Otive TOE DEVIL RIR Dom.—To the Editor of
the New York • Times: The proceedings of the
Board of Aldermen, as reported in the Times of
Friday, embrace the remarks of Alderman Starr,
upon Alderman Brady's resolution to appoint a
committee to investigate the charges against the
Oommen Council, made by the editor of the Herald.
Alderman Starr, as reported, said :"Had not the
editor of the Herald been charged with libeling
and blackmailing men to mesh a degree that they
were compelled to commit self-murder? Now, who
was the murderer in these oases? Had not the
editor of that paper in the same way murdered the
president of a bank? He had accused others of
committing acts that entitled them to a place on
Blaokwell'a Island, when ho had been on the point
of golog there himself. How many times had he
been cowhided ? Three times, to his recolleetion =
onee James Watson Webb, once by Thomas
Hamblin, once by John Graham."
Full and accurate statistics being among the
most importent bases of just, legislation, the above
aotionat of Bennett's floggings needs correction, as
,it "understates the number of• his chastisements,
just as the neitspapers which denominated his last
punishment by John Graham his ninth flogging,
overstated the correct total. Bennett has been
publicly flogged only seven timis, es the subjoined

' Jan: 20, 1836, James Watson Webb flogged him

Boston Herald the particulars of a very remark

Mr. William M. Parsons, whose mysterious dis
appearance from his home and friends in Law
rence has been before noticed, was found yesterday
noon In one of the rooms of the South Boston Hotel,
on Fourth street, he there having committed eui
dile. The facts connected with this melancholy
event are these Mr. Parsons left his home ou the
fifth of present month, and came to this city and
made a short stop at the American Mouse, since
whioh time his friends could obtain no clue to his
whereabouts. It seems, however, that after
leaving the hotel he proceeded to the hotel in
South Boston, and on calling for a room was
shown Into room No. 16, in the upper. story of
the house. Here he remained a little while, When
be left, bat shortly after returned, and, as was sup
posrd, retired to -rest., Next - morning the ohm
barmaid tried the door, but, finding it looked sup
papist it was unoccupied, and paid no attention to
the circumstance. Day.-after day she found that
look stilt turned, and. stilloautiaued to suppose thnt
it had no occupant, and the clerk in the office had
forgotten the circumstance of having let the apart-
ment, also supposed it vacant, Yesterday noon, the
clerk went to show another guest to room No. 18,
and finding it still locked, placed the stranger in
another apaitment while he wont to the °Sloe to
gm the key to 16. Not finding the key in the office,
it flashed across hie recollection that Waa fort
night slime,' the room had hamlet to a young man
whose departure be did not now seem to remember.
The door was then buret open, and the body of
young Parsons was found on the floor, in such a
state as indicated that life had been extinct for
several days. On an examination of the body it
appeared that three deep incisions had been made
in the main artery of the, right arm, and besides
this, two partially empty bottles of laudanum were
Sound by his side. Notice of the event was given
to the authorities, but, under the eireumeMnoes, it
was deemed useless to hold on inquest, , and the
body was delivered to his friends, to bo taken to
lament:a to-day.
The deceased was a most amiable and worthy
young man, formerly clerk of the Lawrence police
court, and a brother of Colonel Thomas Parsons,
representative from Lawrence. Be had been
gloomy anti depressed in spirits of late, but no
cause et all adequate to the rash deed can be con
jeotured. Lie was twenty-six years of age.
