Ad : these 'Nerds, side the speaker, was con

substance of all evangelical, preaching-, •
To briritsords'to repentance through faith
in Christ embraced the whole scope of. what=
the preaching of the Goirpel was, :Intended, to
accomplish:. , • . .
This : Scripture was at once simple and Com.
prehensive, and suggested itself to our, re
flection the source and spring •of every
Christian duty.l, The scope and character of
these cardinal - nssentials—repentauce ;sing'
faith—were -enlarged upon- by the.sflaer

Were inseparable Annul, from the fact that re
pentane° and faith, to be per
fect,,nedessarily qnbluded repentance re
pentaceimplied perifying and, renewing of
the heart ; and,one,ot themost essential con=
clitions of alreei faitlfwas a sincere Sorrow for
all our sins.- • _
To be more explicit, however, be wished to
invite the attention of his hearers to a sepa
ratertonsideratiom of both - these terms.
I - First, Repentance toward. God—its nature
and character... • • -
He was sorry to say in - the outset that very
much that passed for repentance was not really
worth the name. There, was, for example,. a
show of, or:counterfeit repeatance, often in-.
duced by tionble3 - iirringht on by temporal ,
misfortune; and thie, proof of such repeittaitee
not heingsenolne was - had ha the fact.that. at
the return of prosperity it was frequently dis
pelled like the early, cloud - or the morning
dew. This was a mere lip repentance.- True
repentance, on the other hand, was manifested
In a thorough reformation of' and,a re
newing of,the heart. ' It caused its possessor
to hate the guilty ways be once loved, - and
made him sorrow • over • the garments 'once
spotted by, the flesh. The yearning of the
truly penitent was ever toward a holiness in
compatible with the 'carnality of earth,,end it
was in the possession' Of this that the pilgrim
was ready to exclaim withrani, " 0, wretched
man that I amf who shall deliver me from the
body of this- death I" - . - Such , was ever the
bumble sorrow ,breathed from the contrite
spirit of the truly penitent.
Another remark respecting this repentance
was, that it must be toward god—the • triune
Jehovah: It was his grace that had..been
neglected—his majesty that had boon dla
honored. - Joseph was tempted, b 1
answer was, "How can I &this; rest wicked
ness, and sin against God .
So ' David's re
morse' his sense of; Vitt was, net wward man
whom he had wronged, but toward his Maker.
"Against thee, thee only,, have I Binned, and
done this evil in'thy eight ; that thou mighteat
Bo justified when thou speakest, and be clear
'when thou judgest."
Inasmuch, then, as God-was or parer eyes
than to behold iniquity, it was evident that we
could, only come throngh , the intereertalon of a
Mediator, which, of course, implied the aces=
aity of repentance.- -
In
the second pima, it Watt manifest from
this mediator's/ necessity that, faith. toward
the Lord Jesus ,C4riefoivas tie essentialis Tee
pentance toward 'God, and so' Weenie there
was no other name given under. bee.ien where-.
by men Can be saved. -There was no other
way than through Christ. His own deelka
tion to this effect was, -"I am the way, the
truth, and the life." " ' '
lint, alas! there Were leo many who bad
not . this faith, who were still "without hope
and Ivithont God in the-world." There were
too many lifeless Christians who had "but a
name to live," and whose bud would be that
of the tires separated fromthe wheat.
The laith•which was of the heed merely,
nod not of the heart,
,was a dead and barren
faith ' having no' visible effect upon the life.
Such,a faith believed the historic facts which
are written of Christ,
.but felt no' abiding In
terest in the health of the soul. It took for
granted that. the Bible was a holy bookthe.
result of divine inspiration, &c., -yet alloWed
VlLLcoyietion to exercise no moulding info
-
He bleated God, however, that - liter , •
living and a tinitiul faith ; and who could sum
the incalculable blessings which that faith
- was conferring upon man I It was this faith
that, brought the contrite soul to the " foun
tain ,oponed. for sin .and uncleanness,"'and
that said effectually " wash and be' clean."
It was a faith that 'delighted to walk in the
Lord's footsteps—to obey his precepts, and to
seek conformity to his image: It made it a
man's meat and drink to do the Lord's will in
acts of goodness. This Waa'a justifying faith,
and taught the people of hiti, choice a perfect
- reliance upon their Saviour. -
-Ile had now endeavored to draw an outline
of those two important words 'to every Chris
tian—repentance and faith—feeling, indeed,
that much more could be said upon a theme
so noble' in its/tearing, even .ho shrank
from - the task, under the consciousness 'of his
Own inability to AO fullinstlee to' itnineilts.
Tie was - now ready , for the app . iicittion'of the
subjectpreeente& lirthe - text ; and he would
.ask,‘Vo4 not an important question for alt
to ans w er-in their own hearts 'whether they
were the possessors of. such a repentance
toward - God as they hadjuSt heard described,
and such a faith'in the Tsirid
He was a stranger among those he was ad
dressing; and hence could not speak from per
sonal knowledge as to whether there 'were any
before him who would have to return a - nega

He appeared beforeiliem as Christ's ambas
sador, with the word of Inspiration, tiara pray
you in Christ'satead, beye'reConciled to God."
There might be those who felt disposed to
ha
zard the chance of patting off.the overtures of
God's mercy, butthey were not acting wisely in
this matter. To delay was to run the risk of
eternal 1%1114' and•whY, aboie all things else;
should a man thus voluntarily endanger the
immortal soul t The day of salvation was but
temporary to every one, Even at that instant
the voice of inspiration was • sounding the'
Warta, I , to-day, if ye will hear his voice, hard
en not your hearts cc tcl4ay is the day of
salvation:,
Ho ,entreated all to think of the easy terms
of mercy thus offered to all who saw proper to
accept them, and then of the awful condition
of a soul in a state of:hopeless final exclusion
from . the face of_God forever and ever.
With this sad picture - -on the one band, and
an eternity of bliss neon the other, it ought
surely not take any one long to decide as to
what was his -interest In choosing between
tbe two. - • - •
And now, to hint who was ready to exclaim,
"what mnst I do to be saved 1" he would say
come trembling itinfier;lcra*Saviour's 'Cross--
to the, Lbrd Jesus, and live forever.- Then
would the pardoned sinner's hope be his hope,
