committee could do nothing for him, he replied that
he was informed that they could, and had been re

He further stated that two men called at the

SHOP • usual at thliseasen of the
pier, the annoyance of this • kind'or petty thieving is
beginning to be ailnenit'daily occurrence:' It lea feet
that we have noticed ter years put, that this villainous
game is inlfeenily practised more from about the first of
November until after New Year's, than at any other
season of the year. Thole are probably two reasons to;
this first, Ufa the Season in which our retail merchants
(upon Which clime thee° depredations are mostly prac
tised) are generellyoery busy withonstomers, mid make
profuse and , very tempting displays of their goods in
side, and not unfrequently on the street i and, in the
second place, it is the season in which those who are
habitually la want feel more keenly the necessity of mak
ing provision for their bodily needs.
The history of shoplifting has, however, unfolded the
fact 'that it is by no means, in all cases, the prompt
ing' of necessity that impels those who practice it, as
oases have been brought to our notice whore shops for
retailing goods were carried on, of which the stock in
trade copshited wholly of tbe booty that was thus ac
cumiilated feme day' to day by those prowling sharks.
The present feeling, and which
,has already been too
much augmented by certain rinwlse demonstrations, will
most likely • increase the difficulty this Ammon, Inas
much as necessity, with some periwigs, will be made the
scapegoat ter every conceivable vielatieh of right.
Another reason, probably, why the season already
designated is morn noted for this speedos of thieving Is,
that coorweather Is a -very reasonable plea for wearing
large shawls and capacious cloaks, and these articles of
dregs ere indispensable shields for those whO refry on
this pilfering art:. The' hate& will, of coarse, pardon
this imputation upou the shay— shawl-wearing sex we
Were about to say, but that nowla-days would form no
distinction. They will beav'ila witness, however, as
their shopping experlimee furnished the very best crite
rion, that women wearing monstrous big shawls, in
moderately cold weather, with a large basket usually
on their arm beneath it, and wiM push into every Wong,
price every article they can lay their hands on, and
never buy anything, are generally persons that need
watching.
Of the several cases or shoplifting brought to our
knowledge recently, two out of three were effected on
goods displayed on the street, - a
habit, by the way, too
keitorally pootJced by our merchants, as the disadysn
tages to stocks so displayed in the course of a year is
very considerable. ,The damage and loss arising from
tholaprisotice of exposing goods „to the injurious effects
'a the dist, the vreathet, and the temptation of street
thieves, might be univeriiallrkvSided, if bat all would
