TO THE PUBLIC.
THAT Shakfpcare has followed nature
with such trath and corre&nefs, as to ren
der his Works the delight of all nations,
however differing in cuftoras and manners
from his own, is a fact which mote than
centuries of nnivj;rfal approbation have'
fufficiently eftablifherl—The debt unpaid
by the careless and unenlightened co-tem
poraries of this Illustrious Man has been
left to posterity to d ifcharge, and in pro
portion to theprogrefs of taste and litera
ture, the gratitnde bf mankind has endea
♦oured to acknowledge tke obligation.
England has exhibited her favourite Au
thors with splendor, and it is hoped that
America that feat of true libajty, will not
be backward in encouraging this firft great
attempt to do merited justice 10 the author
of this Dramatic Work.
The seleCtion therefore, of this incom
parable Production for an H.EOANT AMERI
CAN edition, requiting no juftification, it
only remains (6r ihe Pfiblifhers to add a few
observations on the claim which fiich under
takings have to patronage in America—a
country, which for liberry none can equal
and Ihould necefTarily be the nurse and pa
tron of the Arts. And tho' to rival the
Eastern country, may ffeerh hopeless in us—
yet it is surely a laudable endeavOtir to ex
cite that encouragement here,which Ihould
be always offered to improvement *nd ex
cellence. Indeed t»he zeal which has ap
peared in America, firicethe permanent et
tablilhment of the present happy constitu
tion, tor patronizing the arts, wbilft it ha
produced and rewarded a multitude of
works which immortalize the artist*, has
also exalted the character of the nation, and
given dignity to the people whose patriot
ism and munificence have promoted their
discovery of perfection.
America is not insensible to the value of
character, and will afiume her rank amorgft
nations as an encourager .of the arts. It
would therefore be an impeachment of her
wndei(landing and patriotism, if a doubt
were entertained of her possessing a portion
of that spirit which so elevates the eastern
world,a spirit which coniidered in a nation
al point of view, is one of the molt praise
wortfty in the catalogue of public virtues :
as it contributes to the belt interests of so
ciety, by promoting industry, cherishing
genius, multiplying the rational enjoyments
of life, and exciting a general talte for the
beautiful and the excellent.
mfewt!3J
In the hope then that the humble effort
here proposed may interest this fpirh, and
have some claim to generi I encourage
ment, it has been ttnetartakea.
The attention which shall be paid to the
corredtnefs and beauty of the P*intlks,
will evince the desire of the publiftiers to
present tfielr country wiih an cditien worthy
of the inimitable Shaktjpeait.
The Publifliers assure the Patron»of this
undertaking, tliry will difchjrge tl*ir en
gagement with ft'rift probity and honor,
and therefore hope ttiey may jtiKHy claim
public confidence and support.
