watir”
from Fountains; and at the prioe of six (6) oents per
glass. The trAo/«oIa prioe of the genuine Congress Wa
ter, at New York, being about?* oents per glass, the im
position of pretending to sell at retail at less than cost,
and sritlioutallow&noe for freight, cartage, or breakage,
is apparent; but thoir probable course has been to
empty em« bottle of genuine Congress Water into a
Fountain filled with their trash, and thereby christening
its tots) contents.
We have nxvrr sold Congress Water in Fountains,
