Cadwalader.--John Cosgrove, second mate of the
Thomas Jefferson warput on his trial, on the
charge of. cruel ' treatment to Henry Wolff, one of

The defence contended that the 'beating wai not
malicious nor excessive, and palled, witnesses to'
substantiate this view of , the osse._the closing
speech, Mr. Bull took-occasion to condommsome of
the newspaper preen for its sccalled sympathy for
the "oppressed American sailor," and argued that
mush of It was Mistaken. ,It was bestowed on the
laszaroni and contiots'of Europe, who, as • soon as
they are sheltered under the American flag, think

-charged the fury, taking the same ground as did

that if Cosgrove had kicked Wolff and injured him
dangerously, as was alleged, it was not intentional,
but accidental—that no malice had been preyed,
and that the juiy.were bound to acquit.
- This easy method of disposing of the case did
' hot appear "to take" -at once, and the jury re
. - tired for deliberation. They came into court a few
minutes after six o'clock, last evening, with a ver
dict of " guilty" on the bill alleging the kicking.,

.altogether unexpected by the defendant and his

Lieut. Tennison, of the revenue cutter Henry A.
Hodge, arrived at Galveston on the morning of:the
'23a, having left Point Isabel the day before, and
bririgiaig news from Brownsville'to the 20th ult.
This - gentleman brings full and official aceminte
from. the scene of difficulties on' the lower Rio
Grande.
The cutter, in addition to her own crew, carried
- down sixteen men from Indianola, under command
of Oapt. Bushel, deputy collector of that port. The
men from the cutter and the United States troops
went up on the steamer Grampus,-on' the night of
'the 16th nit. Among the documents 'brought .by
Lieut. T611511110D; to a letter from Brownsville,
dated November 19; to Lieut. - Lan on, in com
mand of the United States 'Wider al Braces San
tiago, born whiob we niake thefollowing extracts:
The Rangers made- a moot on yesterday, to
foiloYol;thefineety: They encountered him in eon
•eiderable force, Just 'above Banta Relta ; the obj ect
being mostly to see *here be might be found. The
party returned. It is underidood that one of the
enemy was killed -by the advance of the Rangers. •
The.b'hoys were anxious to pitch in, but discretion
prevailed over valor, and thereame back.
It is my - wish and that Of your other friends, to
have you come up and take part ; with your advice
and services, if you feel like going along,,we think
you would bo particularly useful to the Rangers,
by giving them a little wholesome advice and assist
in leading them in the expedition. We have agreed
to await a day or two for the return of 'our express
to the , upper country in search of the expected
OoMpantes, op their 'way , down.` Our men bad in
structions to go es far as Rio Grande City.

suggest, in view of this, whether it would not be

Lieutenant Taylor, of the 'Midge, who had been
to Brownsville; returned to Bram Santiago on the
20th. and writes :
Brownsville is in close siege, and the troops
there will not enable them to make any successful
attack mien Cortland, should he be In such force as
represented. They •will do nothing rashly, and
have a wary enemy to fight." .
The forces now- In Brownsville are 80 Rangers
under Captain Tobin; 48 United States troops ; 15
men from cutter Dodge; 50 Mexican troops, and
100 citizens—total, 293 men,
At Brownsville, from the 28th Sept. to the 17th
November. the whole ember of the citizens of
Brownsville, except 'the 'friends Of Cortinal,havit
