As the candidatesfor the Senate and Assembly are
placed in nomination, the inside incentives for le
gislative ambition, begin to leak out, the leaky
vessels disappointed aspirants. It is
good for the .people that these gentlemen are af
flicted. It brings'out a fact, here and there, that
otherwise woulcThot reach the public. Among
other schemes of considerable altitude, it is under
stood that some of the candidates in nomination
will favor not only the Broadway railroad, but a sale
of all the land known as the “ Battery enlargement,”
for the purpose of securing there a depotfor tho New
York Central Railroad, and linos of oity railway
that have> already been, or are to be pressed at the
next legislative session. It is pretty safe to assume
that a majority of tho nominees for th% Assembly,
of both parties, have sought and obtained a nomi’
nation more for the purpose of promoting personal
and pecuniary objects than the legitimate desire
to forward the honor and interests of the State.
Fact is, corrupt as all our legislative bodies are,
thoy are deteriorating sUU lower, and With a rapid
ity that is positively fearful.
The superintendent of poiioo, General Pillsbury,
has inaugurated a new duty on the part of hig
men, that entitles him to tho thanks of the press
and the publio, and deserves to be imitated in other
cities. He has issued special instructions to every
captain, to direct the police on duty at the
polls, to-morrow, to afford to tho messengers
of the Associated Press every facility for obtaining
access to -tho rooms of tho canvassers. This will
enable tho, morning papers, as well as tho press
throughout the oountry, to present tho official re
sult of tho canvass on tho morning succeeding tho
election. , .
There are some speculations as to the causes of
the unexpectedly largo addition to the voting popu
lation of the oity. In some quarters it is main
tamed that tho increase is attributable to a con
certed plan to carry the elebtion by fraud, and that
many of, the registrars are implloated in the
scheme. Others, on the oontrary, and this is
doubtless the .more accurate notion, account for
it on tho supposition that candidates and strong
partisans have been particularly active in inducing
their friends to register, and brought out thousands
who have not usually felt sufficient Interest in po
litical affairs to attend tho polls. The ward com-
mittees of both the, leading parties have been vigi
lant in scrutinizing the lists, and have not yet, as
far as tho publio are apprised, been able to
anything particularly obnoxious.
Professor .Lowe’s balloon experiment is now the
principal day amusomontof the town. 'As he con
tinues the’ inflation of the monster air-ship,
the publio really begin to think it me&nß some
thing. tip to this afternoon nearly one hundred
thousand feet of gas had already passed into tho
vast bag. The oar, boat, engine, and other ap
purtenances, attract great attention in the tent,
and the crowds that flook to see the thing peer at
it with curious scrutiny. Genin, who outfitted tho
Lady Oviedo with her magnificent drygoods, has
presented Professor Lowe with a splendid outfit of
fars, consisting of a robe, coat, and gloves, all of
which are on exhibition within the tent. There
arc, besides, blankets, fur-covered boots, Ac., for
tho use of the .aeronauts. The United States
Government have presented, through Lieutenant
Maury, one aneroid and one mercurial barometer,
as well as charts of tho Atlantic ocean.
Tho DrnUoy .Observatory peoplo, at Albany, pro-
pose to do one thing that will bo a convenience to
every man in New York who makes account of
punotnality. They propose to place a time ball on
tho Capitol at Albany, and another on' the Mer
chants' Exchango hero, by whioh the true time at
meridian will be communioated from the Observa
tory, and the ball drop within afraotion of aseoond
of twelve o’clock.
A desperate blaoklog-disputo took place yester
day, in,Broadway, between William T. Booker,
and two porsonagos named George T. Finnegan
and G. W. Hill—all <c greeks.” Broker* was beaten
and shot at by Finnegan, and oame within an ace
of being killed. Offioor Gray oame up just in time
to preveut the very deuce boing played; the tray
wore forthwith marched to the station houso, and
“ all fours” examined by Justice Qnaokenbush.
GENERAL INEWS.
Tremendous Excitement-—Air Elephant
Loohk in the Streets.—Last Friday morning, a
tromondous excitement was created m the lower
part of Williamsburg, Now York, oaused by tho
olephant belonging to Van Amburgh’s menagerie
becoming enraged and breaking loisse from his
keeper. A man had been employed to bring
some shavings to the meuagerie, which were
brought in a wagon. The man drove into the tent,
and .while unloading his wagon the elephant was
observed to grow restless at the sight of the homo,
whioh had a white blanket on. The man was ad
vised to take hia horse away, but before ho conld
do so the elephant advanced a few ateps and
knocked tho man down with a blow of his trunk,
next schod the horse b j means of his trunk, anc
injured him seriously. He next seized the wagon,
throwing it up in the air and breaking it to pieoes.
