' Tor many irionth# my halt had been faltfng off, until
I was fearful of losing it entirely. The skin upon my

By the advice of my phystolan, to whom yon had

iy~==»To tho Philanthropic.—The undersigned,
Ix 3 commonly known as 808 BUTT< a slave, aged
' 43 years, owned In Portsmouth, Virginia, and now In
this city by permission of bis master, is earnestly
anxious to free himself, and his wife and two children,
from servitude, and bogs leave to appeal to the well
known generosity of tho people of this great city for
assistance, -
The undersigned is a sexton, undertaker, and grave
digger, and as such, it was his melancholy duty to dig
the graves and bury 1,169 of the inhabitants of Ports-,
mouth, In the short space of about seven weeks, in the
aumtnerof 18$6, when tho yellow fever desolated that
afflicted town.
How these bQmble but arduous duties were regarded.
by his own people, may be known by the following ex
tract from the report of the Portsmouth Relief Asso
ciation :
“ And then we had to make provision for the burial
of the dead. In this last sad duty, the Association waa
materially assisted by the indefatigable and truly praise*
worthy exertions of one of our colored population,
familiarly known as Bob Butt. This humble negro, in
hia line, perlormed duty beyoud all price. From morn
till night he labored at hla spade, and frequently made
the grave-yardhis resting place. Under file direction
and superintendence, all who died of the ferer were de
cently committed to their mother earth.”
The undersigned la happy to be able to state, that the
estimation in which he is held at home has prompted
the master of himself and biß family to abate at feast
osa-HALr of the moneyed value they would command,
and that us boa earned aud saved about one-fifth of the
aum which will bo required for the purchase of him
self and family; and, furthermore, that the ladies, and
gentlemen of Portsmouth will, In some public manner,
or otherwise, assist him liberally In his efforts to pur
chase the freedom of himself and family, should he, on
bis return home, be able to show them that, by the kind
ness of the people of this gteat city, the sum remaining
to be raised is within the means or nls own small town.
It is the earnest hope and prayer of the undersigned
that he may be able to return to Portsmouth with as
surances that he and his family will soon he free.

The undersigned having been practically engaged for
a number of years in different capacities of the Insu

exclusively for the Insurance Companies—now offers his
services to those sustaining Loss or Damage by Fire to
property insured, in making out their proofii of such

cunning conditions of Policies of Insurance, in suoh a
manner as to obviate plea or exonse for reduction or
litigation by companies so inclined, or others.
He is assisted by tbe beat legal counsel in Philadel

tion of Olsims against Insurance Companies.
It is known by many who have sustained loss by Fire
to property insured, and it has also been the experience
of the undersigned, that policies are frequently declared
partially or entirely void at a certain time after a fire
occurs, in consequence of carelessness or mismanage

which, although an important fact, is scarcely ever dla
covered or thought of, until it is too late. In order to
avoid suoh disastrous occurrences, the undersigned
will also effeot Insurance in any Companies desired,
and examine policies effected by others (in most oases)
free of extra oharge.
Parties sustaining loss or damage by fire, as above,
will find it to their interest to oonsult the undersigned
as soon after the fire as possible.
