The Railroads and the Pressure.
As times wears on it is found that the lending
railroads; which have been nbuied is mincing the
present convulsion in the money market, are not
the only parties in fault, and that the debts due
by the roads to banks are much safer than the
debts due by merchants. The aggregate of sae.
pended debts of railroads is quite small, tbo, when
compared with the debts of merchants :

Were it not for, the roads of IlOnois, Ohio,: and
the grand trunk routes leading from New York to
Chicago and the Ohio river, we should be obliged,
in addition to our present disasters, to import
breodatubre as in 1837: Instead of this, the roads
are now in a position where for six months they
oan not only supply the domestic wants for bread,
but enable us to send abroad millions of dollars'
worth, at a profit.—N. Y. Express.
Railroad `Matters.—The monthly statement
of the North Pennsylvania Railroad, for October,
is quite satisfactory, and shows conclusively that
itasmportanee to our city and State is being felt.
The increased • receipts over the same month last
year were 420,936.66, and for the, ten months the
increase was $154,190.07, as will be seen by the
following table of receipts,:

The coal tonnage of the road during October was
9,80817 tons. and since ambit of January 35,569 05
tons—an excess of 5,569 05 tone over the estimate
for the entire year. The probabilities are that the
aggregate tonnage for the year will snmup 46,000
tone—nearly gamma/ as the Reading Railroad coal
tonnage in 1842. The company has added another
ooal-burningfreight locomotive to its rolling stook,
which will enable them to make bettor provisions
for moving freight: • -

The Philadelphia and Sunbury Railroad, 'ex
tending from Sunbury to Mt. Carmel, in Northum
berland county. has been sold, under a sheriff's
execution, to t. S. Whelan, of Philidelphia, to
gether with seven
,tracts of !Mal land, containing
about three thousand acres, on which are erected
the "Lancaster Colliery" and, other improve
ments, and also al l - the 'locomotive engines and
oars The sale was subject to a thet mortgage of
$700,000 arid a second mortgage of 500,000. The
road is abed 30 miles in length, and is very well ,

Norfolk, Is orembor , l2.—The schooner Nebraska, WO
tons register, from Philadelphia to Washington, with a
cargo of coal, touched on Hogg Island. and a heavy
sea running at the 'time, and blowing herd, she struck
twice very heavily, which caused her to spring a leak
They endeavored to get into Hampton Nolan, but,
notwithstanding every eitertion waif made, the water
rapidly gained on them, end the schooner finally magic
on the 11th list, when between Willoughby's light
boat and Old Point Comfort, In three fathoms of water.
The captain end crew left in the boat, and have arrived
here. No insurance on the schooner.
