LECTURE nv Ray. A. A. WILLITS.-011 Friday
evening of the present week, at Conbert Hall. the Rev.
A. A. Willits, or this city, will deliver a tontine under
the mistimes of the Jefferson Literary Union. This will
afford an opportunity, to all who have not yet done so,
of hearing that eloquent orator upon a theme which ne
311 constitutionally better fitted to treat than vertigo/
any other living lecturer. His subject will be "Bun
ghole." All who have over heard him in the pulpit or
on the platform, will appreciate the adaptation of so
genial n topio to the wither genius of M. WOlits.
[From the New York Doily Tribune, July 25,1819,)
PREPARED GLUE.—Little oonvenienoes for gene—
ral family use, are often of more value than what are
called" great inventions." There is no housekeeper
that has not often been annoyed by squeaky, rickety
aiming, sofas, tablet., eta . which have become so by the
joints where they are put together becoming shrunken
and loose, and so long as furniture is left in this condi
tion there is constant danger of a general smaih•up•
And again, gnoh amodents as breakage of furniture do
occasionally occur " in the best regulated families."
To remedy the annoyanoe and perplexity oocaeioned
by these troubles, we keep in the house a small quan
tity of Prepared Olue, which can be applied to the ef
fected parte by any parson of ordinary skill, with much
less trouble than sending the article to a cabinet ma
ker, to say nothing of the saving of expense. The kind
we use is labelled " Hpalding's Celebrated Prevails,'
Glue—useful in every family, ," and as we have found it a
valuable addition to our cabinet of " little conve
niences," we fully concur in the sentiment of the label,
,THE G. P. E. 0.

a RATiVILLB STOKER'
Greeting to the patrons of the
Philadelphia Temple of Fashion,
For the years 1809 and 1860.
Rind patrons, one and all, to roll I bring,
In humble verse, the heart's best offering ;
Greeting warm, and salutation, of a friend,
Upon my moan I pray you now attend.
The year !lath eyed, and with its joys and woes
We sing the princely store, at which to buy your
clothes;
When round the world we turn our beaming oyes,
What mighty works of art and science do arise.
Mankind seems bent on setting at defiance
All that would chock the onward march of *wormer
Who would have thought a few years back
Of laying down a Posarnger-Railway track
Or that. Philadelphia ahonld pass creation
By that one act—oonsolidation•
Yet, so it is I Her genius we revere,
Her motto, " Right P' hereon' have nought to rep.
Behold the telegraphic Wire !
Behold: and wander, and admire!
Swifter than lightnings from the sky,
Its mute oommunlostiong fir,
'Obedient to the will of those who
Of GRAIIV/XXX STOATS do buy their clothes!
Wherever we may gams we find
The work of man's inventive mind.
The painter's pencil now Is nought,
In spite of what it once has wrought;
The sun himself of you'll allow)
Will paint your perfect likeness now;
And not an artist pan bUtevie
The volt/eh-painter of the sky.
Science in every branch is found
To stand upon a higher ground.
Despondeney is known no more,
And children cry, " Excelsior I"
No longer need we, with alarm,
Regard the lose of leg or arm;
A woad one process is applied,
And soon another limb "uppliod !
Of other wonders might we tell—
Of tempest and of wreak;
Of murder at the midnight hoer;
Of war. full many a " speak :"
Of ships that far away at era,
Went down before the blast;
Of stifled cries of "sonny.
As life's last moment is pasimd ;
Of earthquakes, and of suicide ;
Of thousands nameless woes,
Induces, in nearly every cam,
By wearing shapeless clothes.—
, Otboilere bursted; hiss-ted banks;
Of riots, duels fought
Of robbers with their prey maned;
Of thieves with booty caught ;
Of children bat and children found ;
Of things that need correction
Of Cook, and Copps, and old Brown,
Of the Harper's Ferry Insurrection,
But let us leave the subject here,
For Wetness matters interfere;
And busieeu (which we have in view)
Vast always be attended to.
While dwelling upon this and that.
Mob have we had to wonder at;
But nothing so excites the folke
Ae the clothing sold by 011iticifiLLI Brom.
