    The Masons and Monet Vernon.
Mom the-Mount Vernon Record} -
• At the, annual meetinvor , the Masonic Grand
lag° of Virginia, in. Deoember 1857, resolutions
were panted expressive of their hearty sympathy
in the object of the Mount Vernon Ladies' Assoola
tion of the Union, and of their intention to appeal
to theldasonto Order throughout the United States
to unite aaa body, in assisting to purchase the
lifoxiiand Grave of Washington. As soon as the
oorresimndeigio between the Grand Seoretary, Dr.
lohn Dove, and the presiding officer of the Also.
'Motion announcing this fast was published, the
Grand Lodge of South Caroline (the native State
of the Regent of the Mount Vernon ASsoolation)
Willed a spaced mating and issued an' appeal to
the imbordtuate lodges throtighOut. the State, to
respondpromptly and generously to this call upon
their sympathies. „
The State Is small, containing not More than
270,000 white Inhabitants, and If wo are not raisin:.
formed, not far over forty lakes tom of, them
small and bat recently organized, 'yet in a ,few
months afterward, forty-one or the lodges had
-contributed in the ratio of one hundred cents per
member, and the handsome stun of $1,697.37 was
paid over to the'lfount Vernon Assoolation„ -This
result led Mc friendlier the cause to build , 00nft:
dentiy upon sigoarassistanoe from the Mame in
our country, who, beside being interested In the
cause as citizens and pariote, must be peouliarly
attached to the memory of their illustrious brother
as Masons, to whose fraternal hearts the purobase
and preservation of Mount Vernon should be pions
labor of love and gratitude. But thus far we have
• been greatly disappointed; their notion has been
very partial, and not worthy of that large and
wealthy body. In no State, so far as we can learn,
but the one honorable exception mentioned, have
they aged as a body. We take pleasure, however,
in reporting here the contributions which have
bean received from the several States up to this
date; the names of the several lodges and members
'having been republished from time to time In the
registry of the Record : •

The contributions thrut far of a body, estimated,

From the above statement, it is seen that the
Masons, as an order, bare dot fulfilled the high ea
peotations entertained of. them. We would oltll
their attention to the foot, that the whole pantiles°
money is Meal, tluit $20,000 beside is now in Os
session of the association--4onseerated to the scr:
cored purpose of arresting decay, and of restoring
the house and. grounds to their former condition.
All contributionsnow will go to the accumulation of
a fend needed to enable the association to sustain,
prudently and becomingly, the high trust it has"
assumed as the guardians of the precious dint that
reposes on the banks of the Potomac. '
The Republican Candidate for Speaker
YETTER TOON HOE. JOHN SIIERMAN TO THE TEMA
' DELPRIA COMMITTEE,
WASHINGTON OITT, Jan. 10, 1800
Gravvveren : The claims of public duty hero
will deny me the pleasure of participating,
personally, in the compliment which you have ten
dered to the lion. Babe Peyton. I regret this the
more, since one of the objeots intended is to bring
together men of position and Influence from differ
ent sections of our minion country, In order that
they may unite in such an expression of sentiment
an will tend to promote peace and good•wIll through
out the Union." • • • "
No man, North or South, -who is animated by a
'patriotic impulse, or who appreciates his citizen
ship in its high and national sense, om hesitate to
approve the expression of sentiment," which you
propose. Events have recently, occurred. Yrbich:
the reason and justioo of the eountiy deplore and
condemn, not only as wrong in - themselves, but
calculated to loosen the ties of fraternity and fel
lowship by which - our people should be bound to
gether. The unworthy attempts of partisans' to
charge the responsibility of those individual ants
upon a whole notion, and to arraign it before the
world as sympathizing with such criminality, has
provoked a feeling of deep indignation, because of
this shameful injustice: The North' knows fits
duties and its rights, and moans to fullil the one
and to assert the other, Its the Union and under the
Constitution. It has no desire to infringe up6n any
right of the South, nor to entourage, palliate; or
justify on-,rages upon or invasions of its territory,
or any means by which they may be incited; nor
to disturb those relations of brotherhood by whioh
we have grown into the dignity and proportions of
a great nation.
The Constitution was framed and adopted in n
spirit of conciliation and mutual concession. ' If
wo do not inherit all the , virtues, we may at least
cherish the precepts and the example of the fathers
who projected that work of wisdom and patrjotism.
In the dark hours of the Republic, when civil com
motion threatened perils more serious than the
rash ravings of (Reunionists and agitators now do,
that Constitution proved to be our refuge and safe
ty. Lot us cling to it in this period of discord and
strife, as the best hope and guide, each section tie
ing with the other In renewing its devotions to all
the compromises under whieh it was formed, and
all the obligations which it imposes. Accepted
with this purpm, there will be no North or Smith,
no East or West, beta contented and happy Peo
ple, enjoying the blessings, and sharing the pins
parity of a common and glorious Union.

BONNE IN TUB MISBOURI LEOISLALTIJNYL-A
respondent of the Missouri Democrat, under dato
of Jefferson city. January 13, says :
6, As I informed you last evening, by telegraph,
a 'little affair' took 'plaoo between Messrs. Minor
and Davis. Its ,cause was this : During the after-
WM while Mr. Mir or wee In the chair, a Tote
was ' taken on a motion to reconsider a vote upon
veiling for the 'previous question.' Mr. Davis, of
Bnehanan county, naked for a 'division ;' Mr.
Minor said it was nonsense to call for a division
when the Tote was so unequal. Mr. Davie said it
WOO not for Mr. Minor to deeds about the nonsense
of the call., Mr. Minor then called on the sergeant
at-arms to remove that idiot.' Mr. Davis, shaking
his fist at the Speaker pro tern. (Mr. Minor,) said
You can't pot me out.' But little occurred ,be-
tween the parties until the House bad adjourned,
when' a neat little rough and tumble took place.
Mr. Davis sent in his right which landed in:the
frontispiece 'of his antagonist. Mr. Minor tapped
the nasal organ of Mr. Davis, and to- him (Mr.
Minor) must be accorded the °malt of drawing ilrst
blood.
"Both combatants took the Aoor rather involun•
tartly at one time, end in their dement they'd°.
motioned one chair, and sant a couple of desks
' reeling.'
"A ' division'. was• then- loudly polled for, And
after some difficulty the pugilists were separated.
." It was then moved And seconded that further
lath, proceedings be indefinitely postponed.
"Mr. Davis attempted to lay that motion on the
table, by planting his knuoklea on the title•Paie of
Mr. Minor.
This was deplored elightly out of order, where
upon
"Mr. Davis moved to adjourn to the Capitol
grounds and take a test vote in the fighting Atli.
Vita of himself and his 'friend, by a muscular en•
garment.
"This motion was lost and the Rome dispersed,
