widader.—Peter Keifoviell was charged with abstracting
a valuable inane) , letter from the post offiee at Mickin
sontownship, Columbia county , while acting in the ra
pacity of assistant postmaster. The letter in question
contained am in notes, was dated Bedford, May
1869, and sent by I. M. Hamel! to Richard Woods, trea
surer of tho Cumberland Valley Mutual hoteotion Com
pany. Mr. Russell was called and testaffEd as to sending
the money to Woods. Woods was examined end said
that he did not receive the letter containing the money
A desorption of the notes was kept by Russell, and from
which certain notes, passed by the defendant, were re
cognised es being part of the money tent to Woods.
Accordingly the defendant was arrested upon the charge
of embeXifille the letter.
It appears from the evidence that the postmaster at
Dickinson was lying dangerously at the time of the
embezzlement of the letter; and that persons came into
the Post office end took letters out of it, without any au
thority, from the postmaster. \Vitnesses were called
upon the part of the defence to prove this fact, and also
that the defendant had received large quantities of
money from.patties residing in Dickinson, thus enabling
the jury to Infer that the money might have come into
his poeseulon in an honest manner, and he not have
taken it from the letter. Verdict, not guilty.