No house like his wee ever raised—
Who can observe it unamageg
Distinguished foreigners have viewed
The " palatial" in Its magnitude,
And freely own'd its rightful ahem.
To !meting, universal fame,
Bow altered now the sons appease,
Within the lapse of half-score years!
Whore end the Thespian temple stood,
Now stands the atom of Eringl the good.
The aged citizen surveys
Th' extended scene with wondering gaze,
And mien, with an uplifted brow,
seareg know the city now !
Reader! your notice we have striven
To Az on Chestnut street—" GOY ',—
Which promisee are set apart
For what is termed a clothing mart
And much do old and young admire
Its stook of READT-MADE ATTIRE;
And beauteous fabrics, rich and new,

HARPER'S WEEKLY.
A FIRST-OL ASS ILLUSTRATED PAPER
ME BEST AND CILEAPEST
FAMILY NEWSPAPER IN ME WORLD
•FIVE CENTS A NUMBER : $2.50 A YEAR
The First Number of the Fourth Volume of Haltpart'll
WEEKLY will appear on the 4th January. 1800. This
year over 4,600,000 numbers of HARPRR'S WEEKLY will
have been sold, nearly half of which will be bound for
reference. In commencing the new volume, the pro
prietors desire to state that it hsa bean their aim to
reader HARPRR's WEEKLY, in the first place, and be
fore anything else, a FIRST-CLASS NEWSpAPER-6 picto
rial history of current events, equal to the daily press
in fullness of desoription, and superior to the daily press
aa combining illustrations with text. How far they have
attained their aim, the three volumes now published
will show. The illustrations in the third volume wilt
bear evidence to the fidelity with which every import
ant event of the past yuar hes been related and illus
trated in the pages of HARERR's WEEKLY. They would
refer especially, in this connection, to the Italian
war, the Great Eastern steamship, the Harper'■ Ferry
outbreak, the Utah expedition, the Paraguay expedi
tion, China, etc., etc. The value of the paper clan be
best realized by supposing that it did not exist, and by
trying to conceive hew little people would really know
amusing events if they had to rely on written descrip
tions alone. In this respect, the arrangements for the
coming year a a more complete than they have been
heretofore. Han erne Wisexty has regular artist cor
respondents in almost every quar,er of the globe, and
°wetlands the pencil of the first artists at home. It
moreover, in order to present its renders with a
complete illustrated history of our age, continue to
transfer to its nages the beet end moat generally inter
esting pictures from foreign illustrated jouTnals. In
wont, the subscriber to HARPER'S WEEKLY may rely on
finding in its pages next year an accurate, well-drawn,
well-engraved, and well-printed picture of every memo
rable event which occurs, and a portrait of every man
who attreote the general attention of the people of this
country.
Ham a's WEEKLY Will continue, aa heretofore, to
Publish the best tale, that are written by native and
foreign authors. It has already published a A Tale of
Tics Cities, by CHARUS DICIOINS (With original illus
trations drawn for HARPER'/I \Yeasty); nag Will
Ile Do With It? by Sir E. LYTTOR DELAYER; The
Dead Secret, by \Timm COLLINS Lois the Witch, by
Mrs. HASKELL. A Good Fight, by CHARLES READS. IL
is now publishing The Woman in White, by WILKIE
Cottimi, and will shortly commence the publication of
a new serial story of American Life, by an eminent
American author. This story also will be illuetrated by
the inimitable penoil of AteLenan. On or before the
conclusion of these tales, others of equal merit will be
commenced, it being the intention of the publishers to
secure every work of undoubted excellence that is
written Lore or abroad. It le hardly necessary to add
that the foreign serials which appear in HARPER'S
WassLy are purchased from their authors by the pro
prietors of HARPER'S WEEKLY, who, in many in
stances, give for a mere right of priority what MOWS
to a handsome copyright to the author.
In addition to serials, each number of HARPER'S
WEEKLY will contain a short complete tale by a native
or foreign author. In respect to these tales, as with the
serials, the ouldishers will publish the best that they
can obtain, without regarding their origin.
The other department* of limas's WEEKLY wall
continue to receive careful attention at the hands of the
publishers.
