SOUTHERN AUTHORESS
NOW READY:
BEULAH,
AUGUBTA J. EVANS, MOBILE, ALABAMA,
One largo And neat duodecimo volume,
PRICE
[From the New York Evening Post.]
.The soeneof this story is laid in'one of the Southern
cities on the Gulf. Beulah, the heroine, is on orphnn of
IheJano Eyre typo, endowed with hucli extraordinary
strength of will and intellect, and so resolute a spirit of
independence, th&t she conquers her way from the dea
tittitiqn and menial duties of childhood tothohieheit
rank in tho literary and social life. Proud, sensitive,
and self-reliant, she spurns nil olTeri of aid nnd protec
tion, the acceptance of which miirbt load tho world to
doubt that she was the author of her own success, and
mHay of hor acts have an appearance of wayward ob
stlnaoy, that make her a pugzfe to her friends. Not the
least sttyinge part of her conduct is her treatment of her
generous, but stern-willed guardian. Dr. Harttroll,
whose hand, notwithstanding her affection for him, she
repeatedly and unaccountably refuses The contrast of
these characters, and the well-plnnnod conflict of wisbos
between them, are represented, with most tffective skill,
and five a continuous and absorbinn interest to the
story. But it is not the importunities of her lover, nor
tho severe experiences of poverty, snd the taunts ?f
vutgnr and ill-bred acquaintances, lit the circles m
which, while pursuing her education, she iscpnipollert
to move, that alone annoy tho heroine. Her acti <e mind
la early perplexed with the thirst for knowledge nnd
skeptical questions, as to the subject ot religion nnd tho
destiny of the soul. Her doubts on the most abstruse
metaphysical problems, she endeavors to satisfy by
study and inquiry, and though she seems to have inns
terod the learning of the proibaadost thinkers on the
subject, she at last finds rest only m the teachings of
Revelation.
Itistheevidonoeof the possession of this learning,
on the part of the writer, not less than the attractions
of the story, that gives interest to the question of au
thorship. The writer, Miss Evans, is a lady of Mobile,
hardly twenty-three years of age, who, it is said, can
fairly lay olairn to the accomplishments and genius
whiob she has bestowed on her heroine, She has , at
any rats established a rank among the best noveltsts of
her sexvthom our country ran boast , and we do not te
mrtnoer any work of Action toAicA has been produced in
this country, for years, which is written with more
power . and is more full of promise, than “ Btulah.”
has achieved a decided literary success, a success
which will, at loast, be as cordially recognised at tho
North os at the South.
