WEDNESDAY; SEPTEMBER 8,1868
rrophemes of Science—No. is
On-Friday laid, the municipality, of Jersey
City gave a splendid dinner to Captain ii:llD
-13011 and the other officeri,orthe'ffiagara.. It
was,' In every respect, an : entertainment wor
thy of the highly distinguished guests—with
two small Mistakes. First, the invitation
named four as the hour when -the dinner
should commence; while the party did not sit
down to table until after seven. Secondly, by
some mistake, ladies were not alloWed to be
present, evert 'as spectators. In FMnce, on
such an 'occasion, the fair sex would have
been included in, the • invitation, and have
graced the entertainment.by partaking' of the
repast. . ;
After Captain HUDSON'S health was honored,
with all the enthusiasm elicited by a great
deed successfully'perfbrined, the company had
the gratification of bearing a short, sensible
speech from that distinguished. gentleman.
He expressed his delight at a compliment
paid . to QUeen VICTORIA, whom he justly
eulogized as an excellent sovereign and
a very exemplary wife and mother, and
particularly , praised her for assistance
rendered, by her Government, to the
great experiment of laying the ~.'^Atiaptic,
Cable. • 4i Orders were given ; _,thrOughout her
dominions," 'paid Captain - Gummi, «to admit
us 'to the dock.yards, and to do every thing
for us that wo required 'to have' done. , They
.went farther tlien-lbat—liberties and privi
leges and 'free access Were given in the navy
yards to every officer of the , .American ships—
finch privileges as were not allowed to their
'own officers. I believe that there is a feeling
throughout England more favorable 'towards
America than.we in this country imagine or
believe. They have evinced it in all their in
tercourse with us, in . their, courtesies,- their
hospitalities. They have left no Steno- lin.:
turned, no -measurenittried,:for the purpose
of making us feel at honie. We were, at
home. 'We kiieW no distinction, save that we
had• not our families immediately aroundms.!
We supposed at first, and it may have been
the case, that England was a little joalyus of
America. She may have been jealous, brit it
was the -jealousy of a.. gay widow towards her
own daughter, when she thinks ' that the
daughter receives the attentions-which should
be paid to herself. Bat she loved her daugh
ter, and the English people love us. Ido not
stpnd here' as the :apologist of Great Britain.
I stand here simply to reader her that justice,
Which is her due. In the `work of laying this
cable we have, done 'simply our duty. I say
We—the credit belongs to' the engineers, the
officers and the men. "We', have not stood
alone. We knew.no England and no Ame
rica-in the duties between the iNVO squadrons."
_ All this was received, by a large company,
with . great *ileum). The speaker then pro
ceeded thus:; - _
" GENTLEMEN : Wo talk a good deal of Memo,
Science is to be honored.- honor it. - adds to
the happiness of mankind anti- to the improve
ment of the age in which we . live. Science Is well
worthy our homage anti praise. But we must not
stop hero. Look at: what :has been done by the
scientific world of London. - At- the last yearly'
meeting ofthe'savana of London the gold - medal
was given for the best paper that hod been read.

To be sure, that was rather a miscalculation
on the part of Science, which has a trick of
playing the braggart very largely, at times,
and of 'venturing upon all sorts of prophecy
legs—which 'never, turn ; out truly, .by any
chance. Not; to go very far back, we CAL

