rendered a Verdict of guilty against both of the
, , defendants. Sentence was deferred.
In tho ease of Captain E. W. Power, recently
■ 'convicted of assault and battery on General John
D, Miles; Judge Thompson Imposed a fino of $2O,

after being almost equally-derided In opinion as

that the sentence, would be one of imprisonment.
On tho trial, it was ip evidence that tho Captain
had been grossly assailed, and bis face and wrist
cut, as wa3 testified to byseveral physiolans. A few
day a since, two.Gennans were conrfoted of an as*

They were fined five dollars, and then allowed to

whether the appraisement was to be made with

The appraisement is merely to ascertain the

The Union Safe.—The latest advices from Vir*

commiserate our friends at their needless alarm, and
have no hesitation in renewing our statement, that the
Union will continue Intaot just so long as we have In our

An Unique Costujie.—A young lady of Edge

One who was there describes liar dress (mad© entirely
of newspapers) as being unique and very beautiful. It
is said to have presentod, by candle light, n resemblance
to the richest brocade, so skilful was the arrangement
of its columos; in each of which appeared the usual
“ puff” for Granville Stokes, the celebrated clothier and
fashioner, No. 007 Chestnut street.
"No Winter ’till the Ponds are Full.”—
This is an old rnlo which generally bolds good. The re
cent drenobing rains have filled the ponds to their
brims, and Jack Frost, with his icicle benrd and nipping
breath, may speedily bo looked for. This condition of
things should admonish the prudent to prepare for the
severe season, and as a preliminary step we would ad
vise them to pay a visit to the Brown Stone Clothing

Mr. Saxe’s humor is constant amt exubsraut; he is
