LETTER FROM NEW YORK.
(Correspondence or The Press.]
NEW YOBIC, Oct. 7,1857, 5.20 P. M
The money market was more stringent today, and
men hitherto confident and hopeful, were rather gloomy
and disporling. , The beet I can say is, that things are
net worse, but they eve not better. Many failures are
spoken of, but I forbear to giro the names until I learn
positively that the reports are true. A rather sanguine
looker•onwould say the market was dull and heavy ;"
.uo less hopeful vould say, !hero was a "depressed
Ming."
em of the former opinion, but in candor I must say
that I observed discouragement to-day where I have
never sees it,' and long faces and doleful exclamations
were more frequent than I have seen lately Confi
dence, confidence, eofifidenee, , Is what we want! The
money is here—more than enough to put us all to rights
—but pet It is irdpostible. Everybody distrusts his neigh
bor, though nobody will own it, and men 'fall who drag
'down a number of ethers, because those who could and
ought in thefr own interest to heifthem, fail to do so
ham the most 'childish and near-Bighted fear.
'lt IS lamentable to see such a state of things when it
Is remembered that in all that constitutes a country's
'wealth, we aro abundantly rich; that we could pay all
we Owe and be itflinent, If we only had the means to
make our wealth available; and yet our best men are
toted' to auceumb, because those who can will not aid
in the rescue of 'all:
• There is nothing doing at the note-brokers', except at
prices beyond all conception as businese transactions,
and the blinks are wholly unable to relieve the immure
in any groat degree. 'The accounts from Beaton are en—
couraging. The banks there acted well and bravely,
and though The atreet.rates are exorbitant, money Is to
be bad at asacrillcrt.' The bank commissioners Of Con
necticut ore promptly enjoining all susnded banks,
and the llartford banks have isoued the following card;
which - has had a re-assuring effect:
To rim Puncio.=The announcement that three banks
in Hertford have this day suspended specie payments,
