Be would ask, what means this palsy. upon the pulse of trade? God's band was evidently upon it. Ile was in the count ing -house ned the atom, and ho had long been there.; but he had now come to ask of the nominal posaosser,_" Are thesegoods your's?" The reply Was,' Yes, they are mine—l have' paid for them." God pressing his inquiries, would ask, in laying his hand upon the bank-book, and all other evidences 'of value on paper, "Are these yours 7" And to tho assenting merchant, the Almighty Creditor was now thundering forth I his otnniflo, "No I—' the silver and the gold' are mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills:" Who kept your ships from foundering amid the storms at Bea? Who, but God, thy maker' and pro:weer ?" "Now then," continued the speaker, in view of this dialogue between man and his Maker, "is God's claim just ?" If so, he would ask the merchant, "Shall the Lerdhenceforth be a partner in your business or not?" Deep dOwn in the hearer's honest purpose ho saw the response coming up, "lie shall !" But now it was that the interest of Mammon was awakened, and with ingenious words of elo quence he came pleading with the merchant who was about to abandon him in words like these, Will you now forsake an eld friend? DA I not save your notes from protest last week by usury, when all other sources would have failed you 7 Oh, no, My friend, you mist give up your idea of any such exalted righteousness; the demands of your interests forbid it, and with tho popular argument that he carnet see why money is not just as much at article of merchandise as any thing else, Mammon 'winds' up his appeal. In reply to this usury doctrine of Mammon, the speaker again employed the "first and gnat commandment, and the second, which wm like unto it," with characteristic cogency out power of 'argument; at the same time ad ditg mans other scriptural passages to illus. trete the wickedness of taking usurious inter es: Ber money; to all of 010 ho admitted tint /fain:non might again reply "that many a nan, who was guilty of this sin was actually anornament to the church." This, of course, win a' fallacious sophistry when properly ex anined.. The requisite qualifications for a mm to outer the "holy place—the tabernacle of the Moat High," were utterly at variance wih all such covetous practices. " Alas !" co:Untied the speaker, cc that Christiane should plead necessity for being partaken: of sin!" low and that the temples of Mammon should mon be allowed to overtop the spires of the Clriatlan Church ! And now, in consequence of the, what did we behold upon the store doors in passing along the streets 7 Ichabod—the glory is departed; " beauty for ashes," beg gig for plenty. , the claims of God had been too universally oick:oked, The very language of the money arteles' in , some of our newspapers was the language of unbelieving infidelity; and that, toe by those whose boast it was "that the Leal !lath not dealt so with any other people." "Net this man, but Barabbas," was the Jewish cry now in too many instances being preen , calif reiterated. 'The Doctor hero introduced an illustration, shaving bow that the necessities of mon were takmadvantago of' in times like these, and re latela case in which the enormous shave of twobundred dollars had been incurred to raise fivehundred in order to save a note from protest; endive would ask whether there was a soul within his hearing that believed such extortion to in right? He knew there was not ono. And yet t if money were really mereltauclitte, the ownm of it could not be censured for taking the highest price for it he could command. The meaning of usury was two.: fold—the literal interpretation of the word was, biting. The Lenses in which the term was now accepted wore-Ist, The legal rate of' interest, which was, he thought, a noderate, and, hence, not unrighteous chop for its use ; and 2nd, The maldng of moray out of man's necessities. Ito hold that it WM alike wrong to either take or pay those usnrous rates of interest. Better, he said, fort man to be. bankrupt, and take refuge under the shadow of the Almighty, than to keopon defrauding creditors by paying usury to extortioners. Mancuon-worship must be given up; the i th 7D r e o v al, o r. f as b c o le t i l ' l ot G io o n d t ad Mammon o n o us sh was i calln tso ' Inconclusion, ho said that ho had given more prominence to this particular phase of covmousnevs from the fart that, if it was not entertained in general favor, it was at least' in verygoneral toleration. The closing, and ono of bh most impressive thrusts at Mammon worship, was a forcible allusion to our Savi our'soeurse on entering the temple and over throwing the tables of the money-changers for hiving made the house of prayer a den of thievis. Tin sermon, of which we are free to ac lloofedge this to be but a very imperfect and dlscomected sketch, was one of unusual power, though we can probably pay to it no' higher tribute than to say that it was eminent ly ehtracteristic of its Well-known author. • .. ,, ..sit.tot'...zetucArawl,t,:q. TIIE CUSTOUS FRAUDS AT BELFAST,—An drew liarbison, a clerk late in the employment of Moore, the porter, Robb, and a portion named Henley, have been arrested. Moore, whose frauds on the Customs amount to between £5,000 and £4,000, is now known to have lot Ireland, but it it thought that he has not succeeded in getting off to America. 'lris defalcation's to creditors are variously' stated at from £5,000 to £lO,OOO. The porter, Robb, Is quite unreserved in his statement as to Mr. Moore's proceedings. Me appears to have followed the example of ethers in abetter position, and to have contented himself by Simply remonstrating," to which Moore invariably replied that he was "hard up," and would make it " all right" en the first opportunity. 110 thinks that Moore did not profit so extensively as is helloing by his fraudulent transactions, and that ho left Belfast with com paratively little means.
