EprcATiOMAi.—The night schools of this
city, were never so well attended aa at present. It
is incontemplation tp extend the term as fat as
March—a movement jrhich would certainly tend
towards the. happiest results. The great mistake
bfi those controlling those schools is; the short time
they allow to oach season. To bo sure, we cannot
bJawo the controllers for not oxtending this term,
for, very frequently, the appropriation of Coun
cils was out before Christmas This system of eve
ning education in public schools is one of the most
• effective, beoauso u addresses itself,to a olnss of
people thirsting for knowledge, and prevented, by
fortune or circumstances, from quenching that do
siro. It speaks to our mechanics and our laborers
—-to mon and women whose income is the rosult of
toil, anxiety, and disappointment. That it is so
popular, is an evidence' of crowing intolligenco
among the people. c The smallest thing we can do
is to foster that popularity .by our municipal
bounty..

A TALE OP
DISUNION! AND BORDER WAR.
BY J. B. JONES, Esq.,
[uthor of “ Wild Western Scenes,” “ H r rtr Path,” ft.
Comploto in two vMa., paper cover, prico One Dollar;
or bound m one volume cloth, for Ono Dollar
and Twenty-five Cents.
Tiio Publisher* of this powerful l>ook are confident
that tho simple announcement of a volume in the vein
“ Wild Western Scene*," and by tho same author, will
arouse an unwonted deraard for the netbook. “"Wild
Western Scones" has now reaoliod the already unpre
cedented sale of 100 000 copies, and its publishers now
continue to soli some 10,000 of it annually, although the
work was published noarly twenty yen** ago. The
nnmo of the now work by tho same author is
WILD SOUTHERN SCENES
A TALE OF
DISUNION! AND BORDER WAR
And it will undoubtedly, from its peculiar and absorb
ing oliaractor, at onoe occupy tho undivided attention of
a very large portion of the thinking and reading popu-
lation of America. While its disclosures at this time
will nssurodly.oreate a deep sensation among all reason
ing and reflecting bodioa, tho purely novel reader will,
at the saino time,be absorbed and diverted with the
strange and laughable story. No work having any of
tho distinguishing otmactonsti's of this surprising
production has ever appeared from the press, and its
very singularity must insure thousands of readers for
it at once.

From the Area «.
“A capital tale of l.ne incidents, patriotism, and
statesmanship. The Kx>k i* one of the most intensely
interesting that v,j have rend for many a day, and it is
amusing and patriotically instructive os well. Its influ
cnoo cannot tad to do good. We heartily eomm*ml it
to everybody. No one will commence to read and not
finish it.”

“ The author of * Wild Western Sonnes has Riven ns
another very entortarniop bouk. The terrible result*
that will follow the inevitable climax of sectional ntnd
nom and folly nro made the eubjent of the story. The
tale is of intenso interest. There is much humor run
nin? throughout it. The President's daughter, Captain
Nun. and Ornnrnl Crook, are avell-drawn characters.
We can confidently recommend tho work as one of nb-
