Report of ihr Co/,»ttt:tre appointed to Sitpmnt-uJ Iv
Burnt,t* *J e/ie Don Safes at Readim*. F Lru.ny
Zith l&i* RriDixo. March 4xh.
The wytetsigned, members of the committee, do re
spectfully report, that we «aw the two MlVs originally
agreed upou by Furreb* Sc Herring and Evans Sc W.u-o'i.
placed side by side iu a furnace, viz : the Safe in use I li
the Paymaster of the Philadelphia and Reading R iil
road Company, in his office at Reading, manufaetimd
by Parrels Sc Herrin;, and the Safe in u*e brH.A.
Lantz, in his store, manufactured by Evans A Wat'o i,
and put hi boohs and papers precisely alike
The lire was started at o'clock. A. M.. anJ kept
up until four cords of green hickory wood, two cord- of
dry oak and half chestnut-top wood were entT«d\ con
sumed, the whole under the superintendence of the
subscribers, members of the committee. The Safes
were then cooled off with water, after which they were
opened, and thv. books and paper* taken out by the
committee and sent to 11 A lamia's store, for puld.e
examination, after the;* w ere examined and markt-d
oy the committee. The books and papers taken from
the Sale manufactured hv Evans A Wat*nu were but
slightly affected by the intense heat, while t)u-e taken
from the Safe manufactured by Parrels A Herrin; were,
m our judgment, damaged fully fifteen percent uu.:e
than those taken Irotn Evan* \ Wat*ou** Safe.
\W believe the above to Ua\o be* n a fair and impar
tial trial of the respective qualities of both Safe*
