Owing to the commencement of some litigation
between the city of San Francisco and the Board
of Funded . Debt Commissioners, it had been de
termined for the present to pay the interest on the
San Francisco bonds at the office of the City Tree
enrethere, insteadef sending' the money to New
York, as heretofore, for this purpose. Persons at
the East holding Ban Francisco bonds had best pay
attention t° this fact, and 'eend their coupons here
for.collection in due time. • . '
Some laborers boring an artesian well 'in the
yard of the United States Marine Hospital in this
city, when the anger had penetrated to a depth of
275 feet, struck an auriferous' stratum which was
found' 'to: be pretty rich in the precious metal.
Some, dirt .brought up by the auger was washed
out and found to contain about ten eentamorth of
gold. The news of this discovery caused some talk
in this oily. "
The French frigate La 'Perseverante is Mill ly
ing in our harbor. She is to sail for South Amami

French Benevolent Society was laid on the 22d of
November. Admiral Lugeol and Consul Gautier
assisted at the ceremonies.
The death of Consul Dillon was heard with
much regret by our French population. Consul

grand requiem and mass will be performed for
the repose- of his lout,

The United States Circuit Court has decided
that the steamers Cortes, Brother Jonathan, Pa
°lb, and Untie Sam' belong to Cornelius Vander
bilt. Garrison- has appealed to the United Stotts
Supreme Court. - - -
Ex-Treasurer Henry Bates has had another inef
fectual trial for embesslin the public, funde. It
isropenly charged that the j ury was spooked one
the Sheriff laving been al owed to select a num
ber of Bate's' friends and former associates, instead
of drawingthe names of the jurymen from the box,
ea Is provided by law. - Since the result of this
second trial Bates hat been granted a change of
venue, on the ground that the people of Saeramen
to have been biased against him by, the prem. The
ease has been transferred to Placer county. While
the trial wash progress the editor of the Snore
remit° Bee having indu lged' in some severe stric.

empanneled, was cited by the presiding Judge,
Beard, to appear and answer for contempt After
continuing the case once or twice, Judge Heard
finally concluded to recede, and discharged the

'James Hennessy; one of those banished by the
Vigilance Committee,les begun an action against
certain members of that Committee in the District
Court of Sierra county, for 125,000 damages.

of Oregon; officiated on the occasion:

some parts of the State asking for the enactment of
a Sunday law.
The miners in some parts of the State are be
coining greatly dissatisfied at the presence- of
Chinamen. Those In the neighborhood of San
Andras,.Cfdavoras county, lately - met together and

man should be allowed to work in that neighbor.

The Indians on some of the reservations in this

fail about three hundred acres of land; and before

English atudies, with Latin, or one of the modern

pleted the partial course.
The pupils are received into the family of the Princi
pals, in which every arrangement Is made for their
physical education, and the improvement of their man
ners and morals. They occupy private rooms, two in
each, the rooms of the female teachers and that of an

years, and has always been profitable to reorient pro
prietors, but has never been worked for any length of
time with an engine and machinery. The shafts end
gallerlee are well constructed, the otoppinge have never
been taken out, and from 60 to 75 miners can be profit

a formidable vein of copper and lead, which has never
been worked, and a new gold vein ban boon discovered
since the &et of thls month, at which three men have
