Merchants.
The committee having been notified by
the Secretary of State, that the Agetlt of
claims and appeals appointed by the Presi
dent of the United States is to embark
immediately for London, and that he is au
thorized to bindthe United States under the
diredtion of Mr. Jay, for the costs and da
mages, attending the prosecution of the
clairrt"! of American citizens; that the neces
sary courifel will be engaged on the part of
the United States, and, that if the panics
will obtain copies of the proceedings of the
: Courts on their refpetflive cases, the ex
| penfes of the records will be reimburfcd by
the United Staici,
They are of opinioti that meafufes
ought to be immediately taken for obtain
ing authenticated copies of such records and
proceedings in all caseS' where they have
not already been preserved, and will under
take to obtain them for all such of their
fellow-citizens as shall within 20 days from
"this date furnifli the names of the vefl'els
and matters ; the ports' <?'• places where
tried or wmdemned, with such other imor
snation as the cirCitriifcances of she cafe
may require.
They recommend to those who have al
ready obtained the copies of the proceed
ings of. the Courts to have tl*m examined
by some pcrfon of legal knowledge ; that if
they ihduidbc found defective in any ref
pc<sl the deficiency may be supplied, at the
lame time that the records are applied for.
