Mr. ULLMAN respectfully inform, the public that,
after mature consideration, he has arrived at the con
clusion that, in spite of the certainty of full houses, it
is utterly impossible to continue the Opera in Philadel
phia without a heavy lees, unless the prices be the same
hero as in New York, Boston and all other cities, as they
have always been, and as It is customary in all Opera
blouses of Europe, viz t ace extra charge of fifty cents
for choice of seats during tke day.
Mr. Rihnen need not allude to the fact that the great
number of celebrated artistes engaged by him have in
creased his nightly expenses beyond what they have
ever been ; that in addition to those he has to pay for
rent gas, and fires upwards of 31,000 per week; that
the railroad expenses for ea many people—going tad
coming—transportation of wardrobe and properties,
*mount to a considerable sum; that arming the time he
plays In Philadelphia he has to pay the rent fur the
New York Academy of liduejet, swelling the gross total
amount to nearly seven thousand dollars per week. Bat
he simply wishes to state, on full authority, and with
out the slightest fear of contradiction, notwithatarding
ell rumors to the contrary, that even the first opening
xenon at the American Academy or Music last Febru
ary did not leave any profit to the Lessee andlianagers,
so spite of an operatic excitement, a repetition or which
Is not nt bli probable, and a list of expenses fully 88 per
cent. lege than what they are at present.
Under these circumstances, Mr. Ullman him not the
slightest doubt that the well-known libertine of the
Philadelphia public, and the good sense of this comma
