It is admirably situated; on the broci of a bill, and is thus ce the observed of, all observers." It was erected on a large scale, 'worthy of the importance ; of. the State, arid though yet scarcely completed—ter the cbn union between the main building with the de tached executive chambers on .the . left, and the land 'offices, on the right, haeyet to be made—is a very handsOme,,spacious, and convenient• edifice. f • It stands upon a gentle acclivity on the north of the'town, with its principal façade fronting the Susquehanna to the west, the water being seen through State street, a wide: and hand somer avenue. The building is approached, from the streets below; tlirongh handsoMe gates of iron. Already nearly'all the capitol grounds, wbieh are Pleaearitly and tastefully laid o nt,• in a manner which would ,delight an enthusiast in arboriculture, are enclosed with irmfralling. • The main building, which is two storlea high, has. a depth of eighty feet, and a length of one hundred and eighty. But a glance ikom the portico must suffice : g On heaven and on your lady call, And enter the enchanted hall Is, In more prosaic language, push open the en trance door, and find yofirself in the Rotondo ; 'lt is built, as all such edificea are, like the Panthe6n at Rome. From top to bottom it is over one hundred feet high. • Standing on the floor below, as you enter, the Senate Chamber Iles on your left hand, the House of Representatives on the right. In the first sit thirty-three Senators. The Hon, Jowl CanssWEtn, Jr. - , is the efficient 'Chair man, with General WILLIAM H. Minna as Clerk of the .Senate. The room is fitted, up with great taste, containing portraits of PgaN add WAstmidroN, and other works of art. The accommodation for the Senators •is ample and complete, and the outer line of circumvalla tion is fitted up with comfortable Seats , for the public, whenever it- pleases those individual Sovereigns to attend. The Re-' presentative Chamber is as long and high as the Senate Chamber, bnt eleven feet 'wider. This is necessary, as the number of members, over whom Speaker LAWaENOE presided with much suavity and firmness, is one hundred. The desks in the Rouse are'smaller, the seats more crowded. When we were there, a fort night ago, the attendance of the public was much greater In the House than in the Senate.' ,We have to acknowledge courtesies from the Clerks of- both Houses—the Hon. W. H. Mu- Lan, of the Senate, and -the Hon. S. J. REA, of the House. The House of Representatives has alto.' gether a more business-look than the Senate Chamber. We bad the opportunity, during several hours in both Rouses, of particularly noticing the manner in which the Legislature transact bniffiaess at Harrisburg, and of con trasting it with the action of Legislative bodies not only in Europe, but ht Washington and other parts of the 1:Inipl States. The de meanor of the members here is uniformly more respectful and 011ie than in Europe. For example, in the British Parliament every member, bo he Peer or Commoner, may, and generally does, alt with his hat on, exeept when "upon his legs," addressing the Wool sack in the Lorde. or the Speaker in the Com mons. In America, on the contrary, every gentleman who sits in either House, whether as member or spectator, pays respect to the place and to the important duties performed in it, and does not wear his hat. The whole routine of business resembles that in the Bri tish Parliament, except that it is more care fully done at Harrisburg, and that the pre siding officer in each House, with Its; seems more thoroughly wide awake than the Lord Chancellor in the House of Peers and the Speaker in the House of Commons. With us, every thing seems to have a more earnest aspect, as if the members thought that they bad a special purpose—of doing business. A remarkable object efinterest in the Holm of Representatives is the Speaker's chair—a plain, massive chair—slightly Carved, and sur mountedatthe summit efthe back with the Phu:. gian cap of liberty. In that chair, when the De claration of Independence was. adopted, and the champions of freedom assembled in our State House, in Philadelphia, on the memo rable Fourth of July, 1778, sato Jews I:JAN (3OK, when he signed that memorable pledge, by which the subscribers were mutually pledged to each other, on their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. In that chair sate Jona lleraicx, when, as President of the Continental Congress, be signed the commissions of GIIGHGE WASHINGTON and the gallant Larayarrx. Ia that chair, February, 1825, when he revisited this country, full of years, and honors, also, sate LAVATETTE him self. Surely such a chair is of more real inte rest, even as a historical relic, than the proud est throne in Christendom. The State Library and other public offices, in the Capitol, would afford temptation to a more lengthened visit than we now can make. But we hasten, the day being line , and the skies cloudless, to mount to the _Outer gallery of the Rotundo, when as splendid a parioramie view, of mountain, valley, cultiiated land, and rapidly flowing can be obtained as eye could desire to dwell upon, or thought to muse over. The Northern wing of the Capitol—isolated as yet, but certain ; to be cue day united with the main building—contains the Executive Department, and other °Mee. A bill to regu thte the trade in, keg Oysters has been passed through the Senate, and awaits action in the House. The daring reckless cit'sen who ant " Stripped the Pettey oyster of his coat, And thrust the living morsel down his throat," ; Little thought, after having accomplished that gratify log feat, that the honorable "the Senate and Assembly of the State," would by and by come to the conclusion that that satisfactory blialve was worthy of legislative honors.