Bis anger-was fully aroused then, and proceeding
to tho cage of the prairie wolf smashed It with his
trunk, releasing him. Next in his mad way was
the cage of a black bear. The cage was demo
lished, but tho hear was chained up and oould not
escape. The cage of the zebra being next In his
way, be pushed it'through the' tent, and dear
through the wall of a small shanty at the back of
the tent. Then leaving the tent be got into the
street, pursued by hig keeper and hundreds of peo
ple, none of whom were able to cope with the en
raged elephant. Ho’did not molest passers by, but
- seemed to havo a great aversion to horses, whioh
ho would pursue as rapidly as he was able, being
hoppled with a ohain connecting his tusks with
one of his fore logs. Ho was finally driven
by the crowd into the stone yard, comer of
South and Fourth and Seventh streets. Here a
number of workmen were engaged in dressing
stono, and bad just placed upon wooden horses a
huge stone weighing about fifteen tons. In at
tempting to get out of . the stone yard the ele
phant got caught by his chain to this stono whioh
checked him. The keepers gradually approached
him with chains to fasten his legs, but it wasnot till
ho had received soveral severe blows with spears
that his attention could be divertedso as to render
it possible to further seoure him. Finally, he was
thrown down upon his aide, where he lay for some
tune bellowing and thrashing about him with his
trank. Application wasmade to Hook and Ladder
Companies Nos. 1 and 3, who furnished.thekeepers
with large hooks. One of these was mn through
ono of Ins ears and twisted round until the poor ani
mal could not move his head from pain of the
wound. When ho was perfectly subdued, ho was
heavily bound with chains, and taken back to the
menagerie. He is almost covered with wounds re
ceived from-the hooks and spears, and it is not
deemed safetooxhibithimforafewdays, corwould
it be safe for his keeper to approach within sight of
him. It is a very fortunate circumstance that no
S orson was killed by the olephant, or trampled to
eath in the confusion of esoape: as it is, the poor
animal is the greatest sufferer. This is the largest
elephant that has been exhibited in this part of the
country, and- it is the same that a few years since
oaused such havoo by escaping from his cage at
Harlem. Those fits or angor, if is said, oocur an
nually, and the koopers nave for some time been
expecting some such demonstration, and kept a
more careful watch over him.
Stoking ;a Railroad Jus
tice.—A train on tho Naueatuok (Conn.) Railroad
vra* stoned, on Saturday night week near Derby, a
large atone passing through tho window and striking
a passenger upon tho shoulder. Tho New Haven
Palladium says that the villains who committed
the cowaidly and oriminal sot are known, and one
of them is supposed to have paid the forfeit of his
life for his set. If appears that a few weeks since a
rail was placed upon the track at apoint where, had
it not been discovered by the engineer, tho train
must have' b'pen thrown into the river. A watch
was therefore set at this point/ suspicion being di
rooted against two negro brothers named Oliver and
William Dillon, whohad a grudge against the com
pany on account of a cow belonging to one of them
having been killed by a train upon Jthe road some
time previously. Tho watchman saw the nogroes
throw tho atones, and immediately gave chase, but
they escapod by jumping into thellousatonie river.
One of them is known to have got across the river,
bnt tho other was not soen after he leaped into tho
water, and is supposed to have drowned. The offi
cers are in fwaroh of the survivor.
Singular F*BAK.—James Truesdell, a gen
tleman of sbmo seventy years, Hrm* in Liberty
Pennsylvania, has been for over twelves years past
industriouslv engaged, when the weather and his
health would permit, in digging over a piece of
ground near his dwelling, andf oarrying the stones
and some d{rt into a pile. Here he has labored,
taking one stone or a shovel full of dirt at a time,
until the mound has reaohed the helghtof thirty or
forty feet, and is much larger than his house. He
said as a reason for his labors that ho lost a six
pence in his garden. He soon after found several
sixpences, but continued to dig until bis whole
garden has been carried to inoreaso the mound.
He Is peaceful and industrious in his way. so hie
family let him work. To their offers of assistance
ho gives & decided’ negative, and digs away alone.
Hr. TrueadeU is a well-informed man, and talks
rationally on overy subjeot but his lost sixpence.
Some of tho young,men and young women
of Troy, New York, have formed* themselves into a
skating club, and when the Hudson is frosen over,
they expect to have a happy time. Ladies are ad
mitted into the club upon the proposal of the male
members, each one of whom constitutes himself in
structor, if need be, of the lady proposed. The
olub intend to have a large and spaolous room for
their meetings, with a well famisned drawing-room
attached for the ladies, to be supplied with a libra
ry, the daily papers, Ac., Ac. A uniform, specially
adapted to. tho wants or the ladies, is yet to tie
agreed upon', ■
