The April number of the Eclectic illaastne
(edited and published by Mr. W. IL Bid ell, of
Now York, and handed to us by his agent, Mr. W.
B. Veber) oontains two well-executed portraits, of
no ordinary interest. Ono is a portrait of Macau
lay, engraved by John Sartain, from the original
by E. 11. Eddie, an English artist ; the other, by
the same engraver, after the portrait of Longfellow,
painted by Buchanan Road for our townsman, Mr
Perd..7. Brew'. Of these, the latter is by far th,
better likeness—it is the man as well as the poet
The letter-press in the Eclectic is selected, with
good taste, from the loading British perlodic'sils.
The first number of Vol. IV: of the Coentopolt•
tan Art Journal has a very neat illustration, ao
its frontispiece,—" 000 d 'for Nothing,” engraVed on
steel by J. Rogers. It represents a little wretch of
a boy, to whose afflicted mother the village school
master is making sad complaints of his inattention
and devotion to 3 ' all kinds of bedtimes,' as we
once hoard a country pedagogue deolate of Ammo
body else. The painter's name Is not mentioned
here, - which ;Is a • great ivjusticep for the Picture
very dramatioally tells the 'whole -story. (There
are several engravings on wood, and many artiele,
upon painting, sculpture, and art generally.; In a
supplement is given a list of the premiums awarded
to subscribers to the Cosmopolitan Art Association,
for the sixth year, on January 31st, 1860. Several
of these were awarded in this State. There were'
27,703 subscribers in all, and the greatest number
(2,710) were in Pennsylvania; of these 1,789 sub
scribed in Philadelphia alone. This stmericdity is
due to the exertions of E. H. Hunt A Co , the Asso

South and West there were few subseribeis. In
other leading States the numbers wore,-Nowbrork

Wither away, green leaves !
Wither sway, sweet flowers !
For me in vain young Spring has thrown
Her mantle o'er the bower..
Sing not to me, gay birds.
Borne in bright plumage hillier!
The heart recoils from Pleasure's vows
Whoa all its fond hones wither.
IL
Wither away, ye leye.
With which once Study bleued me!
Ile closed, henceforth, my gentle books,
Nor hope to Interest me !
For me tune not your lays,
' Italian songstress, neither
The heart recoils from Pleasure'. voice,
When all its fond hopes wither!

Wither away, sweet-hearts, ,
Nor dig ht your gay attire !
In vain you stretoh your snowy arms,
And light your eyes with fire. • '
Wreaths not your limbs for '
Though none than yours be tither!
The heart recoils from Pleasure's voice,
When all its fond hopes wither!

With hope entombed thus early!
