'be struck with the novel idea of ascribing the
issuing and circulation of small -notes to pro
videntiadauthority, as is indicated in the fore
going extract, we have already had en
couragfug evidence of the truth of its closing

the banks in some of our less orderly sister
cities, g., Now York and Boston.]
The cteiclusion of this discourse was mainly
devoted to -the praiseworthy efforts on the
part of individuals, cities, States, and even the
nation, to afford relief to the needy in these
trying times by supplying them with Femme

The Howard and Dorcas Associations,
springing up upon every hand, were considered
as the crowning result of our difficulties, and
elicited.from the speaker a generous appeal to
his hearers in their behalf.
Taking it all in all, the speaker said he was
ctfrank to confesii that so far as numerous
cases of extreme 'destitution .were concerned,
he beliOved this would be the most auspicious
winter our city-and country had ever known ;"
