Extract of a Letter from an Officer on board the United

“ I was shown, at the Mission, the portrait of Mrs.
Hoffman, the wife of a missionary who once was sta*
tioaed there. She came out young, besutl'ul, and
good, one of God’s fairest and best ereatuiys, with the
detei mlnatlon to devote her life to the Improvement of
these poor heathea. And so she did—and go *he died.
Only a few years after aho arrived she was seized with
the fever, and perished I stood and gazed at her pic*
tuts for an hour, aud could read her history in her
face. All that was feminine, delicate, refined, retiring,
and lovely was expressed in her sweet, soft eyes; and
about her mouth there was suoh an expression of will,

thinking what a perfect character for a missionary to

TO-MORROW; WEDNESDAY,
. “ the HUGUENOTS.*’
The Bale of Beats commences this morning.
TO THB PUBLIO.
With the Huguenots, Mr. Ullmaa hopes to establish
his claims upon the undivided patronage of the enlight
ened and musio-loving eftisani of Philadelphia. Fami
liar with what has been done before. In this city, he
boldly challenges comparison with any similar under
taking. He means,to produce u Grand Opera” as per
fect as it can be possibly given, and he coea not doubt
that the public will award him the merit of having ful
filled his promise to the utmost of his ability.
He once mere calls upou the publie and the press for
the most extensive support acd patronage. A d’sap
pointment in this respect would be ruinous to him, and
di«cournge him from continuing his exertions, as he
has dene. The risk attending hoy operatic enterprise*
ie proverbial. Tbiarbk is greater with him than with
aur other manager, for none had the courage to make
•ueh nuifierous and great engagements, and to transfer
such an immense establishment from one city to the
other. He la happy to say that the prospects thus far
are brilliant beyond expectation.
As regards - the Huguenots, Mr. UUm&n particularly
calls attention to the manner in which the opera is
got up, and to the cast.
“THE “ MARCEL” OF TOSHES .
Enjoys aßaropesn reputation of the highest degree.
It is ufs very greatest p *t, ani he hse been proclaimed _
by Meyerbeerhimself. the greatest living representative
of the Huguenot S-ildier.
MAD’LLE ROIN9OT
Made her debut in New York, u'ider the most unfavo
rable Circumttineee, as Valentine,’and achieved the
most triumphant success, the more triumphant as A
was unexpected.
„ MADAME LABORDB
Will again appear in Pbilade’phia, where she has
achieved Her first triumphs, eeieral yeaia ago. She
waa, at that time, &ttta*y-ry beginning of her career,
and yet the furore she created still lives in the memory of
opura-goeri Since then, she has song in the principal
European Theatres, and lately concluded a five ye art*
engagement at the Grand Opera House, for Vfhleh
MhYKRHkER composed hit greit worka. She is now
considered as the greatest living Bravura Singer, and
while her voice has gained strength, ithas loetnothing
of freshness.
The other very numerous Boles will be found to be la
COMPETENT HANDS.
THE HUGUEKOT3 will be succeeded on