'Railwayism, first ventured to broach .the theory
that steam locomotives could run upon , iron
roads, with a speed much exceeding that of
horses, Science gravely dente d the fact, and
tried to veto the whole affair, contending that,
on a uniformly-smooth surface, such as a rail,
there would be no ‘c purchase" for the wheels,
which would revolve round and round, with
out' any power orpromilsion. But, said Sci
ence, represented by Mr. Goanswonvnx Gun-
YET, (a great civil engineer, and inventor of the
Bode Light,) place your steam locomotiVes on
ordinary turnpike roads, which will resist the
wheels and gtvd them "purchase," and there
will bo famous steam coachinfNill at once.
Mr. GURNEY made repeated' experiments on
common roads, and always went within an
inch of succeeding; but, just at that point, his
steam coach would stand still, or burst its
boiler, or something of the kind. Science,
nothing daunted by such a trifle as utter fail
ure, soon rallied, and said that roughness of
surface was essential to produce bite;" that
the wheels of a locomotiie could not go on
without this bito. Science confounded rough
ness' of surfaao with tenacity of surface and
tenacity of parts ; not perceiving that a yield
ing surface, which would not adapt itself to
the tread of the wheel, could never become an
unyielding surface to form a fulerim for its
prOgression.
In 1820, one Thomas Garr wrote a book
repeating the suggestion, which *others had
made before, of a general iron railway, all
over England, ;by employing cog-wheel en
gines on cog-wheeled railroads. Here again
science erred. Had the double cog been
used, the rate of speed could scarcely have
been seven miles an hour, through the jolting
and friction they would have caused.
When the Liverpool and Manehester rail-
Way was projected, in 1821, STEPHENSON alrea
dy had a steam locomotive, running on such a
rail as is now used, at the rate of six miles an
hour. Science declared that this must be the
maximum ; it had previously declared that any
running whatever upon a level-rail was impos
sible. Indeed, it declared, that the weight of
the locomotive would prevent its moving upon
any road. In 1824, Mr. MacranEN, of Edin
burgh, who confidently spoke of locomotives
running 20 miles an hour, and even yet more
rapidly, was ridiculed as a crazy enthusiast.
In 1823 the Quarterly Review declared that
the distance between Liverpool and Man
chester, now ran in an hour and oven less,
could barely be covered within the day, that
nothing could be ti more palpably absurd and
ridiculous l than the prospect hold out of loco.
motives travelling twice as fast as stage
coaches, and that eight or nine miles an hour
was as much as could be ventured on with
safety.
That erudite man of science, Dr. Marrying
LAIIHNEIt, emphatically declared—a little be
fore the fact defeated all his speaulations—
that et carriages could not go at any thing like
the contemplated speed; if driven to it, the
wheels would merely spin on titer axles, and
the carriages would stand stock-still."
Before Parliament, Mr. STEPHENSON him
self, to obtain a hearing, had to limit his ex
pectation of speed to ten miles an hour, and
a public funCtionary of that day said that if a
locomotive ever did go at that speed tt he
would oat a stewed engine wheel to his break
fast." This was in 1825. Ekactly four years
later, GEORGE STEPUENSON'S locomotive,
The Rocket," actually travelled at the rate
of 85 miles an hour. Several years after, it
reached a speed of' nearly 60 miles an hour.
Tho doubting gentleman never turned np, we
believe, to claim the stowed engine -wheel for
his breakfast.
Even'after Railwayism was an established
thing, the celebrated Dr. LARDNER—the ve
ritable Dr. Diabolus ' Gander, of Warren's
"Ten Thousand a-Year"—again put himself
forward, and again put llla foot in
. it. When
the Box Tunnel was projected, on the Great
Western Railway, (between London and Bris
tol,) out came bold LartnuEn with a pamph
let, to show that the' destruction of the atoms.
pherio air in the tunnel would kill the travel
lers—that the stoke would- produce carbonic
acid gas, which no ventilation could make
innocuous—that, in the Box Tunnel particu
larly, the passage of a load of ono hundred
tons would deposit 8,090 pounds of noxious

Of the 470 slaves shipped, it appears that 160

Dolphin's men 'were confident of a capture, and
this confidence was increased - when it became
evident that: they were rapidly gaining on the

on the deck of the Echo After a chase

EXECU T lON AT WITEBLING.-Our Wheeling ex
changes bring us full details of the execution of,
John Burns, in that city, on Friday, for the Mur
der, in May last, of Mary Monotony. Our readers
will recollect the circumstances under which the
murder was committed. The girl was an aban
doned outcast, and ho beat her brains out with a
stone, and submitted her 'remains to indignities,
the very'regolleation of which makes us shudder.
The execution took place on a hill overlooking
Wheeling, and in view of the 'scene of the murder.
It was witnessed by fully ten thousand people, of
whom, shame that we should have to write it, fully
one-third wore women.
The first demonstration in the present can
vass in New York city against the attempt of the
Administration to force a Lecompton Constitution
Upon the people of Kansas, and in fever of the
enactment of legal measures to preserve the inte

was filled by leading citizens of all parties favor
able to the s e ntiments of the call. Speeches were
made by Wm. M. Everts, Eaq , and the Hon. Ja
cob Broome of Boonsylvanta. The greatest en
thusiasm prevailed, and everything seems to indi
cate n union of the honest men of the Democracy,
the neptibliene, afidtthe Americans in a oommon
Catlett.
Mr. William E. Everett, chief engineer of
the Atlantic cable expedition, arrived in Oswego,
N. Y., on Monday evening: Ho wan on a visit
to hia mother, who resides in that city. He was
received by an Immense concourse of citizens,
