thoroughly tried; some hundreds of the machines arc
in use in ait the care of some of our best managed Hies;
and it is the opinion of all who have examined it that
it will be unlversallyused. It is offerel on the meat

RAILROAD DANGEHS.—For tho last twenty years,
or perhaps sinoe the system of Railroads has been es
tablished in this there have, Inail probability,
boon losses bv ao Ident to the extent of twenty millions
ofooUars. These have been dear, absolute losses to
the community—as much so as property destroyed by
Are or sunkin the ocean. But these disasters have been
of a peculiar character, and, in the main, not those or
fire or Aral; they have arisen from the ordinarj con
ditions of a railroad train in progress; .they' have been
caused by tho inherent momentum that is a necessary
property of great mass»sof matter in motion. ;
A Railroad Train is exposed to peculiar danger from
this cause. Its track of irqa and level grade are' both
made for the purpose of allowing Its free progress, and
the very ease and freedom of motion aggravate the danger
of momentum.
Again, a Railroad is Intended aa a means of rspid
tranilt for persot a and property, and the component
parts of a locomotive &od ears for travel on rails rapidly,
are made necessarily heavy and strong—lf otherwise,
they would soon shake to pieces. It follows, then; that
weight, eve of motion, freedom from obstruction, and
rapid transit, all conduce powerfully to create toomen
turn Prom accurate caloulatioQß it is found that the
effective momentum of a train of six car/and an engine
is equal to ft force of 700 tons. • The.truth of this state
ment is painfully se f-evidentat a sudden cpl isloj or
obstruction. This FEARFUL DANGER WELCH IS
EVER PBB9SNT to ft tra la is only partially recognised
by Railroad officials. It js, however, understood to
somo extent, and each car is provided witb brakes, or
blocks, arranged to press agaicst tho wheels by the
action of the brahemao. This plan works very well for
the usual stoppages of a train, when sufficient notice is
given to the brakemau by the engineer; but for those
eases of danger which have arisen, and will arise, in
spite of the most rigid scrutiny, it is notoriously ini ffl
eient.asall experience proves.
It is of no use for an officer to Bay that nothing can
happen to.“ our” train There is not a moment th t
strain is In motion but that it is exposed to dangers
which a perfect control would prevent, and there should
net ba an Instant of time in which a train is running,
but that the facilities should be at band for an Instant,
simultaneous and powerful application of the retirdirg
appliances of every car
It is not the custom on nuny roads to employ more
than one brakoman to two or three cars, and on some
not more than one to four or five cars The laws of
some States require a brakemau ti each two cars We
hold that there should be one to every car, and that a
meohaoieal brakemau is vastly more reliable than one
of Aeshaudblool.
During the last few years an invention has been made
and perfected by the undersigned, the object of which
Is to place all the braking appliances of a train in reali
ness for prompt and united action. The closest atten
tion that we have been able to bring to bear on this sub
ject, and an analysis of the various accidents that have
occurred* lead most conclusvely to this result, viz':
that the means should always beathandthrongnouttbe
train to arrest the momentum at every point where it
exists; 2 That the engine man, from his station, gene
rally sees tbe obstruction or danger first, consequently
heihou'-dbe enabled, of bis own volition, to apply in
an inßtant every b-ake; 8. The liability to accidents
Jrombioskit£oiwheels, axles,rails, chairs, accidental
separations, and defections at various points on the
'train ronder it of the first importance that every bar
should have its own retarding appliances perfectly Jade
' pendent in aotion of any other. Hundreds of contri
vettoes have been made in the way of continuous brakes,
nooe of which have ever attained a perfect success—the
necessary complicity of adjustment, and the total failure
of such a contrivance, often at the very moment when
most needed, ore Insuperable obstacles to the success of
such a device as a means of guarding against, aud miti
gAtingall the accidents to which a train is expos d. The
invention referred to consistsin the attachment of a re
served power to the brakes of each-car, placing them
all in readiness for united action, either from the en
gine or any point on the train A desoripti nof thu
mechanism is unnecessary at this place; suffice it to
say, it is extreme y simple, and perfectly efficient, and
full and detailed engravings and description may be
found in our circulars, to be had on application at our
office.
There another, and perhaps the strongest, point jm
favor of the adoption of this precaution-namely, >;s
great cheapness. For instance, take a road owning, sty,
fifty cars: the fir. t cost, at our present price, would bo j
$6,*250; the interest on this amount at 7 (or say 9 per 1
cent , which is nearer the rats that railroad companlos |
pay for the us •of money) is $502 per year. A company I
having this attachment to their oars would save the |
wages of at least three brakemon, which would bo, say,
fPDO a year; while the simple insurance against acci
dent to life and propetty which such ft precaution would ;
give would be worth at least half the cost of the im- I
provemeht. We submit that we make out a strong oaso j
in faTor of the adoption of such a security. And now, 1
then, in conclusion; we add that some hundreds of these
Machines are In use in the United States, and they are
on the whole passenger stock of all tho following roads,
to any or all ol the officers of which we refer all parties
interested, in place of-certificates, of which we hate
plenty: Hudson River, Cleveland and Toledo, Terio
Haute and Richmond, Old Colony and Fall River, Michl
ohigan Central, Panama, &o. Further than thie : We
will furnish the maohines for ALL TUB PASSENGER
AND BAGGAGE CABS OF ANYROAD, AND GIVE
KAOH COMPANY FOR ITSELF THE OPPORTU
NITY TO TEST ITS TALUS, FRBB OF CHARGE.
WE WILL GIVE FOUR MANTAS’ TRIAL BEFORE
SETTLEMENT, AND EAOH COMPANY BHALL BE
ITS OWN JUDGE OF ITS VALUE. Can WE do more
than this? And does not every officer assume ft FEAR
FUL RESPONSIBILITY who neglects for a' moment
such an offer? We do not make this offer as mere mean
ingless talk, but WE MEAN IT JUST EX&OILYAS
IT IS EXPRESSED. This device will give an amount
of security to a train that is impossible wi hout it; aud
no company need Bftf We knorf nothing about it.” or
